Wife just paid for a new PC. It's ordered, so I'm not looking for advice on parts. Just thought it was cool, and hopefully it'll serve me well.

MSI MAG B650M Mortar WIFI (Socket AM5) DDR5 Micro-ATX Motherboard
AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D Eight Core 5.00GHz (Socket AM5) Processor - Retail
Kingston FURY Beast EXPO RGB 32GB (2x16GB) C36 6000MHz Dual Channel Kit
Seagate FireCuda 530 1TB SSD PCIe Gen4 NVMe M.2 Solid State Drive with EKWB Heatsink
be quiet! Pure Power 12 M 850W ATX 3.0 80 Plus Gold Power Supply
be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4 CPU Cooler
Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut High Performance Thermal Paste
be quiet! Shadow Wings 2 120mm Fan x 3
Asus Prime AP201 TG MicroATX Case

I bought a 4070ti a couple months back, so it'll go into it as well.

I'll DL the appropriate MSI mobo BIOS for SoC correct voltages if I need to.

It's my first complete build since the Ryzen 1700X came out. Getting older makes this seem less like fun and more like a test.
Of note - power draw was a consideration for me. I'm on the PC all day (writing during day, gaming at night), so the 7800X3D was appealing over the equally priced i713700K.

It looks like a very nice rig to me. That be quiet! PSU caught my eye. Looks like a really good unit and I like my PSUs to have a 10 year warranty also. I've never owned a be quiet product but I'm going to have to check out their PSU line next year when I finally do my new build.

I'm not an Asus groupie but this case has fantastic reviews and it's not stupid expensive.

Thats pretty nice of your wife to do that and that looks like a solid build/have fun with it!:)
I've never owned a small-ish form factor PC but that case I kinda like and its actually affordable from what I see. 'I always play around with the idea of switching to a smaller case/system but then I'm not sure if I'm capable enough building a good looking/cable managed one with much less space:oops:'

Make sure to update the BIOS before doing stuff. If the ram doesn't run at 6000 using XMP/EXPO, the solution is to raise the SoC and VDDIO-MEM voltage. Hopefully it works on auto for you.

I did say in the OP:

I'll DL the appropriate MSI mobo BIOS for SoC correct voltages if I need to.

Hopefully, I'll not need to touch the SoC voltage.

I noticed the VDDIO-MEM has been a lot lower since the meltdown BIOS update. Vendors are playing it Super safe, but 1.0- 1.1V (default) may not be enough now. Sure isn't if you are using 4 DIMMs or dual rank. It use to be 1.25-1.35 by default.

What does the extensive memory start up testing achieve (if not to stabilise settings)? I'm aware it takes a while to boot.

AP201 is great case, just bear in mind the psu/cpu size compatibility is either/or, you can't max out both. I tried a 10mm shorter psu with a 4080 and although both were well within specs of "support" they didn't fit together.

No mention of this of course in the documentation.

Max PSU is 180, the beQuiet is 160. I'll be pissed if the 320mm GPU and that isn't compatible. As you say, it's not mentioned in the literature.

Edit: I'll break things to make it work.

I think I used a dark power 12, which was 175mm and a 330mm GPU, that didn't fit at all.

Pc parts looks good to. christmas in summer. Remember the feeling when building my current pc two years ago after having the same X58 system for twelve dam years.

I've already checked the case - The GPU is < 320mm, it doesn't reach the PSU enclosure area. It'll be good.

Seriously, I've been away from this for too long. I've not built a complete new system for 6 years. That's a lot of rust. The system is assembled now (and sitting in case), but I'm holding off the start-up until later in the week. Need to find an HDMI for the CPU iGPU to connect to monitor. Using DP with my 4070ti in my current PC. I figure I can link the HDMI and have both PC's connected (though not on), and cycle the display output via the monitor. That way I don't have to disassemble the PC I'm typing on at the moment (no iGPU - once I remove the 4070ti, there's not output).

I'm using the 12v ATX3.0 GPU cable, even though it's rigid as a dead man's fingers. I've bent the cable 30mm from the header to allow it to flex inside the case. With the height of the GPU though, I may not be able to put the side on. This is where the ATX3.0 design choice starts to show it's flaws, in that it is a limiting factor for fit in some conditions (worse than the old connectors, at least).

You should look up the combo I did in 2021.
Zalman Z1 Neo
AsRock B550 Steel Legend
Thermalright ARO-M14G
Seasonic Focus (GX) 650

That case was cramped. I had to use a pair of long needle nose pliers to plug the EPS 12V connector in.

It cleared due to the joggled window flange.

System running correctly at BIOS stage - no errors to see. Updated to latest BIOS (30th May) E7D76AMS.A50. So that should keep the CPU safe from mobo vendor over-volting.

Need to figure what to do with regard to OS. Go with Win 10 or 11? Either way, it's another £100.
