Hi,
I just got a 5900x and a Dark Hero Board and i'd like to get the best out of it without having stuff going too warm.

I was interested in the PBO curve and watching some tutorials on it like this one :

However i'm kinda lost about other settings :

Should i leave vcore on auto?
What about core ration.. LLC?
What bout the Dark Hero Oc switch?

I don't really get what goes together or not.. I'd really appreciate some help from experienced user on this platform..

Thanks a lot !

Personally I just let the PBO auto-OC do its job, I don't manually OC my 3600.

I was afraid of temperatures with things going manual.

Right now i have set the cores at 4.6 @ 1.2, can i activate PBO with that and use the OC switch of the dark hero?

I don't know about that board, but on my Gigabyte B550M Aorus Elite I just enabled PBO and left every voltage setting on auto except RAM as I've overclocked these.

And don't worry if it looks like PBO with auto-voltages looks like that it's using high voltage, it does it only with light loads just as it's supposed to do.

PBO doesn't hammer Vermeer like it did with Matisse, thankfully.

Hi,
Question about my 5900x on a Dark Hero Board

Here are my settings for my 5900x / Dark Hero

voltage : auto
core : auto
Per ccx 47 /46 @1.27
Dynamic oc switcher 90amp
PBO limits :
PPT 165W
TDC 120A
EDC 150A
Core boost override : +100mz
Pbo curve : -15 on 4 best / -30
120% cpu capability
120% dram capability
CPU phase : extrême
LLC3

Scores on cb23 are around 23500 multi core and 1620 single is this good?

i've tried LLC auto but even at 1.3, CBR23 was crashing after a moment and i haven't tried higher

I have those values on desktop i was told 1.5 was normal when using PBO but i'd rather be sure of it
FB_IMG_1625169472738.jpg

So should i :

Put more voltage in per ccx?
leave it as it is with llc 3, it's all stable with decent scores

Thanks

PBO temps will usually be slightly higher as the algorithm will have some voltage margins at some point on the curve.
I have those values on desktop i was told 1.5 was normal when using PBO but i'd rather be sure of it
PBO boost voltages under low current situations are usually up to around 1.5v, these voltages are only safe at these temperatures with low current loads. If you fire up prime95 the voltages will be adjusted by the boost algorithm accordingly.

The 5900x boosts pretty nicely out of the box, just raise the power limits and maybe do some curve optimiser tuning, but that will basically be better than anything you can manage manually.

Once you raised the power limits, memory will probably give you bigger gains in a most of the stuff you can do.

Do you really need llc with pbo and co enabled?

I got better results with less power not more.. Some of your settings I would use with a hard manual clock.. not pbo stuff like that.

VCore, LLC, Clocks = Auto except with a manual OC.

Curve Optimizer negative all core (start with -10)
do not use core clock offsets since they mess with the curve optimizer and lower the stable negative offset by a lot.

download "Core Cycler" and open the config file and change it to two minutes per core and let it run until all cores were tested.

if they are stable and show no errors. go back and increase the curve optimizer value by 2.
rinse and repeat.

and disable the Memory Power Down Mode in the RAM settings and turn the PSU Idle Control to typical under AMD CBS (below the overclocking menu in most bioses)

if you have it stable you can put the PBO Scalar to 2X (increases the boost behaviour by manipulating the integrated health management with a scalar from 1x (stock) up to 10x.)
but every step increases the load voltage by around 5-10mv and with it the clock speed. (for example in cinebench R23. 1X 1.33V 4650 Mhz, 2X 1.34V 4675-4700Mhz. boosts under lighter conditions like gaming are much bigger)
everything above 2x only let everything gets hotter and closer to 10x may be not safe over a couple years.

Why use psu idle control?

I'm using an alternative power plan which requires idle low setting and I'm getting 35c idle without loss of performance at load. But can it cause issues?

I put llc on auto with
Per ccx 47 /46 @1.31
Curve optimizer - 15 on 4 best /-30 the rest
+100 boost
I got good scores like 23400/1620 on cb23
Geek score bench around 15500/1730
Asus oc dynamic switch at 95amps

Gaming temps max around 60c

My only weird issue is when i put phase control yo extrême or 140 on cpu current capability I have a crash at boot or a moment after arriving on windows, q code 00 ryzen which os cpu not detected. With setting stock in digi +, no crash

So if less is better what would be a safe ans simpler but as efficient settings?

On stock settings the temps are not good for me, around 45 idle to 65 for every minor action, that's not something i am comfortable with that's why I've used an alternative power plan (ryzen sz v4)

Thanks again!

Why use psu idle control?
it prevents the CPU cores drop down to 0.2V at idle (which can cause a hard crash/reboot) it has no other influence on the system. idle states, core sleep and everything else at idle is still fully functional.

Oh maybe that causes my q code 00? When i set cpu current capability / phase control on auto the crash does not appear

Per ccx 47 /46 @1.31
this overrides any PBO setting

The high temperatures in soft idle are just a product of the boosting algo pushing up the clocks for small tasks. The CPUs are validated with this behaviour, it is intended, normal, and safe. As long as the CPU is not reaching the maximum operating temperature it is not something that should be a concern.

It doesn't matter whether you think 50c is hot for that idle state, the CPU does not care.

That doesn't override it since i have a dark hero Motherboard with dynamic oc switcher, it can switch from pbo to all core overclock :)

@Mussels has a highly valuable write-up here. It was very useful for tweaking my new 5800X.

As of now, my PBO settings are 105/70/95 and I have a "negative auto" vcore offset. This does decrease multi-core performance slightly, but the single-core performance is still great, so that's a sacrifice I'm willing to make.

Manual OCing on Zen 3 isn't recommended from what I know because PBO can achieve better results with better stability and theoretically better longevity.

Currently running a highly CPU-bound game and my temps are in the high 60s to low 70s. Ambient temp is 28C as of writing.

Would those settings be similar for a 5900x?

Also for pbo ice used the advanced option as well don't know if it's still relevant

On my TUF Gaming X570-PLUS WiFi, the PBO settings under "AI Tweaker" override the ones in advanced CPU settings. I'd think your board would be the same since it's also an ASUS board.

The 5900X does have a slightly better thermal design than the 5800X, so you'll probably get better temps than me. The settings I'm running would likely be fine, though if you want, you should use them as a base to build upon. I'm satisfied with the performance I get, but you might not be.

You can set a negative vcore offset when using pbo? In the main voltage setting?

It's what I've been doing since I got my 2600X. Seems to work fine.

I think you should go to a pro or someone that actually specializes in that. Doing something wrong might ruin you pc, and you wont be able to boot it up.
Even ryzen has its own oc app call "ryzen master". You could be talking to some that has no idea what they are talking about when oc.

Also, Are those voltage safe it was when gaming on biomutant, temps are ok and clocs are good but this 1.481 and average 1.38 and sometimes more worries me.
