If the Quest 2 is $299 then FB has to be selling it at a loss. I mean the controllers alone have to be worth 100 or more which leaves the HMD at 200 bucks with an XR2 chip with an almost 4k resolution. I have a new picture showing off how small it is compared to the Oculus Go and wow.. It has to be the most comfortable VR HMD ever.

whoa that's a huge difference in ergonomics. Having a lower profile is going to make it feel so much better even if it were the same weight. The prospects of an even better wireless pc connect than Q1 through something like Virtual Desktop also makes this hard to pass up. I still have my G2 preorder, but I am sure this will end someday with having both. I just have too many hmd's at the moment (CV1, Go, Quest) it's time to start sharing the VR spirit with some friends and family and get these out of the house before buying anything else.
The difference is Steam has an offline mode and most games(at least the ones I have) can run without the Steam client running. However, I only have a handful of games on Steam. I buy most of my games on GOG and I do not use the Galaxy client.

what I mean is that it seems that the Quest2 can't even be used without a FB account and being online even if you're using it as a VR device connected to a PC.
Yep I can definitely understand that. I'm not a fan of requiring always online connections either, but in a few cases my desire to play outweighs that inconvenience.

It's not the inconvenience that I care much about(though that is a part of my issue with Steam), it's the ideal involved with DRM. The idea that you don't own your software library, but only renting it at the whim of the dev/Steam. The idea that a game I paid for can suddenly become unplayable because the dev no longer wants to allow it is absolutely un-fraking-acceptable. With the Quest2, FB is making a piece of hardware function in much the same way. It's aberrant and foul no matter what the reasoning or circumstances.

Yeah, the Quest 2 is a huge step in the right direction of performance and comfort with its modular head strap. I can't wait to get mine. It's also very interesting listening to Carmack talk about all of the great stuff they have in store for it. He said that he agrees that there should be a standard and pro design, but it's too early for that right now. I'm in the same boat as you. I have a Rift DK1, Gear VR, HTC Vive with deluxe audio strap, Rift S, and soon the Quest 2. I will buy an Index when the price drops and use it with my Vive base station as well.. lol

This is the only thing I'm worried about buying games on the Oculus store as well. If a game is offered on Steam and Oculus then I buy it on Steam. So far most of my games for Gear VR will work on the Quest/2, but a few won't and that sucks. I guess it's the nature of the beast. Honestly, I have trashed most of my physical games from years ago in my recent move to my new house. I really don't see it any different than buying movies on VHS tapes years ago and then re-buying for DVD then Blueray then digital.. lol

I feel the same way with games if the Dev took the time to make it compatible with another device then they need compensation. I just hate losing any old games in general. For example, during the DK1/DK2 days someone made a Sleepy Hallow experience and it was awesome to have people play it in VR at Halloween, but no one has updated it.

Seeing the reaction of various comment sections it might soon be on clearance sale since so many people deliver a big 'nope'.
I wonder if hardware hackers can hack it into a non-facebook headset.
Sure you'd lose the 'XR2' and all, but you'd get the headset with the lenses and high-res displays if you can somehow bypass the processor.

I'm not sure which comments your seeing of how has tried it? All the reviews I've seen have been overwhelmingly good other than the strap. I honestly, don't see how they could sell it any cheaper. I did see where someone has offered $5000 to the first person to jailbreak it. This should sell really well. They really haven't pushed the marketing for the Quest 2.

Yeah, it has wifi 6. Carmack didn't say anything about a dongle. You shouldn't need one.

Unless your PC does not have Bluetooth built-in, which most desktops do not. In that situation a Bluetooth 5.0 or better USB dongle would be needed.

EDIT; Seems I misread the specs. Thought I read somewhere that BT5.0 would be a wireless connection option, seems not. As it turns out PC connections require a USBC connection. No Bluetooth for use with Windows, Android, iOS/MacOS or Linux. Kinda sad and another point against the device..

I'm glad you brought up bluetooth either way because I saw yesterday that you can use wireless bluetooth earphones with Quest 2. All of the Oculus HMD's before would say not to use bluetooth due to lag. But yeah wireless gameplay doesn't use bluetooth. I'm pretty excited about wireless VR. I had my cable management system in my old house but I haven't put it back up in my new house. If wireless is as good as most people are saying then I won't put it up.

That's a shame buddy, but you have to do whatever makes you happy. I feel like this is a little early to worry to the extend people are worrying about.. The hardware is great but it has the worst cameras for viewing and it's hard enough to play most games on mobile hardware much less go into detail of tracking people over just counting what games you like or don't like.

Yes it's a fine device technologically, but everybody in every comment section in various countries all have the 'forced facebook account eh.. then nope'

What is so hard to understand or observe?
But perhaps you have reason to battle this reality, in which case I say sorry to cause turbulence, carry on.

No turbulence buddy. I was just asking what you have seen. I think the confusion is you're referring to just people complaining about the new Facebook login and I did see the backlash over that, but what I'm seeing is most people are forgetting about that and overwhelmingly accepting the Quest 2. I just find it hard to believe people accept being tracked by Google, Apple, Steam, MS, etc.. lol All of which make you create an account to use their store and product. Well, you can still create a local account to sign into windows but you can use their store without an MS account.

I don't think most people understand what's being tracked. Even the cameras on the Quest are black and white and are really bad at viewing. Carmack even said he doesn't understand how it even works for 6dof tracking but it does... lol The XBox S for $299 will track you more than the quest 2 hardware. Phones track more people than any consumer tech, but I don't see people saying don't by a smartphone.

Let's keep this thread focused on the Quest 2. If you want to keep this conversation going then create a new thread about Oculus forcing FB login. Thanks, buddy!

Sorry pal, but people rejecting the device because of the forced facebook account (and I did not mention tracking in that regard I'd like to point out) is right smack on target for this thread.
You are right that the discussion about tracking is a bit lopsided and people ignore huge trackers and getting upset about yet others though. But apart from any tracking, some people just don't want to be forced to be part of any 'facebook family'
Incidentally, on the subject of accounts, I suddenly got a popup on google translate recently that soon it would only be available when logged in, so requiring an account. And frankly I'm surprised I don't see a lot of reaction about that one on various tech-related sources. In fact I did not see it mentioned by anybody so far in my browsing the web. I guess I'm the only person left who isn't logged in on google 24/7.

No need to apologize, again this is a news thread about the Quest 2 having an XR2 chip, not a thread about having to use a Facebook account to log into Oculus which has more HMDs than the Quest 2. We have a VR & AR section that would be great to follow up with a thread based on having to use a Facebook account to use an Oculus supported device that I would join in the discussion.
