I still strongly believe in the following: (and I realise these views aren't compatible with the opinions of the *most active* members of this forum) so I've chosen to take a back-seat. From now on.

GPU Overclocking
-Current overclocking & voltage controls are adequate for mainstream users, but Enthusiasts want more!

-I believe we should be able to tweak unlocked BIOS's on Nvidia GPU's, (same way we can buy an unlocked 'K' series CPU from intel & pair with an enthusiast motherboard)

-I understand its more complicated with GPU's than CPU's. But I still believe we should have more flexibility. Nvidia locks down harder and harder with every new generation.

-There must be some, more amicable answers out there to make it easier for the 'average joe' to break through and at least compete in the same league as the elite who have untold access to unlimited hardware and engineering/electrical experience to draw from.

-I'm not saying for a minute that manufacturers should pay out on warranty cover when we fry a card, but I do think there should be more flexibility with BIOS tweaks and voltage for those just 'starting out' with 'extreme cooling'.

-If CPU's were all locked down the same way GPU's were.. the sport at hwbot would be reserved soley for those with the knowledge with a soldering iron and micro-electronics, or the rich.

----

Kind of lost the passion for it a bit.

After what happened on my poll at the Nvidia section last week. My intensions got misunderstood and when shit hit the fan, I found out all my threads weren't what I thought they were, either. Which wasn't pleasant.

In my poll, people thought I wanted the manufacturer to pay for us to do what the hell we wanted, when actually I was trying to come up with a solution to "help" the manufacturer give us the freedom we want without costing them.

Before that. I was really enjoying experimenting and trying new things (even some things people haven't maybe done before/or seen for a while at tech-power up).

So to answer your question, no.. probably not... I might still do a bit benching now/again or even join a competition at hwbot at some time down the road, but for the time being -- I'd just like to get back things back to how they used to be, maybe enjoy some gaming again.

/\ sorry for the edit, finished what I wanted to say, properly now..... :) (no more edits).

No pain, no gain. I like to abuse my hardware, but I'm relatively careful.

BTW - parts of the socket look cooked!

The Asrock board is junk. I killed 2 of them on my chiller with an 8320 @ 5.6
Their A/D hybrid VRM is overrated.
It would seem their Extreme 4 990FX is built tougher

But yeah, if your board sags .1V like that...it's probably time to get something better... CHV or sabertooth are solid.
The 970 Pro Gaming/Aura is pretty good too and cheap. Ran my 8150 @ 5.65GHz with 1.7V on dice without a hitch.

Need a little help guys.

Everything working fine before.

But just upgraded my mothetboard.

Now my bootable hard drive (C:\) isnt recognised as a bootable device anymore.

My new board has more sata ports.
I've tried connecting to each and every one.

-Always detected successfully in BIOS.
-It is selected as the "boost 1st device".

I'm on Windows 10.
Upgraded free from my Windows 8.1 purchase from the Windows Store.

I could use another PC to download 8.1 onto a bootable USB from Windows Store.

But I don't really fancy risking corrupting my drive by recovering windows 10 from an 8.1 bootable USB stick.

I assume it's maybe got something to do with different sata drivers on the Extreme9?

Any ideas.?

Old board: FX Killer. (Both AMD AM3+ boards.)

Only thing swapped is mobo.

Thanks so much!! :)

Nick

what are your Sata options ACHI, and raid? Have you tried only the boot drive? Do you have a copy of Windows 7 64 bit, might do better? Over clocking on a OS will beat it up(so at least make a copy first) you may have corrupted you C drive, try booting to repair mood.

Managed to get a copy of Windows 10 downloaded from Microsoft onto a USB.
Waiting on that now downstairs.

I'll check the default achi and sata options and post back shortly.

P.s.
Am quite sure if i reconnected the old mobo windows would boot no probs.

Thanks

Might have something to do with the GPT partition on the drive as I recently had similar issues with a drive not being seen.
Check you have the latest BIOS on the Motherboard and it is in UEFI mode not legacy.

Right, something weird just happened.

Before I even got a chance to use the new Win10 USB I just created, PC just booted perfectly. (And now boots every time).

I was curious about @Caring1 idea, as I have that option under CSM (Compatibility Support Module) Legacy or UEFI (see 1st pic below)

Legacy / UEFI option
boot (CSM - Compatability Support Module).jpg

So I tried them both, switched between both options twice.. and it's still booting. Either way.

-I'm starting to remember this happening to me last year when I replaced my 3TB HDD.
-It's like the drives have to be connected into the same SATA ports (by number) they were connected to before:

I.E (in this instance with change of mobo):

FX KILLER
SATA_1 - Samsung SSD 850 Evo
SATA_2 - OCZ-VERTEX4
SATA_3 - N/A
SATA_4 - WDC 3TB

Extreme9
SATA_1 - Samsung SSD 850 Evo
SATA_2 - OCZ-VERTEX4
SATA_3 - N/A
SATA_4 - WDC 3TB

It was trial & error until i got them into the same port numbers.

No idea why. But if I disconnect the OCZ-VERTEX4 (even though its not bootable) and practically empty. The whole system fails to boot.

Very odd.

I don't have RAID.

Anyway regarding the new motherboard.

(Updated)

For stock 'prime95' on old mobo (ASROCK 990FX Killer, 8+2) I've always needed 1.33v

On my new mobo (ASROCK 990FX EXTREME9, 12+2) at stock (4.0 ghz), I only need 1.21v

North Bridge is prime95 stable at 2800 mhz ++.
Couldn't even boot past 2600 before.

My 2133 mhz rated DDR3, will O/C to nearly 2400 just by upping voltage by 50mv & changing timings from 12 to 13. (and is prime95 stable).

Old board wouldn't even boot past 2133 at max voltage + highest timings board would allow.

And solid:
5 ghz on core at 50mv less than I needed for 4.7GHZ on old mobo.

I'm stunned.

Amazed at the difference a mobo can make. I used to think I'd "lost the silicon lottery" e.t.c. e.t.c.....

p.s
my old board never even got bad reviews from the press
