Yeah, what I don't get is, how hard is it? Just release the 9070xt at 649 with twice the perf of the 6800xt, job done. That's not even a preposterous thing to ask, actually normally a 100% perf increase after 2 generations would be kinda of a flop. And yet here we are...
I'm not sure if I said it here, or in another thread, but I suspect the purpose behind the delayed launch is to pit the 9070 XT against the 5070 at launch price, essentially denying Nvidia the chance for any last minute price adjustments before reviews drop. Sure, prices can always be adjusted, but reviews will be watched/read long after release date.

That's a loser mentality. Release a fast product at a reasonable price and that's it. If nvidia wanted to they would have already kicked amd out of the market, it doesn't even make sense to try to do anything about it. 5090 - 900$ msrp - 5080 = 500$ msrp, there you go, amd is now back to consoles. So in what universe does nvidia care about competing with AMD in the gpu market? They don't even know who amd is.

What mentality do you expect with 10% market share? You can't just walk into the show guns blazing and expect a hit against Nvidia, can you?

That is exactly what AMD is trying to avoid in my opinion.

Think about it... let's say they released the 9070 XT now at x USD. The guys at Nvidia could watch the reviews and adjust prices accordingly. Then, in March, every review would praise the 5070 for being such a good value card, while everybody would have long forgotten about the 9070 XT.

On the other hand, if you wait, don't disclose anything, and let the 9070 XT release at the same time as the 5070, then the 9070 will take the value crown, while the 5070 will go down in reviews as an overpriced piece of turd. Sure, it'll be successful regardless, because Nvidia is Nvidia (I'll say no more), but those bad reviews of the 5070 might sway a couple more people towards the 9070 XT.

Edit: Like you yourself just said, there would be no point in trying to play one-hit-wonder against a much stronger opponent. No, this is a tactical game, you have to wait for them to make a mistake.

So in what universe does nvidia care about competing with AMD in the gpu market? They don't even know who amd is.
It's not about Nvidia. It's about AMD playing poker and not showing their cards ahead of time.

The goal is not to defeat Nvidia, but to claw back some market share, remember? Why would they not use every opportunity they get?

How long until we see a "Blackwell" successor (at the lower end) with neural rendering knocking at the door? I would certainly like to see a benchmark across the current (soon to be) class of cards. I was going to say it would be interesting seeing rendering personality rather than walled gardens, but I'm not so sure (like playing with the visual settings on your TV (Tom Cruise)):

This might factor into my purchasing something along the lines of a 5070 priced card, to tide me over. Blessed be thy backlog

I don't think nvidia would reduce prices a week before launch. Especially as a reaction to amd? Not gonna happen. But even if they do how much do you think they would drop the price? 10$? 20$? 50 tops? Problem is amd is trying to extract the maximum amount of milk, flying too close to the sun.

Btw they tried playing poker in the past, every single time the last few gens, they were bluffing and they got their buttocks kicked. They've been following this strategy for years now.

What week? The 5070 is launching late Feb - early March. There's plenty of time for price adjustments until then.

Why not? If it means more buyers and more profit...

If midrange Blackwell chips are as small as Ada (which I think so based on component counts), then the margins must be huge.

Problem is amd is trying to extract the maximum amount of milk, flying too close to the sun.
Do you blame them? If you worked for AMD, would you shrug them off like you are now? Would you say "f* it, let's just release it and go under if we have to"? Or would you rather think of a strategy?

They got their buttocks kicked in the past because the end product didn't live up to the hype that they themselves generated. Now, they didn't say a thing. All we've got is leaks from MLID and such.

You know what? I get it now. This makes it clear as to what all the fuss is about and the reason there's so much angst as to why AMD haven't yet released yet. People need AMD to have a product out so they can buy their Nvidia card cheaper.

Exactly, I want a competitive amd so I can buy a 5090 for cheap.

Yet, it's not in AMD's best interest to lose potential profit by bringing prices down only so that you can buy a 5090 cheaper. Nvidia isn't the only company that works for a profit. Strange, isn't it? ;)

One can complain about GPU prices all day long, but this is the mentality that got us here to begin with: people don't want to hear about buying anything other than Nvidia.

It was obviously a joke, i cannot reply seriously to that kind of jibberish. Wanting a competitive amd to buy Nvidia for cheaper is one of the silliest things I've heard, and I've heard a lot of silly things

The only reason my 3 last cards have been nvidia is because amd wasn't even making cards at that performance bracket.

Ah I see. :)

As weird as it sounds, it's by far not the weirdest thing I've read here recently.
There was a user in one of the other 9070 XT threads not long ago who said he wished AMD went bankrupt so that "the whole world would be united in one happy green Nvidia family".
After reading such comments, I'll believe anything about people.

I don't understand why would someone actively want an nvidia card. Mentality and psychology pushes humans to root for the underdog. Rooting for the bigger company club or whatever is boring. I usually try to get out of my way to buy an amd card but it's kind hard to justify it the last few years. I'm willing to spend 2k on a gpu but amd isn't even obliging.

Regardless of what people think about RT, I just wanna use it / try it / test it / see the improvements and all that, but amd is so far behind there that it makes it unusable. Which they seem to understand and focusing on it now, but they withdrew from the high end market all together which is sad.

Also due to amd being the underdog it seems like they allow a lot more leeway with their AIBS when it comes to profit margins, resulting in better cards than the nvidia ones. As an owner of a "cheap" 4090, it sucks, usually cheap amd cards are better in terms of both power delivery, design, fans etc.. My wet dream is to buy a xx90 tier SAPPHIRE AMD card but somehow I'm an nvidia fan, lol

Competition is good regardless of the reason you desire it. If AMD has a good product out first, why would I buy the equivalent NVIDIA product?

Yeah, what I don't get is, how hard is it? Just release the 9070xt at 649 with twice the perf of the 6800xt, job done. That's not even a preposterous thing to ask, actually normally a 100% perf increase after 2 generations would be kinda of a flop. And yet here we are...
For you it is easy because it is not your business and you dont have to make the product. That goes for every company not just AMD. twice the performance for lower price? Yeah, nice fairy tale. You need to be more sane about it especially with the current pricing companies mark their products at. You may also be blocked by the advancement of nodes and their prices. Chipmaker companies need to increase the profit. Not build a product that will satisfy gen to gen performance increase so people are happy even if it costs way more than they can get. Balance is what you are after. Sometimes it is not that simple.
None of the companies is offering 100% perf increase after within two gens. Also, there are other aspects to it not just performance and that is it. You want double performance? That would mean double the size of a chip and with the new nodes (increasing prices constantly) how can you achieve what you are talking about? reasonable and balanced. Feel the market so that you know people will actually buy it.

Not long ago, I would have said that upgrading every generation is pointless.
But now, it's more like upgrading every two generations is pointless as well (yes, I'm looking at Blackwell, too), especially when you're considering a 2 gens old flagship vs a current mid-tier.

Personally, I'm still cautiously optimistic about the 9070 XT because I'm planning an upgrade from a 6750 XT.
Nvidia doesn't bother me one bit with offering only 12 GB at $550, and asking stellar amounts of money for anything more than that.
I'm not so optimistic. I'm will just kick back and wait. See what the new stuff will bring and evaluate the price etc. if I actually need it.

I think I get what you're saying here, but I also feel like you've phrased it poorly, so I'll reword it to what I think you intended and if I'm incorrect, please let me know?

I don't understand why anyone would actively want a graphics card from a particular vendor.

As a consumer all I care about is getting the features I want at the best possible price point. I literally do not care who the vendor is that's offering those features, except in regards to any desired features that are specific to said vendor.
