The 980 debuted in the same price segment. I'm not finding this any worse.

On top of everything else, Nvidia most likely knows that they can't push prices too far either, as then their products will simply not sell. Also keep in mind that cards like the GTX 780 launched at $649.99 and the GTX 770 and $399.99 and these cards are all of a sudden looking a lot less expensive, unless you go for the founders edition.

10 GHz VRAM sounds like a lot, but some of us run cards with 8 GHz VRAM and I haven't even tried pushing it further. Sure 2 GHz extra is nice, but doesn't sound quite as much as they are making hype around it. Especially since it's stuck on 256bit bus. One would expect at least 384bit with compression to really allow GPU to breathe. It's interesting how NVIDIA didn't opt for HBM for their high end and they'll leave it for the enthusiast cards only (Titan). Gotta wait for AMD's Polaris to see what's what and if my curiosity will be stronger than the actual need to get a new card...

It's interesting how NVIDIA didn't opt for HBM for their high end and they'll leave it for the enthusiast cards only (Titan).
So you advocate using HBM2+interposer that has assembly yield issues in conjunction with a new process node that very likely has its own yield issues for a volume production part? I'm guessing you don't work in the semicon industry, or if you do, you enjoy the thrill of imminent bankruptcy hanging over your head

Just out of interest, where precisely do you see Nvidia sourcing all this extra HBM2 from even if it were feasible to do so? Nvidia is prepping HPC orders that run into literally tons of HBM equipped cards. Should they divert HBM2 from multi-four-figure Tesla cards to consumer $600 items? Doesn't seem like the best return on investment if you ask me.
Gotta wait for AMD's Polaris to see what's what and if my curiosity will be stronger than the actual need to get a new card...
Yep, you never know - maybe AMD will surprise everyone and jam HBM2 onto a bunch of 128 and 256-bit cards in the sub-$350 markets - that'll show the bean counters in Santa Clara how things should be done.

...(1070 for 379$, when 970 was 329$ is fine, because it's a new process node)...

I'd laugh, but in this context, this is rather sad.

I have never seen any significant or even mildly noticeable gain from overclocking the memory on a performance GPU - where as the clock speed can definitely yield positive results.

Capacity of RAM seems far more important (despite the arguments) than speed at this point because it determines whether or not you are sitting there for twenty seconds when a game map loads, waiting for the textures to get shoved into VRAM and/or when you move around and pan the camera in normal gameplay.

If GDDR5x is better, great, but with small bit bus and knowing that past memory benefits little from overclocks, I'd rather have less costly GDDR5 and a lesser priced product.

What's sad is that ignore actual facts in order to maintain a flawed argument. Each to their own - if it keeps you sane then rock on.
You realize that 9710 is the number one overclocked score on 3dmark? Heck it was probably done under LN2.
Chilled water I believe. The overall score is pointless. Both those 980Ti's 3770K's are overclocked to 5GHz. The 1080 score is with a stock 3770K (3.9GHz max turbo) and some slow as f*ck bargain basement DDR3-1366 RAM (the Hardwareluxx member uses DDR3-2666).........and that's assuming that the score is legit and the driver is offering full compatibility.
Not much point arguing the whole thing, the reviews will sort out the comparison and sales will sort out its level of popularity. If the doom mongers are as on the money as they usually are, the cards should sell by the million if the previous threads are any indication.
You act like R9 Fury doesn't exist... You know, with actual functional HBM memory and all that...
Yes, so successful AMD couldn't wait to ditch it and divert production to the overpriced Pro Duo. Maybe the fact that AMD didn't discount the hell out of the cards - pricing them on performance based on the lower tier cards, would provide an inkling to the production costs.

No offense RejZoR, but Fury sold so well that Wiz nearly couldn't implement ASIC reading on it due to a lack of beta testers. Do the math.

Got an email yesterday morning from nvidia about the release date of the GTX 1080. Watched the announcement on YouTube and the moment CEO Huang mentioned that it was twice the performance of the GTX Titan X I went straight home and put up my GTX Titan X on eBay and it got sold in under 30 minutes it was sold I guess someone didn't get the memo lol. This better be faster than the Titan X!

The 1080 sounds really good, I am interested in seeing it in action as I would love to get 2 GPU's to replace my current trio. Not sure if I will wait or not for the big chips, depends on how powerful this segment is.

You would be surprised how much a difference it can make. Though the core does yield better results, even over locking HBM yielded some improvements.
And yet people not much different than you and me own R9 Fury cards. Your point being?
The problem is that HBM 2 is not quite mature enough for the big time where as GDDR5X is. AMD used HBM which is less capacity so if they want to go significantly higher the only option is HBM 2 in that area. If they are going to use it, it might be on the top end Titan from Nvidia and maybe the next top end from AMD however that will be awhile. It could go either way, but if we expect the top chips anytime soon it will probably be GDDR5X.

I can't believe that 1080 only has a single power connector, after I purchased that new case and had to route two sets of 8pin/6pin braided cables, which took hours of doing. Now I'm down to one set being used, and soon with the new card(s), only ONE cable.

BAh.

I returned my 980TI waterforce today. I was really digging it - but when I saw the announcement for May launch (June third party?) I thought it best to send it back now while I still can.

So back to 970 G1 SLI for now, which sadly I haven't been able to sell!

Faster than 980sli, not double the performance of a Titan X. Although, I sold one of my cards too.

Yeah except it's 2x efficiency & not 2x performance, assuming that was meant for games .
1070 is supposed to be faster than Titan X in VR when using simultaneous multiprojection, not in general. In general performance of 58 % more expensive GTX 1080 is around 20 % faster than Titan X, so 1070 should be clearly under, around 980 Ti or even under
Hope you didn't sell just based on that 2x vague number o_O

It's wise to sell, GM200 cards are about to lose value, I'm certainly selling mine.

At least I can run GTX 1080 SLI and keep utility cost lower and room cooler than if I was to sli the titan x s plus I'm about that VR tech can't wait to get the Rift or Vive...which one would y'all s rather get between the two?
