I don't quite understand your comment about the 7600gt here.

It was a cracking card. It matched the performance of the previous high end card of the time (the 6800Ultra) despite having fewer pixel pipelines and only a 128bit memory interface.

Yes it could have been better with a 256bit memory interface however at the time there was no need for it (due to a complete lack of competition from ATI).

^ backing him up here, 76GT owned 1650pro's, which was the price equivalent around here.

I'm really looking forward to SLI results on these...

i bet the first geforce 9000 series/radeon 3000 series midrange cards launch with 128 bit again, the midrange 'refresh' cards usually go to 256 (x800gt/o, x1950pro etc), then the first of the next generation always take a step backwards

Its like they have short term memory loss or something

The x800GT/O and x1950Pro aren't mid-range cards.

Exactly, 128-bit doesn't mean it is bad, one of my single 7600GTs scores 4200 in 3DMark06. These are cards that at stock speeds outperform the high end cards of the previous generation despite having 4 less pipelines, and only a 128-bit bus.

if it is a low end card, which i think any with a 128 bit bus is,then fair enuff.but i think the 7600gt has far more in it and is been let down by the 128bit mem bus.

i had a 7600gt myself and at higher rez with aa+af ie-1280x1024+ it was severely hampered by the 128bit mem bus.

lets face it,if it had a 256bit mem bus it would'nt be a low end card coz the performance would be better.

I sort of hope it turns out utter shit so that AMD don't completely fade away (and 'cause it will make me feel better about my 8800GTS 320MB:))

I don't think so, with 12 Pipelines the core was pretty much maxed out with the memory bandwidth provided by the 128-bit memory bus. There is only so much you can get out of 12 pipelines.

they were less than half the price of high end cards on release, both costing around £130 here on release, the same price the 6600gt, 7600gt, 8600gts, 1650xt etc also were on release

granted they are actually cut down versions of high end cards (well the 1950 pro isnt exactly, but kind of), but they were released to compete at the midrange price-point

Agreed, they're as mid-range as they come - I don't know what newtekie's been smoking...

They were the low end of the high end range. There were not mid-range cards.

X1900 Series=High-End
X1600 Series=Mid-Range
x1300 Series=Low-End

The X1950GT is the bottom of the High-End segment, the X1650XT is the top of the Mid-Range segment, and are priced accordingly, the X1950GT is more than the X1650XT.

It is as simple as that. The X1950Pro/X800GT wasn't meant to compete with mid-range cards, there were meant to fill the gap between the super-high-end and the Mid-Range.

Kick ass! i would have loved to see what an 8600GTS could do with a 256 bit memory interface. This is going to get good!!!

I very strongly disagree :)

you never know could beat a 8800GTS 320mb if the 8700 clocks like the 8600GTS i still want to see it against the cut down HD2950PRO and HD2900PRO
