Good luck getting a 3090!!!

I got two 3090FTW3 from Microcenter at $1799 ($1955 with tax).

B&H sent me an email to say they had some 3090 Gaming X Trio MSI models in stock but they want $2200 for them.

by looking at comparison section , I can't see big different between RT On/Off. right now I played demo version and works well with RX480.

The reflections on the stone floor look better with RTX on in the one picture but in other pictures (like the one with the beer bottles or the water) it looks worse.

It's a large performance hit for a feature may or many not look better depending on who you ask.

Have a look at the 6GB 5600 XT vs 8GB 5700 XT in this game: Since 1080p VRAM usage fits in the 5600 XT's 6GB buffer, 1440p VRAM usage just barely fits, while 4K VRAM "only" fits in the 5700 XT's buffer, you'd expect the performance to tank on the 5600 XT at 4K:

1080p - 27.6% faster 5700 XT
1440p - 26.3% faster
4K - 24.4% faster

Doesn't look like the "shortage" of VRAM hindered the 5600 XT much.

And the 4GB 5500 XT got 76fps at 1080p. Why would someone think that sucks?

Main system memory is used when you run out of VRAM. It only becomes an issue when either A) you run out of system memory B) frequently used game data is swapped out to the main system memory due to lack of VRAM and the game has to constantly fetch from the RAM.

It's going to vary a lot from game to game and based on how much system memory you have.

I purchased a 3090 because I was unable to find a 6900xt in stock. Wish I could have gotten my hands on a 6900xt.

Cause when Vram maxes out, performance becomes a stuttery mess, regardless of high frame rates, the reason for that is the game start using system memory, which is slower than GDDR video memory, that might cause stuttering issues in games and frequent crashes

RT screenshots look almost if they are in the wrong side. I guess the implementation is really bad, the only good one is with the floor reflections.
I'm pretty sure some of them are on the wrong side as sliding across to RT Off actually makes the picture worse when that should be an improvement.

Glad my RX Vega 64 shows great 1440P performance! I am sure I could ether live with the 45fps for 4K or tweak a couple settings to achieve 60fps.

Nice to see companies making games playable and still beautiful on even older hardware. I respect that a lot. So many companies keep pushing the edge of performance, and it really ends up hurting the experience imo cause I'd rather have high frame rate.

Hell yeah :) I was shocked when i got constant stable 59 60 fps with 1060 6gb i7 4770k 2x8ram. I was expecting mid 30-40s . And looks beautiful.

And @W1zzard thanks for answer. Awesome benchs as always.

Me too. I still don't think RT is a visual changer, it's just like a small difference in lighting setting, little bit darker here, little bit lighter there, and barely noticeable.

Minecraft is still the prime example of how RT should be implemented. Maybe RT is more suitable for game with simple graphic or games that originally don't have impressive graphic.

it’s not “highest” setting if you conviently leave RT off. Either have everything turned on or it should not be called as such. Period.

I think my language is clear enough? Also "everything turned on" = fail like Guru3D. You don't want variable rate shading on, because it looks very bad

"at the highest settings with raytracing disabled" (screenshot page)
"at the highest settings in 2560x1600." (on the RT page)
"game's memory usage at the highest setting." (VRAM usage, showing both RT on and off)
"Highest, RT off" (charts with rt off)
"Highest, RT on" (charts with rt on)
"Highest Settings, RT off" (FPS Analysis)

RT reflections look worse than SSR
No RT shadows, even though there are plenty of performance headroom left, and lots of enclosed area do benefit from RT shadows
RTGI looks less believable than rasterized due to missing shadow, like this on (big guy's shadow is missing)

Yeah 8hours gameplay and current gen graphics, 60 bucks is a bit much.

Is this game 10K or something? What kind of a graphic is that? It looks powerful.

No plans for that, don't have an UW monitor, too niche to justify buying one (and the physical space). and testing time. Shouldn't you be able to roughly interpolate the numbers based on 1440p/4K ?

Maybe it's just me, but what's the point of making glorified movies in the age of streaming?

As usual the most apparent RT is the refection on the floor etc.

Which should still be there without RT. Screen-space reflections can look exactly the same when it comes to objects visible on screen, and at higher performance. The only benefit RT brings is reflecting objects that are off screen, which is not the case here.

This is a terrible implementation of RT. In most of the comparisons shown, RT on actually looks worse. And where it looks better (reflections), it should look the same as RT off.

But overall this game looks really good, especially considering the amazing performance across all GPUs.

According to W1zzard he said it took him 10 hours to complete but he felt extremely well entertained during those hours. I would much rather have 10 hours of that than 15 or 20 hours of mediocre gaming filled with filler material just to stretch the game length out.

If you wait for maybe a year then you can probably pick it up for $30 to $40 on a good Steam Sale.

Some of the ON/OFF look better OFF.

Raytracing CAN be nice but the fps hit is too big to make it worth using for pretty much anyone using 120 Hz or more. DLSS is required and AMD needs this feature badly, especially when their RT performance is much worse than Nvidias.

Good luck getting a 3090!!!

Why would I, had my 3080 for 8 months or so, paid 700 dollars

It will last till 2H 2022 when new cards release

3090 is pointless for gaming, you are paying twice the price for 10% performance over 3080

3080 Ti will deliver same perf as 3090 in gaming, getting a 3090 now is waste of money, this is why Nvidia waited and delayed 3080 Ti several times, when it hits, 3090 will be pointless for 99% of people.

3090 is the worst card ever in terms of value, worse than 2080 Ti which held the crown before 3090

Yeah, if you're unsure, wait for a sale. What I forgot to mention is that sometimes the movement speed felt a bit slow, maybe 20% too slow, possibly in an attempt to prolong playtime. But Resident Evil is generally slow movement. Cheat Engine Speed Hack helps, but desyncs the cutscene audio ;)

Steam usually have regional pricing that make 60usd games 40usd in my country, however RE8 and Outriders are 60usd flat.
10h playtime is like 1/3 of CP2077's main storyline and CP2077 only cost 40usd here LOL, so yeah hard pass here, maybe I will pick RE8 up when it's 20usd.

W1z's conclusion said it all, RT is the future, just not in this game. Total afterthought and a detriment to the games visual style and presentation.

Fuels the thoughts that it is a gimmick, which is a shame, because the hardware is so young and versatile and there is so much visually and performance wise yet to be squeezed out of the hardware that is already in gamers hands. Just look at the gains in performance and visuals between release and now with Metro Exodus.
