Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE) today announced that the cumulative sales of the PlayStation3 (PS3) computer entertainment system reached a milestone of 70 million units worldwide as of November 4, 2012 - less than six years after the platform launched in 2006. SCE also announced that sales of the PlayStationMove motion controller surpassed 15 million units worldwide as of November 11, demonstrating continued growth and momentum of the PS3 platform.

The PS3 system has delivered high quality, award-winning entertainment experiences since its launch. Throughout its lifecycle, the PS3 system has continued to evolve with more streamlined design, larger Hard Disk Drive (HDD) capacity, and new features through software updates. In September 2012, SCE launched the new PS3 system, which has a reduced volume and weight of more than 50 percent compared to the original PS3 model, and of 25 percent and 20 percent respectively compared to the slim PS3 model launched in 2009. The new PS3 has been well received by consumers around the world.

Along with the introduction of PS3 in November 2006, SCE launched PlayStationNetwork, which now operates in 59 countries and regions around the world. PlayStation Network supports free community-centric online gameplay, exclusive games from independent developers and major publishers, and a broad range of entertainment applications across movies, music, and sports. PS3 owners can access 170,000 downloadable digital content including 57,000 game content worldwide from PlayStation Network. In October 2012, SCE redesigned PlayStationStore for PS3, offering a more streamlined and accessible store experience, including a stunning new user interface, simple search, and powerful content discovery. The new store is now available in Europe and North and Latin America with more countries and regions to follow.

PlayStation Plus, the subscription service package on PlayStation Store that offers exclusive benefits such as discounts on games or online storage for game saves, started to offer an "Instant Game Collection" in North America and Europe in July 2012. The Instant Game Collection enables PS Plus members to enjoy popular titles from third party developers and publishers as well as SCE Worldwide Studios at no extra cost. SCE has also enhanced the content offering for PS Plus members in Japan in November.

Introduced in September 2010, the PlayStation Move motion controller that enables users to intuitively play games is now supported by a wide range of titles with more than 400 as of November 2012, including Sports Champions 2, LittleBigPlanet Karting (Sony Computer Entertainment). Additionally, this month marks the global launch of Wonderbook, a new peripheral that delivers the next evolution of storytelling and a unique experience exclusively on PS3. Wonderbook uses the PlayStationEye camera to take augmented reality to spectacular new places, while drawing players into new worlds and allowing them to interact with stories as they tilt or rotate it, or simply turn the pages.

PS3 has gained tremendous support from 3rd party developers and publishers worldwide. Cumulative number of software titles for PS3 reached 3,590 with more than 595 million units sold worldwide. More exciting and attractive new titles are to be released from third party developers and publishers as well as SCE Worldwide Studios, including Assassin's Creed III (Ubisoft Entertainment.), Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 (Activision, Inc), PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale (Sony Computer Entertainment), towards the holiday season. In addition, software titles that support "cross platform feature" such as LittleBigPlanet 2: Cross Controller Pack, PlayStation, Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time (Sony Computer Entertainment) are also expected to be released. With these titles, SCE will deliver a ground-breaking gaming experience by leveraging the capabilities of both PS3 and PlayStation Vita.

SCE will continue to further expand the PS3 platform and create a world of computer entertainment that is only possible on PlayStation.

I know :), but still I got my PS3 and like it, mostly bought it for gmaes what isnt and wont probably be on PC, like God of War 3, FF13 and many more :)

I only use my PS3 for playing exclusives. Same goes for 360.
Once you game on PC, there is no going back.:p

I don't know if the PS3 can sustain sale with Nintendo releasing the Wii u which will be eaten up in the Japanese market while the 360 is so strong in the west. This on top of no price cut and very few exclusives going into the holiday season seems like the ps3 might end up being completely out of the race.

Same here, with the added bonus of Blu-Ray. 1080p may not be much in the world of PCs, but for movies it's great. Also: sound. Also: some games really don't translate to PC well, like Street Fighter (I refuse to use an xbox controller on my PC. That's just wrong. Especially when I prefer the PS controller anyway.)

With all the flameboy wars going on, it's refreshing to see that the X360 and PS3 both hit the huge number at practically the same moment in their lifespan, while PCs sold that number about three decades ago :p

Nice to hear, games consoles are sweet, who's getting a Wii U!?

Bought my PS3 for GT5

Indeed one of the best games the PS has. twas a shame though the PS's RSX can't do much about the aliasing in the game.

I'd like a PS3 but I probably won't get one this late in the game. I want it for Bluray and a few gems like Gran Turismo but since the next generation is around the corner and I can get a stand alone Bluray player for €90 I doubt I'll get one.

And it's a little strange the 360 only reached 70 million 2 months ago even with the head start. Hasn't the 360 been the top selling console for most of this year ahead of the Wii? And it's always ahead of the PS3?

I was thinking to buy it but than it would be buy just for one game and its wrong.so ill better wait to drop a price because bloody 300gbp it too much

Must have been the release of the smaller PS3. However I think the Slim was the best version they made. The new top-loading one is a lot louder and the top load is annoying. My opinion.

PS3 Slim owner.

Yea, I definitely won't be getting a Wii-U.

Yea, just spend the only on graphics card update and play PC games for a few years until PS4 comes out. Then you can decide whether to buy PS4.
Personally I never watched blueray movies.

Big number not to impressive being that both the other consoles have exceed that and they've all been on the market for more then . . . what 7 years now :shadedshu . I do remember the PS3 being a BEAST when it came out, $600 price tag, blu-ray, all sorts of amazing goodies. However was kinda hope'n for a new console about 2 years ago.

Tell me about it, the launch price is ridiculous.

Why are they still counting after so long? Maybe Nintendo will counter this news with the current sales of the Gamecube. A quarter of these sales are due to previous PS3 failure (YLOD, drive failure), nothing compared to more than half of the xbox sales due to RROD and e72.

I own Xbox360 and PS3 as well as Vita and 3DS. (Plus good old PSP & DS)

The reason is quite simple. There aren't enough games on PC.

I will probably buy Wii U but not at launch. I will wait for a price drop. No point in buying it at day one when there aren't decent games for it.

?

I am backlogged so hardcore by the amount of PC games that I have accidentally owned in the past 3 years, I dont know what to do with my self. Hell, there are probably more FREE games on the PC than games on any consoles, and probably better too.

I could have 48 hour days and still not beat half the games that I own by the end of the year.

With $60 I could buy one AAA console game. On the right day, with $60 I could get 10 AAA PC games.

You have me at a loss.

How interesting considering it was released an entire year before the PS3.

and considering how many people have had to buy multiple units due to such a high rate of failure.

Every person I know who owned an xbox has had atleast 1 failure.

Out of those people, more than half have had 2 or more failures. One friend is on his fifth xbox 360.

I am not sure if this is coincidence, but it is the truth.

I also own a Playstation, PS2(slim), sega, sega saturn, a sega dreamcast, a SNES, NES, COLECOVISION, Atari, and a PS3. Only the PS3 has failed, the Blu-ray drive stopped working.

Well, if PC can have Yakuza series, White Knight chronicles, the ever-awesome valkyria chronicles (Not 2), Catherine, Dead or Alive, Persona, Resonance of Fate, Heavy Rain, Crisis Core, Ragnarok Odyssey etc etc

None of them are on PC. By just sticking with PC, I limit my choice way too much for my comfort. I don't care about AAA titles.
