Been using Comodo Free Internet Security Suite for over 10 years now. Never faced any issue.
However, in between, I didn't use any antivirus except defender for almost 2 years, and never got any virus or other kinda malwares. Its all up to you which kinda websites you visit.
And for flash drive origin viruses, I always select flash drive from left navigation bar in explorer and never double click on it. NEVER!

But as you hinted, being careful where you surf and using a proper browser goes a long way towards mitigating many problems. On the other hand, the mother of all AV programs won't save a user that downloads a "system optimizer" and grants it admin rights on launch...

This news makes me even more glad i dumped Avast 3 years ago for Bitdefender Internet Security and Windows Defender (depending on which of my systems).

And that is where the Comodo HIPS program management come in. It prevents binaries from running unless you grant permission.

A good 3rd party firewall is better than any a/v. I used Norton in windows 95 and it was pretty good, now, I dont touch it. Malwarebytes I like for a weekly scan.

Avast was caught selling personal information, if ya think Norton will cease continuing that practice, I got a bridge for sale.
