But if they have gone 2x2, maybe overall will be higher, and max not such a large jump. If it IS 2Gb ram, than that may push it a bit higher as well.

Gonna have to watercool them for them to overclock decently, if that's the case.

depends on the stock cooler too, the 5800's coolers were more than capable, if they wen't for something closer to a GTX480 style cooler, with lots of copper and heatpipes it should be A'ok

Well, the 5870 coolers fail in my house. Of course, I do beleive this is a driver problem(driver not ramping fan speed properly), but overheating causing throttle has been something I dealt with for many months. there is a couple of threads started by other users with the same problem, too. AMD's answer to fix the problem is manual fanspeed adjsutment...such laziness on thier part, IMHO.

I actually convinced now, that most of the problems I have had with these cards are a result of this issue, and that running at such high temps for extended periods of time has caused several cards to completely fail for me. I just RMA'ed another card late last week, as it was no longer stable at stock clocks(and it was sold as pre-overclocked model).

What I like to know is if they actually revamped CCC in any way. Better GUI for starters. Although I wouldn't be surprised if they simply changed it from ATI to AMD. Fast forward a bit...I wonder how many generations are left after this when low-mid range discrete cards will be still relevant when Fusion/Sandy Bridge derivatives start hitting the market.

Not many, that's for sure. I do not see add-in cards disappearing all together(that would kill both nV and AMD right now, IMHO), but we are fast approaching PCs basically becoming SOC consoles.

They are going to have to come up with something better then AFR if they want to still sell high end discrete boards when that happens IMO. It will be interesting to see any news with Fusion + 6000 series card just to see if they work together or not. But I think I recall that win7 may not support it. I vaguely remember though.

Slipping into paranoia now?

And just for the record here's some 48ROPs and whopping 1280bits worth of my Radeons that agreed to pose just for your amusement.

do you think i can be fooled by the picture like this?

that's abvious two cypress on each side and r790 in the middle. those two showdie size only around 330~340mm^2 and real cayman is far bigger chip than these two above...

this is cypress die picture

i think you are starting getting nervous now :D

this will be the end of day for all extreme enthusiast...i hate to say this but why can't these average idiot just go hit the wall and die......

it will be suck if pc can no longer able to upgrade or customize. it not just like both amd/nv but also intel and other silicon conductor as well. SOC console already exist 30 years ago as IBM XT

xt failed because of lack upgrade capability that everything are soldiered(ram, cpu, GPU so on...) except optical drive and hard drive were not soldiered on the board. why goes back to the past when everything already been perfect? i knew eePc and tablet pc sold well but these can't replace the performance desktop....

dell will never get my money with their crappy console-like pc!! ever!

beware of nvidia spy on this thread! these nvidia supporter had plan to spread false rumor to prevent amd from doing enthusiast product and several member in this forum are specious(who bought an nvidia card recently or work for nvidia.) they claim that amd won't go more than 32 rops or more than 256bit bus while nvidia will secretly make super power chip and getting amd a smackdown. the people who rumor that amd won't make enthusiast card and only make mid range card or saying mainstream market are more profit are mostly nvidia owners! i don't need to mention whoever make those false claim but you can find it yourself by check their rig spec. some of them never own a amd card. they even say they ain't going to buy amd card if they release bigger powerful GPU while their spec list says they have gtx470!!

this is how they discuss incoming gtx 485 in evga forum
source:http://www.evga.com/forums/tm.aspx?m=483316&mpage=2

i bet it must be these people that protest that caymen will be enthusiast level card. not even the nvidia fan like me can tolerate this anymore...you can hope nvidia bring better product but framing the rival's product is just not right!

call me troll if you want but i had to spoke the truth!

you can't have 48 rops on 256bit bus, logically odd rops has to go with odd bus. and that rumor is completely false.

So the ATI 2900 GT with 12 ROPs and a 256-bit bus never existed?

2900gt was 16 rops but 4 been disable..like 5830 was disable 1/2 of rops while keep the same bus. 256bit bus on exist evergreen bus architecture can only under one condition, either have to be 32 or 64rops. unless the full core of cayman is 64 rops it will not be possible to have 48rops on 256bit bus

But you were fooled by it, regardless. You happen to miss those couple posts stating they are R600s (HD2900XTs), and not Cypress' on each side of the RV790?
that's abvious two cypress on each side and r790 in the middle. those two showdie size only around 330~340mm^2
Oh wow, you missed by some 100mm² or so... Those dies, being plain R600s measure exactly 426,30mm² (20,30mm × 21,00mm).
and real cayman is far bigger chip than these two above...

Now this is interesting  Obviously until we see them in action later on in October, we will truly never know. Though I don't believe AMD will lose out on another chance to whip-ass NVIDIA back into submission :D

First, let's think about what AMD might come up with on 19 October - an HD6770 with overall performance akin to the current HD5850, and an HD6870 with possibly up to 30 per cent higher performance than the default HD5870........

