No New Radeon Drivers For Two Months?

Hi

Current Radeon drivers are almost coming up to two months old (2024-10-18). I've not seen a gap like this before.

I did a search but no information came up as to why they haven't released anything new. Does anyone have any info?

I think this is a really bad sign. AMD software teams work less, and the release schedule is hurt badly. Previously, we had seen three or four releases PER MONTH !, now it is 2 months with zero releases.
Maybe means that the graphics division of the company has no money for salaries, and its budget is close to zero now?

The thing is that the next driver will be released in March 2025. Let's call them quarterly drivers

It's nothing of the sort, they had many technical issues pending, RDNA 4 comes out very soon, and there have been some layoffs, stands to reason that some rescheduling and planning was necessary. You should expect a normal release for what will be logically named "25.1.1", unless something else happens during the holidays.

The thing is that the next driver will be released in March 2025.

I don't think this will happen unless a repeat of the fiasco during RDNA 3's launch comes to pass. When the 7900 XTX launched, the current driver releases supported only it and the 7900 XT, the other supported cards (which at the time ranged from RX 480 to 6950 XT) were left out in the cold for ~2 months while they worked relentlessly to stabilize Navi 31 and its horrorshow of launch bugs. This time they might just have planned ahead of time to avoid this from repeating, especially during the January AAA launch season like last time.

I know. These technical issues are there for years already, without being fixed.

It's not the same, and some development time will need to be put towards it. This is normal, though. I don't think there will be major issues going forward

I'm completely fine with this. I honestly can't even tell difference between drivers, all my games still run same fps. I am a casual gamer though so eh

People still pretending driver releases bring lifechanging improvements with every release and are needed till the end of time. At most the compiler gets improvements in the first months or so to emit correct and efficient code, this is when most bugs are ironed out. Most games run on the same engines and those game engines are updated rather slowly meaning optimizations remain valid for a very long time.

Can you please list all of those bugs that you are accusing AMD of?

Considering AMD is having a good time at the moment with the 9800X3D selling many systems and chips, do you think they are broke or something? By the looks of it RDNA4 is a stop-gap to the new architecture. Be patient, they're cooking.

Of course they aren't broke, they're making more money than ever and RDNA4 is shaping up to be a good product, the ~700$ and under market is where the bulk of the sales happen anyway. Their problem is the same as ever, Nvidia's immutable mindshare.

"They need a halo product" is just another product of the S-tier mindshare hold Nvidia has on people. They obviously don't need one, their CPU division is proof of that, they were gaining market share long before they had their X3D "halo products".

Unless its Intel and Nvidia its FUD from that one.

The horrors I have experienced with my hardware was when I pushed it too far it reset the driver.

"Didn't happen to me, so issues don't exist" is what you sound like, and I know you mean better than that. Some people didn't get hit by 5700 XT black screen bugs, either. Doesn't mean they didn't go through several hardware steppings and a year of driver updates to stabilize the situation.

Regular driver updates are a must, because in many games the Radeon performance is not the highest possible, and needs tuning and improvement.

The driver released today also has bugs, and if they stop the driver development, they will never get fixed. Remember that these issues are reported already for n-time releases.

I don't know. I recommend avoiding their cards..

No new drivers is not a bad thing. No news is good news. Besides, drivers are not something that need updates without reason.

Surprised how many replies down I had to go to see this.

If stuff from six weeks ago is old, my year old drivers must be ancient. I stayed on them originally because the handful of drivers after them had odd performance behavior in specific scenarios, and I just stopped trying new ones after a while. I figured I'll update once I run into an actual issue, but I haven't yet.

I did the same thing with my previous nVidia graphics card and stayed on then-older drivers for a few years at one point, and I probably avoided a lot of issues with games that nVidia drivers were causing. Resident Evil 2 2019 comes to mind as one I played later and had a lot of issues with nVidia's recent drivers of the time, but my dusty old 373.06 ones had zero, so who's laughing now!?

The issue with you is all of your opinion is based on purely conjecture. You poor p$#% all over Radeon without using a 7000 series GPU. For some of us it is the fastest GPU we have owned and your continued negative lean is not even remmebered when I am enjoying the hell out of 4K Gaming that my GPU is not supposed to be capable of. The issues listed are not anything that I have experienced. I truly do not understand how TPU does not ban some of your posts when they go against everything that Radeon reviews on TPU say. Some of the issues are not even on the radar of most TPU users.

It's to support newer games and add new instructions and extensions, which in turn generate some bugs. GPUs are complex hardware and new features are always being added. Bug fixes aren't the exclusive and sole purpose of driver updates, if anything, it's but a necessity. Staying on an old release means you are forgoing the ability to use these newer extensions and features, and if you're doing that to retain stability... well, it's very hard to argue that is a positive thing. You may do okay due to the things you currently run on it not needing the very latest feature support, but it's gonna catch up sometime.

Today's NV driver release is a very minor release adding game-ready support for upcoming releases like Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. The games that AMD added tailored support for with today's release have been supported by Nvidia for a few weeks now. Stalker 2 support, for example, was added in the November 12 driver release, 8 days before the game released.
