I remember when cases all included a speaker. I seem to remember way back when it was possible for games to direct sounds through that speaker as well (i.e. when games booted directly off of floppies).

I still connect simple speakers to my builds, it's useful to determine if the system has hung or booted.

Wait, you mean there are cases without a disk activity LED??? or a reset button?
>what has this world become.jpg
The Corsair 280X I used to have doesn't have an activity LED, and it's a £100 case. The Aerocool Aero One Mini I had before that has its second button configured as an RGB colour changer button by default, but you can reroute its cable to the motherboard and make it serve as a reset button if you want (I did). These atrocities against mankind are certainly becoming a thing, unfortunately. Luckily, I don't have these problems with the el-cheapo Kolink Citadel Mesh that I use now, not to mention its airflow is way better than that of the other two.

Absolute lawlessness. Top mounted power buttons should be purged from the planet.
It's not that bad when your PC is on a separate desk/table next to your main desk. :)

Smaller market means fewer buyers means higher production costs for major manufacturers, then there’s all of the tiny companies producing a few hundred cases.

ITX should be more common than it is, though. How many users need more than one expansion card? I know a dozen people are going to respond talking to about their sound card and ODD, but they’re in the minority, as are the producers of those things (outside of the enterprise space). Also I have a dtx PC with a RAID card and 10G NIC so please don’t @ me :)

Not to mention that even the biggest cases don't have space for ODDs nowadays for God knows what reasons.

Personally, I love mini-ITX, but it can be a bit difficult to service and upgrade (especially with water cooling), so my sweet spot is micro-ATX. I wouldn't want a bigger system than that.

Unnecessary lighting and glass windows.

Call me old fashioned by my case is tucked away in my desk where it can't be seen anyway.
You might be interested in silverstone's latest case lineup then. All of the new FARA XXX non-Z (ex. FARA 311) cases have solid side panels and zero lighting. Unlike the DIYPC specials though they're actually modern and enjoyable to build in.

I made "5.25-inch bays" a priority when searching for my current rig. Settled on the Phanteks Enthoo Pro. Big, roomy case, plenty of room for the AIO radiator and the optical drive and a pair of 6TB spinners and low-and-slow fans galore. No reset button, though.

fad

noun

1. an intense and widely shared enthusiasm for something, especially one that is short-lived; a craze.

There are uses for it though, it's just gaming (why everyone's getting one) isn't one.
I'd like an SLC M.2 drive.

Depends on the game. For example, when playing the GTA V mod FiveM on some heavily modded servers, an nvme SSD can shorten the loading time from 5 minutes to 1 minute, no joke.

Midtower huh? and what about the airflow

Not part of the nvme fad yet but my mobo has onboard LEDs that supposedly blink when you install one of those drives. SuperMicro cases do support blinking as their front panel is more complex than the average case, or at least that's what the pinout on the mobo indicates, there's 3.3V pins and room for several LED cables, even one for network activity so you don't have to peek the back of the case to check the link/usage LEDs.
Hi,
Yeah not sure m.2's are a fad but they are a pita to mess with
I have a couple 500gb 970 evo and a evo plus and don't even use them.

I use hot swap bays for 2.5" ssd and hdd's these damn things just make life to freaking easy to swap os's... than m.2 could ever be
I don't transfer large files all over the place "except 2.5" drives" ;) and app load times are marginally faster on m.2's so hard pass on any m.2 I'll let others brag about m.2 perks

For my tastes the Corsair Carbide 500R was the best case ever made. I'm glad I bought two of them back when Newegg had them for $59-69 after rebate. I'll never get rid of them. No tempered glass is also a huge plus for me.
I agree and will add the following.
I have several 400R and 500R. Brand New in Storage. These will be the last ones I will ever use in this life. Because they are "THAT" good and are a great reason why I am able to keep my entire rig cool with only 3 fans needed. The Air Flow is excellent and so is the versatility.

Again I have 5 SSD's and 1 HDD that are hot swappable because of the ability to use my 4, 5.25 inch drive bays in the front with my ICY DOCK setups as posted previously. I have my Blu Ray player because I love to watch movies while working.

The Reset switch is a great feature when I've had a freeze or 2 (due to a Windows update).

My rig is what IMHO is what a computer is all about. It's not about the eye candy which will cost you up to 25% of the total cost or more just for looking neat. Yea those water cooled computers with all of the RGB are a pain in the @$$ to service. Did a few. Hate them a lot and used to add a surcharge to clean them.

I discovered last week icy dock makes various hot swap M.2.
ICY DOCK also has the Frontal version as well but that is quite expensive for the moment. Perhaps in the near future as I have a slot that is not used.

I know what the word mean, but when has increased ever performance been a fad? Is faster USB speeds a fad? CPU performance? Storage capacity?

And it's great for gaming. Loading times sucks. If a SATA SSD cost as much as a NVMe drive (or is within spitting difference), and you have a slot for it, why buy the slower one?

With 4 of them, I have been Kattered enough by them, so I went with a Bit Fenix M2022 since it has the power and reset buttons on the side.

A negative for me is the lack of a USB C port and status LED's (HDD). There also needs to be more inverted cases to break up the cookie cutter style of cases that is out right now.

Yes indeed, I ran inverted for years with my Stackers.. I miss the option.
