Some interesting tidbits trickled their way back from CES 2008: Sony may be planning a new PlayStation3. This particular version of the PlayStation3 would be lighter, thinner, and prettier. This move comes as no surprise, when looking at Sony's past. The original PlayStation ended up as a very tiny PSOne. The PlayStation2 was once as large as the original PlayStation, and now is even smaller than the PSOne. The PSP underwent a similar transformation over the summer.

If this rumor is true, chances are we'll find the 160GB hard drive inside the slimmer PlayStation3.

Isn't an improved 360 supposed to come out in August as well? This is interesting for me considering I was thinking of buying one or both very soon...within a week or so.

Lol,how much did they charge for the "old" one, prepare to be pwnd by sony ps3 lovers, coz you know your gonna want the new one.

After all the bits they have removed from the PS3 since the launch model it isn't surprising that hey can shrink the consoles chassis, lets all hope they reduce the retail price also.

When this happened to the 360 everybody was getting angry about it for some reason... Isn't change over time good?

Rumor is that its gonna be at least 120gb and it will come with the new dualshock3.

That would be extremely awesome. I am really curious if there are any concept designs floating around out there.....

Why does a console need a 120gb drive? for game saves? or storing your drm enabled films and music?

Hi,
What significant could they change to make it worth the extra wait to buy one?

Well, I have the 60GB version and I'm already looking to upgrade. Between all the free demos I've download(which I can obviously delete once I get around to playing them) and all my MP3's and Divx movies I only have about 5GB left.

You can put non-DRM media on the PS3 and it will play just fine, ya know.

Backward compatibility similar to the 60GB models again? Larger HD, better design, I dunno. The new controllers as someone else mentioned.

I think it's going to be a Ceramic 120gb thin PS3.

i think im glad i haven't bought a ps3 yet cause i would be kinda mad getting that big thing and in a few months seeing a nice sleeker slimmer one

The current PS3 actually fits in very nicely with my desk and setup. My HDTV is a Sharp Aquos with a shiny piano black finish, just like the PS3 so they go well together.

meh its not so much about the size its the technology they would be using etc just like my 360 i had a pro...sold it and got an elite it goes well with my philips 47inch plasma tv with a piano black finish ;) i'll eventually get a ps3 maybe in august now

I have no reason to be pissed about a PS3 with the same technology, just slimmer (and probably with a 45nm processor). As far as one coming out with a bigger HD, I could just buy a 2.5" sata HD and put it right in my PS3.

im a fan of new not old..technically you'd have the

"fat ps3" as they called the first gen ps2 "fat"

so i guess its just a personal preference but i'd rather have the cooler chip in my system (less heat means longer life) and the extra crap if its cheaper or the same price rather than buying a new sata HD to put in an older ps3.

just me though

EDIT: thats what i did with my 360 i took 3 back until i got the Falcon board with the Newer chip in it.

I could see wanting a 45nm chip in a console that has a horrible failure rate. ;)

I'm not 100% sure, but I think the 40gb Console without any PS2 playback, which is the only one they sell here in Australia, has a 45nm CPU. I'm pretty sure it was a smaller one then the 60gb console anyway.

So basically, as long as I don't care about size, it's reliable at it is (I will get 4 years extra warranty too) and I don't mind maybe costing more and smaller hard disk (which just adds to costing more), there is no point me waiting?

Shrinking the chip in the PS3 isn't going to increase sales. Heat, stability and hardware failure aren't issues with the PS3. What they need to do is get programmers who aren't lazy and make games worthy of being on PS3, not crappy ports that have framerate issues. Devil May Cry 4 seems like the first real good example of a game made right. Also the Falcon's most likely will still have a high failure rate, maybe not as much as the Zeph's but its the GPU that needs a die shrink, and that won't come until August when the "Jasper" models come out, equipped with a 65nm CPU & GPU. I really do want a 360, but the hardware failing does scare me away from it. I might just tough it out with PS3 until August and then finally get a 360 like I want.

mine has been going strong and it wasn't just the gpu it was the way they had the coolers and if you look into it you'll see that they have new coolers on the cpu and gpu and they use better lead free solder so that they dont crack under heat. also with a 3 year warranty from microsoft you really have no reason to be "scared" my little brothers 360 just went (he had it since launch) and he put about 4-5 days worth of gaming on it a week and it lasted up until a few days ago...we called M$ and they are sending a box over they simply said give it to us wait a week and you'll have either your console fixed and if not a fixed one you'll get a "brand new one" not a refurbished if its unfixable

My thoughts exactly

If they shrink it, but keep all the nice hookups and card reader types, add ps2 emulation back and make it cheaper with a bigger HDD, yessir, that will be the shiz net
