So I'm well aware that gaming laptops are doomed to forever have inferior cooling. However with mine, which I just bought pre-owned, can't handle basic games without the GPU (rtx2060 model) hitting 90c and throttling my frames. This obviously seems less than normal.

I've fiddled with the fans, I've undervolted the CPU, undervolted/underclocked the card, messed with the power plan settings. The games run just fine, silky 60fps for about 5 minutes until the GPU hits 90c and boom, throttled and the frames go haywire.

I'm guessing the problem is internal, but before I send this thing back to cex to ask for a repair, anything else I should try?

you can try opening it up, repasting and making sure the cooler is mounted back on correctly but i dont know if doing that will void your warranty.

If youre happy enough with the laptop and willing to take the risk then go ahead. I would use Noctua NT-H2, Prolimatech PK-3 or Gelid GC-Extreme - They are a bit more pricey compared to a lot of other pastes but they are less likely to suffer from a thing called 'pump out'

if you are tech savvy enough to undertake the work. Either find a friend or repair shop that can or send it back to CEX.

Better not repaste it until you are sure it doesn't void the warranty

read the op again

you can find a how-too here on how to remove the cooler and re-apply thermal paste

take care not to tear or destroy the thermal pads

if you are feeling adventurous you can use lquid metal with some proper prep work
