I seem to recall the batteries began to fail after about 5 years in my Zelda 1 and 2 games, at which point it became impossible to save game progress. Always thought the gold colored cartridges were cool, but much of that paint wore off from so much abuse.

You could probably do a pretty good rattle can resto job.

The world needs of very skilled psychiatric invasion to cure us of profiteering madness and other deviations.
Or we should just let hardworking people collect whatever the heck they feel like: they've earned the money, who are we to say what they do with it? Supply and demand made this price.

Exactly. If a many times over millionaire or billionaire wants to drop a dime they're going to do it. Why get bent out of shape over someone elses spending habits? Its a waste of energy.
Personally i enjoy reading the variety of responses but honestly, its just money in the end.
Do you or i check with the pc police before we buy an overpriced computer component to complete that retro rig we've been pining for? Nope, not even once. We could care less what the normies think about our nerdy purchase.

You can always do a coin cell mod to the cartridge.
Unsolder a CMOS battery holder from a dead board, insulate it and solder some wires to it and the battery connection points in the cartridge.
That way changing a dead battery is no longer a problem and it is the same as what's used in a PC. You'd need the tool to get the special screws out but those are cheap and easy to get on fleabay, got one of each size and they work fine.

This just isn't true in this case. This is a handful of people both outside and inside the collecting/auction/rating business actively being fraudulent.

Yep, stumbled upon that video a few days ago.
With all the "record-breaking" retro game auction news of recent I was getting very suspicious, but after vids from Karl Jobst, Pat the NES Punk, and few others it finally started to make sense.
Supply and demand made this price.
THIS price has nothing to do with supply and demand. It was made[-up] as a result of a conspiracy between "grading agency" and an auction house.
It has nothing to do with collecting or supply/demand, but has everything to do with creating hype and luring rich investors into a very-very unfamiliar territory.
Key word is "investors", not "collectors".

So you can find equal grade ones cheaper? That's all I need to agree with you.
