Here are some examples of compact USB sticks or adapters. It would be relatively easy to engineer something that fits a 1,5TB (current highest) or 4TB (future MicroSDUC) card that inserts into the charging port. It's possible that the connector itself would be bigger than the housing.

I doubt the first one with the USB-C is a USB-Data Stick. Prove me wrong!
It's not. It's a Yubico security key. The point was not to say hey look at all these multi terabyte miniscule sticks. It was to show whats possible in this form factor, instead if this monstrosity strapped to the back of the phone with a protruding cable. I mean jeez - next they strap a 24TB spinning HDD there?

Isn't that what micro sd was supposed to be for!?
That's why I don't buy £1000 phones. A £250 one does exactly the same things, except for maybe gaming, which is crap on a touchscreen anyway.
You'd think that buying a $1000 phone would get you enough storage in the first place, right?
At least there's a MicroSD slot for you add an additional 1TB for $75, right?

The market is stupid.

Before pulling out the pitchfork you've got to remember that this product is probably not intended for people filming their pets or casual holidays... the iPhone 15 pro (and the regular 15 with the Blackmagic app) can record HDR ProRes video...1 min of ProRes take up 5GB. Yes. 5Gb for 1 minute.

Just to get an idea, a full sized SD of 512GB UHS II that can write at 250Mb/s cost around 399€ in France. And even some fully fledged hybrid cameras won't allow you to write some video format on an SD card, CFexpress or external SSD only. You guys are probably not the target for such a product, but rather people using an iPhone as a B cam for more ambitious projects.

For storage expansion micro sd was the way to go.
Unfortunately they killed it to enforce storage sizes and cloud """solutions"""

I suspect this device will fade into obscurity being that it is for Apple
But it's just an SSD. Right? What stops it from being used as a regular (external) SSD for your computer?
Strange enough I never had a problem with Micro sd failing and SSDs face the same problems, some good, some bad.
What I mean by garbage is that they feature abysmal write speeds. Some of them are so piss shit poor that a USB 2.0 Flash Drive would outperform them.

And then you know damn well that the average user doesn't pay attention to the performance stats on the back of the package, they only see a cheap price and wonder why their new MicroSD card sucks.

MicroSD card that has questionable quality and durability vs a SSD with much better components(Granted I am not in support of removal of memory card slots). For video shooters using external SSDs over microSD cards that generally share SIM slot is always much better.
Yeah, it's a moot point since Apple doesn't even have MicroSD support, but if you're buying a $1329 phone, you're probably not the sort of person buying cheapo MicroSD cards off AliExpress with garbage write performance.

Sandisk/Samsung MicroSD cards are my go-to and at $60-70 in 1TB capacities they're capable of 130MB/s of sequential write speeds which are plenty fast enough for even 8K60 HEVC video or running as additional storage for installed games on a Deck/Ally/Claw/Legion Go/Switch etc.

If you're shooting 8K60 RAW then you aren't using an iPhone since the flagship iPhone 15 Pro Max tops out at 4K60 and there's no way to create 8K footage nor to do 4K RAW. For stills, yes - but then you don't really need the same sequential write speeds...

I couldn't have said it better myself. People just wants to let out their pent-up emotions.

Meanwhile, no one in their right mind would consider an SD card as a decent replacement for an SSD in 99% of any other given situation.

If you have 500gb+ of stuff on your phone, you have a problem. I only have some music on mine and a few pics. I bet most avg bods don't even back them up and if they lost it, they would lose hundreds of pics. Most people i know with a iphone don't even have a PC, and i'm sure icloud is not going to back up 500gb+ without been a pita and costing some $$.

At those prices Apple can absolutely afford to add a TB or 2TB worth of onboard storage, but hey when you charge 10x what it probably costs you & your fans blindly defend that who cares? They also charge 2-5x their nearest competitor when upgrading RAM/NAND on Macs :nutkick:

raw video files aren't the only format that require high writing speeds. You have to take a closer look at how the files are encoded. Those are the recording mode of the Lumix SII5x, as you can see even H.264 4k30p sustained can be too much even the fastest full size SD cards, and require an SSD. And ProRes IS NOT available for the SD cards, SSD only.

Apple recommend a minimum of 220MB/s for 4k 60 in pro res. Wich isn't something that a 70$ 1Tb SD card will offer.

Wow, 220MB/s for 4K60? That's an absolutely abysmal encoder!

