System running correctly at BIOS stage - no errors to see. Updated to latest BIOS (30th May) E7D76AMS.A50. So that should keep the CPU safe from mobo vendor over-volting.

Need to figure what to do with regard to OS. Go with Win 10 or 11? Either way, it's another £100.

I much prefer Win 10 but it's probably best to go with Win 11. I wouldn't be surprised to see Win 12 getting released before Extended Support for Win 10 ends but it's possible that Win 12 might have some problems and we will need to stick with Win 11 for a lttle while after Win 12 gets released.

Win 11 uses webview for a lot of apps, including the start menu, so that's objectively worse.

Promised improvements such as direct storage etc, all coming to 10.

Only real thing going for 11 IMO is the improved multi monitor window management and the updated task manager.

Here on TPU there's some "official" ads for keys seller, it's a cheaper alternative ?

By the way, did you experience long boot times or everything starts as fast as light ?

Wow, congrats! :toast:

Let us know how it goes with the 7800X3D. I'm currently struggling with mine. At stock with EXPO, it runs into thermal limit in Cinebench straight away, and tops out at 80-ish Watts, around 4.5 GHz and 17000 points. I've ordered the Thermal Grizzly offset mount, which hopefully fits my be quiet! Silent Loop 2 and helps with the issue. Your Dark Rock 4 Pro should theoretically have similar cooling capacity (based on reviews), so I hope you'll succeed - let me know if you do, and what tricks you had to employ. :)

Edit: For the time being, I'm using the CPU with boost turned off. This way, I get 16000 points in Cinebench with 73-74 °C max. It's a bit disappointing that I have to do this with a 280 mm AIO, but oh well...

I don't think 'fast as light' boot times and Ryzen 7 can be said together. I bought into it with an understanding of the load times.

I'm not going to run benchmarks. I lost interest in performance metrics like that a long time ago. The cooler is as big as I could get, without going AIO, and I've no interest in custom loops either. Been there, done that. I wanted a CPU that could stretch it's legs way beyond what I'm currently on (3700X), and I wanted a CPU that ran at low power when gaming. I think it should be okay. I'll find out in the next week when I start to load OS etc, and switch over my GPU.

I'm not running Cinebench for numbers, either, only for thermals - that's why I'm disappointed so far. The scores look alright (I couldn't care less), but my temperatures are abysmal. :(

I'm getting the TG AM5 offset mounting kit tomorrow, I hope that (together with reapplying the cooler) will help. I love my cooler, I don't want to ditch it only because its mounting mechanism sucks.

@ir_cow - you were spot on about the EXPO. When installing Windows, it crashed (error mentioned ACPI, I think). Did it again. I reset memory to default 4800, and it installed fine. I'll get everything running and operational before I tinker with voltages for that. I've never fiddled with memory, so it's all gibberish to me.

Same here. All I know is that the SoC voltage shouldn't be too high or too low. With 6000 MHz memory, 1.2 V should be fine (theoretically).

All up and running. Default RAM speeds for now. Played PUBG (potato G), and set moniotor to 140Hz. Game ran steady at 140fps. With the old 3700X, it struggled to maintain 120, often dipping to low 100's. So, the 7800X3D is working well. CPU didn't rise above low-mid 60's, and the system was silent. GPU seemed happier with the 7800X3D as well. Weirdest thing is when I put my hand over the exhausts (rear and top), the air was still cool - no heat that I noticed. Also tried resolution scaling via control panel (1.78) and it still ran at 140fps. Nice chip the 7800X3D.

Almost worth reversing airflow, rear/top intake, CPU fans flipped, front exhaust, so the GPU hot air doesn't go straight into the CPU cool air intake.

For some reason, that seems to be the case with my Ryzen builds so far. The i7-11700 that I had before warmed up the exhaust air considerably more when running with the same core temperatures.

Nice build anyway, congrats! :)

Airflow is fine to me. Fans not stressed, temps low. No different from a water loop where the CPU heated water flows through the GPU block (or vice-versa).

The perforated case makes a huge difference from previous build plus the Dark Rock Pro is overkill. As a point of interest, previous Lian Li case had two intakes blowing into the CPU (3700X) - cooled by a Thermalright Le Grande Macho, which ran hotter than the current set up.

Oh yes! I've just installed a Shadow Rock LP because there's something wrong with my AIO (or maybe it's just not suited for Ryzen), and CPU package temps don't even reach 70 in games. With that said, I've just ordered a Dark Rock 4 to make sure I can maintain maximum boost under all circumstances. I wanted to wait until after my holiday, but I couldn't help myself.

One thing is for sure, I won't touch an AIO again.

The new 8 cores since X3D started draw very little power in most games, and 4070 Ti is super efficient at low loads, so lack of heat output makes sense.

The must be the Biggest CPU cooler I have ever seen lol

It's not that big, but the single top cover bridging the two fin stacks makes it look really big. It is a pretty unwieldy cooler though, which is why I got rid of mine

I bought a 4070ti a couple months back, so it'll go into it as well.

I'll DL the appropriate MSI mobo BIOS for SoC correct voltages if I need to.

It's my first complete build since the Ryzen 1700X came out. Getting older makes this seem less like fun and more like a test.
Of note - power draw was a consideration for me. I'm on the PC all day (writing during day, gaming at night), so the 7800X3D was appealing over the equally priced i713700K.
MAG is the entry-level (budget) solution for gamers. You could choose MEG for better performance.

Anyway, have fun!

If I wanted better performance, I'd have bought an RTX 4090, and an ATX board, and a bigger case, and a bigger PSU.

But I bought what I wanted, for the purpose I use it, within a budget I had (or wished to spend).

Actually a good recommendation. Ideal in pretty much all NCASE M1 layout cases that can accommodate a top exhaust fan. Rear intake works best for a large tower like DRP4.

The PSU is front mounted (blocks exhaust), and there's no fan position for the front. I appreciate the advice, but it's running cooler than my previous build and that had an open side. If things change, I'll look at the fan positions, but at present, with the base clearance (set on wooden shelf) and the case deisgn, the air flow is pretty good.

I think you'll be just fine with the 7800X3D and 4070 Ti. If you had say a 13700K and a 4080/XTX, then the rear intake becomes less nice-to-have and more necessity. The front fan is unnecessary, just bottom and rear intake and top/side exhaust. M1 and NR200 don't have a front fan either.

MAG is the entry-level (budget) solution for gamers. You could choose MEG for better performance.

Anyway, have fun!
What performance? The 7800X3D is a locked CPU that consumes maybe 90 W max. You don't need the ultimate motherboard to run it. :)

Motherboards don't offer performance differences unless you're comparing two vs four DIMM slot variants for ram OC (Intel only) or settle for auto values instead of tuning things yourself, where some boards can have better algorithms.

As a rule all AM5 boards have good enough VRMs for that not to matter, and Zen doesn't OC well anyway, in either cpu or RAM.

Unless you look at some A620 boards. I can't believe how weak some of the $99 AM5 boards are.

Point proved: you don't need a very high end motherboard for AM5. :) Except for maybe the 7950X, I don't know.