First, let's think about what AMD might come up with on 19 October - an HD6770 with overall performance akin to the current HD5850

The more I've thought about it the less impressive that feat becomes. An overclocked 768MB 460 comes pretty darn close to a 5850 as is with prices ranging from $130 (newegg special the other day) to $180. Of course the 6770 XT will overclock too but you have to wonder what the headroom will be like if the stock core is 900 MHz.

So it all comes down to pricing. If it's $200+ (not a stretch) I'll just get a 768MB 460, if it's $160 then I'm interested.

come on come on come on, I can't wait.... I'm hoping this forces Nvidia to play it's hand in the form of fully unlocked GF104/106's.... next few months will be awesome.

Barts to start with will hopefully force a 384-sp GTX460 variant, or lower prices, or both.

My best guess is that Barts XT will be faster than the Radeon HD 5850, introduced at $249 US, while Barts Pro will be introduced at $179 US. This, of course, depends on Barts XT under performing Cypress XT and nVidia not starting a price war prior to launch. If Barts XT is faster than the Cypress XT, I look for Barts XT to be called the Radeon HD 6830 and introduced at $299, Barts Pro to be called the Radeon HD 6770 and introduced at $219, and Barts LE to be introduced on October 19th with the rest of the Barts series, called the Radeon HD 6750, and introduced at $149.

With a 725 MHz stock frequency, Barts Pro should overclock like the GTS 450.

Here quote from that website. If any truth to the rebranding AMD may lose credibility, bad enough they scrap ATI logo. By doing the rumord rebrand they are telling people HD 6000 is a refresh of Evergreen, nothing new and won't perform all that faster. This may also keep prices higher for both HD 5800's and HD 6800/6900's. This IMO is bad for us that want to buy something new.

The sources from two companies were confused at branding change for AMD, which sees moving the Barts Pro/XT part into the Radeon HD 6800 Series, top-end single-GPU and dual-GPU sharing the "HD 6900" Series name, while the lower end would get typical 6700, 6600, 6500 and 6400. The interesting bit is that some of the numbers are reserved for AMD Fusion parts that will come to market in 2011.

source?

if amd just want to rebrand and sell the same card that doesn't even change anything...that is it for them. their last change to fight back and reverse the revanue and reputation. they should realize fighting aside with console ported and tablet PC will be dead end as eventually people will go on for performance again. if amd choose not to launch new gpu just because waiting for new gen console come out will be the stupidest thing they ever do and give all their market share back to nV again.

fusion and SOC will not replace the performance market. even with many feature like touchable screen....they are for average noob exclusively and whoever claim average market has 50% of market share had ignore a serious fact- they don't aften spent money on electronic product and they may end up purchase a SOC console and last 5~7 years and rather spend money with family and other social network/dating, while high end market has faster refresh rate(they change computer more often). take average market will be suicidal.

Knowing that well over 50% of the market is an average user, what you're saying would kill manufacturers. Extreme enthusiasts might comprise a total of 5% of the market value.

yeah these 50% are hardly going to buy a new pc in the next few year after they had purchase one while enthusiast will change part even few month. you do realize in the last 2 decade enthusiast dominating the market while average people never interest on computer, especially female market. now they may expanding more consumer base by introduce console like hardware and so fancy feature to amuse average house wife and girls. my mom for example she kept saying how wonderful win7's touchable feature that's on a tiny tablet pc and willing to throw another bulk just because they look cute while refuse to let me get herself a new desktop(her was p4 1.7ghz, P4m900, 512mb ram...etc) because she say desktop don't look attractive...needless to say, they just seem to be driven by sensation that logical fact.

its not rebrand but just change naming scheme just like 9800 to X800

But what it hints at that yeilds are bad on Cayman(most like due to die size), so they have shifted the chips around in the naming to make up for a lack of a "high-end" cayman SKU.

But what it hints at that yeilds are bad on Cayman(most like due to die size), so they have shifted the chips around in the naming to make up for a lack of a "high-end" cayman SKU.

just what took TSMC so f***ing long to deal with 40nm? it's been god damn 2 years already and they still can't get it up? even the yield will be lower than cypress due to die size of 435~440mm^2 it is still way higher yield than g100's 529mm^2.

Yields are fine. October for Barts, November for Cayman the way it's been all along.

It's all smoke and mirrors, IMHO.

IF...IF barts IS 6870, then I'd question yields. It would be basically the first time ATi did not use a gpu within multiple SKUs that i can think of.

BUT...

Maybe Barts is 6770 AND 6850. Then Cayman could be 6870, and 6950, while 6970 would be dual Barts.

Then the naming scheme would make sense to me.

I mean, I agree, at this point TSMC should have very little yield issues, but, at the same time, they are starting up a second 40nm fab line, and the yields on the new line ARE NOT going to be up to par like the old fab line. I beleive the original fab line is OK, but hte new one is quite questionable.

Also, both AMD and nVidia are currently getting gpus minted onthe same fab line, and once the second line ramps up, this may not be the case, and that may affect either side negatively. Time will tell.
