I mean, from enthusiast perspective, we don't need box coolers at all and we shop online so large shiny box does nothing to sway us marketing wise.
Basic user won't buy procesor anyway these days as phones and laptops completely replaced everyday use PCs, so there doesn't need to be large box or box cooler for this either.

To me the most surprising thing is that Intel and Amd is still packaging it like that, despite absolutely no benefit and only adding costs to them, the fact that some government body has to push them to it seems a bit laughable to me, on the other hand it can show that for large companies like this, the added cost of packaging/accessories means nothing to them and efforts to reduce environmental impact is done more for marketing than practical purposes and it should be the other way around imo.

I think it's good for CPUs that ship without cooler. My 5800X3D came in a box that would fit an orb cooler and yet inside was just a paper to fill out the rest of the box and CPU in tray took about 1/10 of the real estate. New directive would help reduce cost on packaging and shipping (more units fit into container) and if they design the boxes right it should work without any problems for the consumer.

If your upgrade cycle is low for things like gadgets that require a power brick not including one is worse waste wise As you need to Buy a new one that is up to the new standards which needs to be shipped and sold on its own.

Unless you are using one of those Chinese phones with super high-speed charging and you really want to go from 0 to 100 % in 36 min, if you bought a USB-C 30watts charger like 7 years ago you are still fine. The best-selling phones are not using +100 w chargers.

And third-party power bricks were already being shipped across the world when phones were bundled with bundled with one. They've always been readily available in physical stores, and it's not like you could realistically forbid them from being manufactured . That would have been an even worse decision, making it unnecessarily harder to replace a faulty/lost power brick, or preventing the creation of convenience like a power station.

As others have pointed out a cooler is not packaging, so this law would not apply, so this "news" (hint: if it contains "could" it's not news, it's a rumour) is just regurgitated right-wing anti-EU FUD that an actually competent editor would never have allowed to be posted - let alone post themselves.

I would say "be better", but given the TPU "news" section's continual slide towards clickbait journalism and posting unverified rumours from extremely questionable sources, I think it's pretty clear there's no desire to be better.

I bought Ryzen 7600X (new), ryzen 3 3100 (second hand in box), 5800x (new), 5800x (new), 5800X (new) in those boxes. The packaging is not that huge. It is hte only sensible way to transport those boxes. Packaging is needed to not bend AM4 pins and to not damage the processor. ESD and mechanical stress is my concern.

The 3700x which i got from a work collegue in not the proper box was not to my liking.

I think the EU should focus on more important tasks.

I have send back several times online ordered M2 NVME because it was mechanically damaged the product box by the official austrian post office courier. Very small packaging. Monitors and big speakers because the transport box was too small. Packaging has a purpose. Those EU guys needs more work practise in logistics because they can decide on certain things. Sorry - but they are not educated enough.

It hurts me when I get a new SAMSUNG M2 NVME for 200€, lots of money, to see the packaging mechanical ruined. Like a dog has bitten in it several times. Packaging has a purpose. You can reuse it. Most of the packaging is paper. We have good paper recycling at least in central europe.

You can't bother the oligarchs. If you even dare to taxe 10 million from the 200 millions that they make in one year, they will move to another country. And complain about you are being unfair to them. And oligarchs happen to be very friendly with politicians. Politics is a few people trying to do their jobs, while having to deal with tantrums from the corrupts one.

Tray processors (and enterprise SSDs and server CPUs for example) are not intended for retail. If they get there, it's through random and irregular supply channels, with worse availability and questionable warranty. That's why they are sometimes more expensive (but also surprisingly cheap at times).

It doesn't have to be huge, just more robust. Phones and other everyday electronics are now often using recycled hard thick cardboard.
And many of the EU retailers that I'm shopping from like to go overkill on the shipping packaging : order an SSD from them, and they will ship it in a 12 liters box filled with paper. It seems that this part isn't concerned by the regulation. The worst exemple was when I ordered a portable 15'6 screen. It was in a hard carboard box, who was into a bigger cardboard who was into an even bigger cardbox probably around 70 liters.

Amazon is the only retailer that I know who's being cheap on that aspect. If they don't use a small box, they will just ship it in the product box. If the retailers are doing their jobs right, and hardcarbox becomes the norms for anything fragile, this can work, with the benefits of making the shipping packaging smaller. I'm glad that wasn't on an Island when I ordered that screen, because a 70 liter box would have costed me so much in shipping. It might contribute to lower the living cost of people who rely a lot on oversea importation. The price in physical stores is often very close from the total that one would pay with the shipping oversea.

Ditch the coolers and overly huge plastic parts, go with recycled/bio-friendly cardboard....easier to make, easier to ship/store, easier to dispose of, reduce costs/prices...

When I bought my 7600X, I had no problem with it having no boxed cooler. The fact that my Dark Rock 3 had no AM4/5 mounts was a bit of an issue, but next day shipping of a NH-D15 (gen1) fixed it, and I'm sure Noctua would be happy to deliver standalone mounting for AM6/LGA 19xx cooler when the time comes, especially since I live a very flat Hungary away from them

It's the same on the Balkans. Tray version of the same CPU is equal or more expensive.
