I just bought this monitor a few weeks ago, but I don't have a DP port on my card, just HDMI and DVI. Have to have a DP port to run it @144hz. :banghead:

No, HDMI will run 144hz just fine on that display. You'll be fine.
That Monitor is on my Dell i5 PC with a AMD Power Color GDDR5 Windows 10, it only shows the highest hz of 60hz. This is from the HP site " For 144 Hz you have to use Display Port AND install windows driver update from HP site".

Depends a lot on the HDMI version. I think you'd need HDMI 1.3/1.4 at least for anything around above 1080p at 60hz+. Old 1.2 won't cut it.

HDMI honestly is just overclocked single link DVI, and pretty weak as a standard. The monitor is older and probably only implements HDMI 1.2.

Support varies a lot between screens, i've definitely seen some weird ones where the HDMI standard was lagging so you have to use DP for full res/refresh support.

Also I can't think of the last GPU I had that didn't have DP. Even my 7770 had it, I think in mini form.

I have the Power Color HD 7770 GDDR5 bought it at Micro Center many years ago, it doesn’t have a DP port, but it never mattered to me, and really still don’t. I’m good with that HP monitor and 7770 card since I’m not a gamer, it’s just Best Buy advertised it as a 144 Hz. I really like the monitor, so just plugging it into HDMI works for me. If/when I decide to purchase a new card, I’ll get one with a DP, but all it well with what I have.

This is the Power Color HD 7770 I have, no DP.

Personally I do not care of refresh rate specifications, my DELL IPS U2311H, after of 9,5 years this is has not decided yet to be recycled.
When I will upgrade to ASUS 1660 Super mini OC, and after loading the monitor inf file, I think that backwards compatibility will be restored.

This is from the HP site " For 144 Hz you have to use Display Port AND install windows driver update from HP site".
Do you have the exact model number? I'd like to look up specs and whatnot. I suspect that you need to set the refresh-rate manually as Windows generally defaults to 60hz. You should be able to at least get 100hz or 120hz as a manual selection.
This is the way it was advertised....
HP 25x - 24.5-inch LED Full HD 1920x1080 Gaming Monitor, 144 Hz Refresh Rate - Gray/Green
Then it should do it. As long as you GPU has at least HDMI 1.3 or better, 144hz at 1440p is doable.

Depends a lot on the HDMI version. I think you'd need HDMI 1.3/1.4 at least for anything around above 1080p at 60hz+. Old 1.2 won't cut it.
True!

Not so true. HDMI has a number of features that DVI did not.
The monitor is older and probably only implements HDMI 1.2.
That's what I want to look up with an exact model number. This discussion is all academic if the display itself isn't spec'd to do it.

Ignoring the academic side of things, a dual-link HDMI to DVI adaptor would work for the OP, same as DP to dual link DVI (probably need to be a powered, active adaptor for that one)

This number was taken right off the back of my monitor.

That might be your limitation. That card is from 2012. Have you tried setting the refresh rate in the display settings to something higher than 60hz?
Tried it in the OS settings "no go" and looked for it in the Radeon Software settings, but could not find it in the Radeon settings, maybe I missed something.

Nope, it would have been a selectable option. Are you open for a newer GPU? There are plenty of newer cards that can do better than the one you have now..

Yes! that was my next move, just to get another GPU with a DP. My issues is, I don't game, so I don't need a 200-300 dollar card, just something close to the one I have with a DP.

This is what I get when I try and set it to 120 Hz it only goes up to the 120 Hz. It's 59 or nothing, as for as the highest refresh rate...

Capture.JPG

EDIT:

Ok, there is a God, somehow I messed around with the display setting and go it to accept the 120 Hz, it never showed an option for 144 Hz, but I'm good, not going to get greedy.

That said, here are a few examples of what would likely be able to give you that 144hz;
