It'sjust a thought with no intention to start a conversation along that route.

The site personnel here are especially sensitive about... say a clean end to discussion on video workflow or anything else straying from the path set out. ;)

I have two LG (HL-DS-ST) GH24NSC0's. I just had to replace one of them after 8 years of solid weekly use, so I bought a few spares. Quite solid; I'm very satisfied.
I stocked up on a few hundred Taiyo Yuden CD-R blanks as soon as I heard TY sold off the brand; I still have quite a few left. I also use TDK, Verbatim and HP CD-R blanks, all for ripped and downloaded music for CD playback on my Yamaha/Dual/Ortofon/KEF stereo system.
I also burn a lot of DVD+RWs for my dad, YouTube downloads of various videos and UK TV show episodes. Almost all exclusively TDK-branded.

I also have a few older games that require a disc in the drive, especially the older version of Euro Truck Simulator 2.

I simply cannot imagine any rig I own without DVD/CD combo burners.

I recently purchased an Asus BW-16D1HT so I can play some Blu Rays. Might buy the OWC Mercury enclosure for it.
I own one. Let me know if you have any questions. Bought mine from Adorama with the LG (HL-DT-ST) WH16NS"40" (I think it is actually an NS50) inside.

I never looked into it before since I don't have any UHD bluray discs. After doing a quick search it doesn't appear that AMD supports anything like SGX so you're basically SOL if you want to try and physically play an UHD bluray on your PC if you're running AMD or any Intel CPU of the 12th gen or later. Watching normal bluray movies works just fine on any system as long as you have a program that'll play bluray discs; I make use of Cyberlink PowerDVD to watch bluray discs on my computer.

Intel has also deprecated SGX on their processors because it's a security vulnerability. 11th gen onwards (so the past three, Rocket, Alder and Raptor Lake) no longer support it. This leaves the DRM issue on UHD BD pretty absurd, as only 6th to 10th gen Intel CPUs meet the criteria, newer processors don't and neither do any of AMD's offerings.

I am not sure if it actually poses a security vulnerability in itself; I think it just has security vulnerabilities that make it useless but that do not otherwise make the CPU less secure. I can disable it in the UEFI of my Kaby Lake Refresh Latitude.

By itself no, but it can be attacked and the data in the secure enclave can be extracted by a malicious actor (ironically, this would be used to crack UHD BD security). Intel responded by discontinuing support on newer processors to disable the attack vector. Good read:

I assume that enclosure and the SATA to USB controller is pretty reliable? Do you like that combination? Have you tried it on Windows 10/11 or on Linux?

I read that the WH16NS was a good drive. I also read the slim LG BU40N was good.

Edit: Looking at the eBay images, date code on the Asus I just bought is probably May 2013, which means I won't be able to flash it. It was sold new in box. Hopefully I am incorrect. If it is 2013 not going to try flashing the firmware, not worth bricking it.

I think the AnyDVD software should still play regardless but could be wrong.

AnyDvd can decrypt BD and 4K. You must have a drive that can read 4K.

I recently bought my 1st BLU Ray DVD since back in 2010. I wasn't able to play the BLU Ray DVD's back then so I gave them away. I bought the HALO season 1 BLU Ray set thinking that I could play it on my LiteON ATAPI iHAS124. That didn't work at all. Then I remembered that my Lenovo All in One PC has a BLU Ray DVD drive built in. I tried to play HALO on Cyberlink Power DVD 10 which was bundled software on the Lenovo machine. That didn't work either ( you have to upgrade to Power DVD 18 at a cost). I ended up buying an open box Sony BDP-S1700 online for about the same cost as the Cyberlink software! All I can say is WOW. Now I can play HALO season1 and my meager 24 regular DVD collection on the Sony BDP. The bigger surprise is that I can play my extensive 4TB movie collection through the USB port on the Sony BDP and watch on my 40" LED TV!

Gave my external USB enclosure with a laptop dvd drive to my friend as I just don't need one anymore myself. If I need to burn for example an audio CD, I'll use my laptop for it.

As a followup, got this drive, its working great, says manufactured January 2017 on the drive label. I'm running it on a SNANSHI USB C to SATA adapter with wall wart power supply but will probably buy the OWC Mercury Pro.

Can't edit previous post any longer, but the OWC Mercury Pro Optical was a dud, didn't detect in any of my computers so I guess I'll be using that SNANSHI USB C to SATA adapter going forward. A real shame, the OWC build quality looked nice. I'll be sending it back.

Love physical media. Got this in the mail two days ago and I've now got it copied to my plex server.
20230320_202125.jpg

I've been putting my LG WH16NS40 drive to work lately (just went through adding Friends a few weeks ago and a few dozen movies I picked up with the Friends seasons).

Great show, glad I finally picked up the series. Sadly, it was never released on discs in the States and best reason I can find out is due to music rights. I had to get a copy of the series from the UK.

I guess you can stream the show on Hulu or Disney+ (? maybe?), but I don't want to always be streaming and relying on a streaming service to have what I want to watch. Or the fact that I may have to pay some other subscription for a channel I don't currently subscribe to. I haven't actually looked, but if this show is available on Disney+ it can only be a matter of time before some cry baby bitch complains about something in an episode (or more) and the show or some episodes gets pulled. Disney has pulled a episodes from other shows they own....

I installed an Asus BC-12D2HT BluRay Burner in my new workstation. It was a hard job to find a case where i can use the BDW and also an 360mm and a 420mm radiator for my custom loop. The case i bought can handle arounf 12 51 /4" drives, 3* 360mm Radiators and an 40/480mm radiator at once. That should be enough cooling for my build. ;)

Love having two optical drives for ripping my DVDs/BD. Sometimes one just won't read a file - the disc is pristine, no scratches, fingerprints, dirt, nothing. But for some reason a file just won't read on MakeMKV. Drop the disc into the other drive and problem solved! Just ran into this issue on Season 1, disc 2 for 3rd Rock from the Sun.

I just finished adding Coach to my collection, working on 3rd Rock From the Sun, then 'til Death and finally Grounded for Life. I'll be busy the next few days copying and transcoding.

On a side note, my old dumbass just figured out how to utilize both optical drives at once with MakeMKV....wish I knew this years ago, would have saved me a lot of time.

Another side note, Best Buy is stopping the sales of DVDs/Blu-Ray discs come 2024. Sad times for those of us that still like physical media that things are going this route. I see movies make it to theater and then go to streaming soon after, but fewer and fewer are making it to DVD/Blu-Ray. I'm working on stocking up as much as I can (see above with my recent additions).

This is stupid(not you, just them). BestBuy has lost their way a bit.

Sorry, I must have missed this reply at the time, but better late than never, I guess.

I have only used the OWC Mercury + WH16NS40 with Linux (various distributions) and OpenBSD (had issues with burning BD-Rs on OpenBSD, it would only create coasters, but pretty sure it is not related to the drive/enclosure; burning CDs worked fine). I have never used Windows 11; I am actually planning to spin it up in a Hyper-V VM on my EliteBook (which I think does not have TPM 2.0, so that is the only way to run it). I have not had any reliability issues with the drive/enclosure so far. All modern LG drives are known to be cheaply built (not to last), although the (more expensive) BD drives less so than their DVD burners. Pioneer is better for new BD drives.
