If the thread tools are available one can merely edit the title to say "thread closed" No need for a Mod to spend time doing it.

It is a simple check box, takes all of 3 seconds to do it Not trying to kill all of your thoughts, just trying to help with information.

To your edit: With the edit feature, you could simply write edited out, snip, ..., and still remove what others have quoted after said post. Edit and deletion can have the same effect.

Is this problem wide spread? If there are problem members, why not deal with them and leave the good members alone.

Do not know the depth of the issue, but again W1zzard saw a need for change. Who knows, he may completely reverse his decision from the feedback.

Also there is a good reason behind all of this. This is to help stop members from going back and essentially destroying threads removing posts, breaking the thread in some instances, or causing confusion from doing so.

quote text stays unchanged even if op is edited. an example here. look for word "suggested" in quotation and in op. in op i have edited spelling error i've found (and left tons of others i didnt found then) but in quotation it is as it was written first time.
those who interested so much from tracking down old threads can look in quotations too (i have done it few times it isnt that hard) for rest it just doesnt matter.

Was there issues with people and editing and/or deleting their own posts?

A user decided he wanted to quit the forums and started deleting hundreds of his own posts, breaking thread reading flow in the process.

You've always been able to do that, it's a nice method to contact the mods about your own content ie. "can i post this?", "is this the right forum?", "please delete" etc

that I can edit my original post to add names, old driver links, more pictures, etc... to that thread.

so far the majority of cases seem to be if you are the thread starter and would like to edit the first post in the thread. I could write an addon that adds a separate timeout for the first post in a thread (1 week?). Would that help?

I think in the instance of clubs, they would almost need an indefinite ability to edit them.

I'm not sure that a week would do much good on a "club" forum thread to be honest. Some of the "club" forum thread starters edit the original post for months and even years later.

I certainly understand where your coming from having an upset member start deleting his or her posts and creating a break in the reading flow. However, has this been an issue with several cases or is this just a single occurrence? If this has happened several times then I certainly understand your decision in the matter but if its just a single occurrence then I'm not sure if the decision is warranted.

make so that deleting post after more then 2 days to leave the post with message like this
text in green box says "post deleted by [username]"

Perhaps mass/multiple deletions could just be flagged to a Mod for approval.

Ah, but Wizz's concern is not that an edit can mask as a delete, it was that mass deleting broke threads. An edit completely deleting everything requires something to be left behind as an edit.

Another thing I just noticed, is if you highlight a part of someones post, it used to pop up the "reply" button in order to just quote that part. Here is an example from @Ahhzz post above this one:

I had to quote the entire post and manually back space to delete the part I didn't want. Its all fine and dandy if, like the post above, is a small post but if someone has a sentence in the middle of a paragraph it would be a big PITA in my opinion.

I edit the Kreij Memorial thread (see sig) to update the title, the OP, and the 2nd post frequently with updates and additional info.

I also do the same for our WCG Challenge threads to update information in them.

There are more examples also..

If this is to be permanent is there a chance that we can have certain posts available to edit on a case by case basis..... Please?

This is a very good example.

Additionally, for those that do giveaways, it can pose a problem with updating their OPs as the giveaway progresses. I tend to end up editing all the while

To add on to this, I edit the title of game giveaways I do so that people can immediately see in the headlines "WINNER!"

I am doing a F.E.A.R bundle giveaway which started almost a week ago. I am getting ready to announce the winner and cannot edit the original post to include the winners name.
