Yeah but still, VR on a phone, of course its not ready
Yhea we are never going to get "hardcore gaming" VR like with the rift or the vive on a smartphone, but I don't think that google is dub enough to try to sell that (the razer phone isn't even Daydream certified). VR on smartphone is more about casual entertainement, or shopping. (virtual visit of a museum, house, tv show...) Having to buy an oculus rift just to watch arte360 seems overkill when a cardboard would be enough for that.
I've tried the Rift, and it's freakin' awesome, but It's with mainstream content that VR will really take a big launch:

At some point standalone VR headset who don't need a phone or a pc may become the most popular hardware for VR, because it's cheap, easy to set up, and you can use it anywhere.
Most Daydream compatible smartphone aren't cheap, but I think that there is more people with a galaxy s8 willing to try out VR at a low added cost, than people willing to buy gaming hardware and an expensive headset just to see what vr is all about. (especially if they are not gamers)
