And nVidia did it all in name of cost cutting. Cost cutting of 6$/card. 6$ of shunt resistors, 1$ for each rail. This is complete BS on cards which are realistically now like 3000-3500Euro/unit if you can find one.

At this moment in time solution to the problem would be a total recall and redesign by splitting load between 2 12V 2x6 connectors with proper voltage/current regulation/balancing/limits on PCB. nVidia's reference 4090/5090 design really is bottom of the barrel stupidity. In itself Plug is OK (assuming no loose wires and botched connectors), but how PCB handles power delivery is sheer lunacy.

I was ready to get some for work, but I'm not so sure about that now (shame I got my Seasonic PX-2200W so early before seeing all this shit, but at least has rock solid plugs and wires). Perhaps after all this disaster PR nVidia will at least do properly 5080Ti?

Don’t count on it…
The design is already in play with 5080. Unless they do a refresh after 1+year.

If they wanted to keep this connector in line (or closer than now) with the “old” 8pin in terms of safety at least the 5090 should have 2 of them with current balancing.
No point without current balancing.

660-680W absolute max with a sustained power at no more than 350-400W.
With current balancing on top you keep every pin/cable with at least 50-60% safety margin and if anything burns then you can talk about user error.
