With today high resolution monitors is it really necessary to have AA anymore?

It is not necessary as it was back when we were all running 1024x768 or 1280x1024 on our monitors, but the difference between no-AA and some-AA can be seen even at 1920x1200 on LCD monitors, it is just not as pronounced. I notice this a lot when playing around with Crysis. When going from no-AA to 4xAA a moderate difference can be seen on vehicles and buildings. However, going above 4xAA does little to improve the visuals, at least in any way my eyes can distinguish.

Interestingly though, when I was running Crysis at 1920x1440 on my old gigantic Trinitron CRT's, there was no need for any AA, because at that resolution most CRT (even high-end Trinitron tubes), they being to strain and blur the images slightly, giving the displayed content a type of natural and performance-penalty-free AA. A sort of a unexpected and unintended benefit of CRT tech I guess.

That would probably explain why i see no difference anything higher the 4xAA , i'ved got an flat 21" CRT monitor made by Sun (tube made by Sony Triniton?) but like i said before i do see a difference between 2xAA & 4XAA but not verry much & over 4xAA no difference at all.

Fermi demo at CES on 7th Jan?

So finally we might get to see this GPU and what it's really like.

According to our well informed industry sources, Nvidia will display Fermi GPUs at the upcoming CES in Las Vegas. This means we should be able to see it right on January 7th when the show starts.

The company won’t share all the information especially as after CES Nvidia wants to have its famous editor's days in Vegas and show them the power of Fermi. Since this is an NDA event, this is not something we will be attending anytime soon, but most of our good friends will.

I doesnt seem out of the question that a demo will be at CES, we can only hope that Nvidia might give a review site a chance to bench a bit.... but that will only happen if the performance is up to snuff.

What precisely will Nvidia be demonstrating at CES next week? No idea, but PC Games Hardware speculates it could be two Fermi cards running in SLI configuration.

Ya know anything past 4x AA is a waste of time. I cant tell much difference after 4x and I have a pretty unforgiving eye.

unless you're monitor only goes to 1680x1050 like mine. in which case 8x aa is more useful, though anything past that hasn't been necessary for me.

still though if you could hit it with decent frames, why not enable it if you have it?

With 2560x1600, sometimes more than 4xAA is needed, just to get rid of the usual jaggies. Biggest thing that annoys me is jaggy shadows...but the need for more than 4x AA changes from app to app.

Unfortuantely, 2560x1600 and AA don't mix well. I wonder if the situation will change...

And I thought 32xAA was an SLi thing since like 7800-series? Just didn't perform well then...

I played motogp 08 game with 2x aa and 4x aa (@ 1680x1050)
there is difference
