NVIDIA announced its next-generation GeForce GTX 1080 graphics card. Based on the "Pascal" architecture, this chip is built on the 16 nm FinFET process. It uses GDDR5X memory at 10 GHz (GDDR5-effective) clock speed. NVIDIA announced major improvements to the VRM that drives graphics cards, that increases switching efficiency. NVIDIA announced that the GeForce GTX 1080 is faster than a GeForce GTX 980 SLI, and a GeForce GTX TITAN X. The air-cooled GTX 1080 runs at a very high clock speed or 2.11 GHz, with 10 GHz memory clocks, at a temperature of 67 degrees C. Available on May 27, it's priced at $599.

More pictures after the break.

2114MHz clock air cooled running the demo. Not too shabby at all.

This thing will idle through 1080p. LoL
They said better performance than 980 sli.
Dang.

AMD won't even compete with the new cards. Polaris 10 is gonna fight for the lower scraps with less margins. Reality hurts with the monopoly.

Let's not speculate just yet. I have a feeling that AMD might have some aces on its sleeves. But I'm just speculating too.... :)

One question I have thou, is the 2.1Ghz freq, the default turbo-boost one for all nVidia cards, or it was the maximum achieved through o.c. by EVGA (special eddition?) ?

Beautiful card.

They surely do, they've been promoting and bragging about their ACEs (Asynchronous Compute Engines) for months now :D

He said the 'overclocking potential was huge'... could be referencing that they had overclocked it, but it would still be able to go farther. That could be their new turbo boost

1070 is interesting.

Toss in HDR with HW encode/decoder

He mention that the Founders Editions were the ones with O/C headroom. Maybe the regular ones will be locked in some way to give them added value.

Overclocked. The screencap I posted shows 2.1/11000MHz effective memory. Stock clocks as per the link I posted in my earlier post states 1607MHz base, 1733MHz (min) guaranteed boost, 10000MHz effective memory. Just like Maxwell the official specs and reference clocks are conservative - so two bites of the cherry with reviewers - low power and prodigious OC headroom....and a third bite of the cherry when reviewers bench the AIB custom cards with more aggressive clocks.

By the sounds of it, the Founders Editions are reference cards with higher clocks. Nvidia sells direct to the consumer these days, so it makes sense to compete in the factory OC market as well.

Dang.

Is it 2x raw performance or 2x performance per watt? Cant wait for benchmarks from reviewers

When does the NDA get lifted?

Probably just around Computex when these new gpus are rumored to be made available to public.

No, I really don't think so.
COMPUTEX starts on 31st May..........the GTX 1080 officially launches 27th May with launch day availability.

If you look closely in the "Performance" section of the nvidia page you will see some hints about the real performance:

http://www.geforce.com/hardware/10series/geforce-gtx-1080

It seems that when they refer to +2x performance of 980 the are talking about VR with all the new gameworks features, not the standard gaming.

My Fury X just comitted suicide.

Good job nVidia for such great improvement! This praise comes from a decade long ATi fan.

Single 8-pin PCIe power connector... ;)

1080Ti card will be a freaking beast!

You can bet that they will milk these cards for a long while. Even more so if amd doesn't compete with the 1080, any time soon.

Well, get used to, AMD hasn't any plan to compete against this vcard in the short run, they are aiming at 1070 with similar price points, that is what AMD has told us so far.

I was watching the live stream. Jen-Hsun specifically said 2x performance of TITAN X, 3x efficiency in VR. Earlier in the show he stated faster than 980 in SLI, and much faster than a Titan X.

They bragged about tech they invented and got added in to dx12 last minute. Lets make PhysX part of Dx12 spec then nvidia can brag their cards are better at it for month's. that is pretty much how it is

How about waiting for actual reviews.

hopefully this would push down the price of the gtx 980

My initial thoughts were a repeat power restriction like that of the 980 reference had at 180w. The FEs could be better bin or just have the power limit lifted up to 225w maybe combination. Thus allow them to clock/boost higher

AMD Promotion FAIL since beginning 2016 and the ridiculous "Capsaicin PR stunts Event" with 2X perf./watt & 'Asynchronous Compute' PR blabla... Polaris 10/11 is the 'Next Big AMD Thing' in 2016 for AMD Gamers - no AMD highend GPU till Q1/Q2 2017 (vega)!

it's PR FUD with only Radeon R9 390 Performance to fix AMD awful high power consumption 280W typical outdated gaming board => now with 100W less power - but the same bad AMD performance & drivers errors.