I mean, ProRes wasn't designed for space efficiency, you can use the HEVC or H.264 if space efficiency is what you value the most. ProRes is an editing codec, it's going to give you more leeway to color correct. while being lighter and easier to record than a raw format (internal raw recording is a patent troll area, Look at Nikon vs RED, most cameras need additional gear to record in raw. ProRes raw is a thing, but Nikon might sue them if it's internal :D ‘They are Destroying the Camera Industry’: RED Slammed Over Patents | PetaPixel. Nikon found and agreement with RED... which might have involved them buying the whole company)
It's an optional recording format of the iPhone not the default.

Average users don't even need speed. They just need a storage medium for their photos and highly compressed 1080p SDR videos.

LOL "You can store and manage your ProRes files on your iPhone"

Not with craptastic storage capacities and file sizes 30 times larger than HEVC files, you cant!

It'd probably be less of a marketing brag if they were honest: "You can store and manage a ProRes file on your iPhone"

Pathetic of Panasonic not to offer 1 CFExpress Type A card at least, which are backward compatible with SD UHS II and the new Type 4.0 cards do 1800MB/s, but the older Type 2.0 can still do 900MB/s.

Make solution to problems that should not be in the first place.

To be fair... how much shit videos we make with phones these days, none? All those tik tok wh0res okay, poor mans onlyfans?

For those places 1080p30 is still more than enough... getting that away to any cloud or local wifi enabled storage is zero problems.

SDCARD is a way to go, for sure. But also... i don't have anything worthy in my phone that canmot be erased if it is it is backuped on NAS, you should not ever carry worthy data in your phone, it gets stolen, lost, destroyed... it is stupid to do so. Removable storage has the same flaw. You don't have a backup unless you have backup of your backup.
Even a poor mans onlyfans will cost $6 per month. I'm not giving $6 per month to some "model".

Let's not even go there! :fear:

Sometimes I wish normal, everyday phones didn't have cameras in them. The amount of stupid, senseless 1-minute videos I get confronted with on Facebook when I open it to check something (which isn't very often thank God) is unreal. TikTok is even worse. It's a blight on the human intellect. It seriously shouldn't exist.

Agreed. I always back up my photos to my hard drives (yes, in plural) after a holiday. That way, the 256 GB internal storage in my phone is plenty.

Dont assume that you only have a few GBs worth of info on your phone that applies to other people. Sometimes I will have over 500gb worth of videos on my phone. I use a 1tb Samsung s10+ with a 1tb sd card, I have enough storage for all my videos that I will need. Your experience only applies to you.

Type A is a very Sony thing, they are the only camera makers to use them, and everyone else is using type B. I cannot say for sure why.

Now Panasonic probably did that for product segmentation. Just like how the G9II got dual SD, but the GH7 got CF express. The base S5II is supposed to be a mid-range still camera first competing with the like of the R6 ( dual SD camera as well which it massively undercut)The S5IIx is the same camera but with the option to record on an SSD and therefore unlocks more codecs.

Another thing to note, while their competition offers CF Express (at a higher price) they do not offer the option to record on an SSD. With The Nikon Z6, Canon eos R5, and Sony cameras, you cannot plug an SSD directly into the camera, so you must buy a CF Express card. Or buy a fairly expensive external recorder. With the S5II Panasonic went for value for the money, CF express is expensive for the capacity that they offer: 169€ for 256 GB, when you can get a 2TB Sandisk extreme external SSD for 129€. Yes, it's more cumbersome to carry around, but you save so much money. And you get data redundancy for cheap, every other camera but Sony forces you to buy a CF express to do so. But Sony doesn't do mid-range modern cameras you've got to buy their older models, using older sensors, older stabilization tech, older AF systems, and so on.

The perfect camera doesn't exist :D

Yeah, it's a moot point since Apple doesn't even have MicroSD support, but if you're buying a $1329 phone, you're probably not the sort of person buying cheapo MicroSD cards off AliExpress with garbage write performance.

Sandisk/Samsung MicroSD cards are my go-to and at $60-70 in 1TB capacities they're capable of 130MB/s of sequential write speeds which are plenty fast enough for even 8K60 HEVC video or running as additional storage for installed games on a Deck/Ally/Claw/Legion Go/Switch etc.

I would add Delkin(have used their industrial CF cards and they still make SLC based cards not sure of microSD card quality), Nextorage(Off shoot of Sony engineers) and Prograde(started by Lexar/Micron engineers) to list of good microSD cards to go for. These days WD/Sandisk has joined Kingston for iffy memory cards.

Type A is a very Sony thing, they are the only camera makers to use them, and everyone else is using type B. I cannot say for sure why.

These days CFx is extremely well priced, I picked up couple of Prograde 512GB cards this week for ~$140 each. V60 rated SD cards of same capacity are more expensive than that while being extremly slow. Granted I rarely shoot video and mostly use camera for macro photography so those 512GB cards are there as long term storage inside the camera to forget about.
