RM750x (2021) enough for my 5800X3D + 7900XT system?

Just managed to snag a Sapphire Pulse 7900XT on sale here and my 4070 is in pretty good condition so I should be able to make a decent buck back on that.

I checked on outervisions' PSU calculator and they were saying I should have heaps of headroom, even with a bunch of USB devices running, light strips, and 4 case fans.

I'm excited to put it into my system, which uses a year-old RM750X from Corsair. 80+ gold, highly reviewed, was A tier last I checked.

Anyway, that being said, I'm not sure what to trust. Outervision's calculator is accurate but doesn't account for load spikes, and I'd rather just return the 7900XT in box if it's going to be banging over my power limits all the time. I have a big and well ventilated case too.

R7 5800X3D, 32GB DDR4-3200, B550-A Strix, 2 NVME drives, 2 monitors, 6 case fans running relatively slowly, a couple of corsair ARGB light strips & some external USB devices. The calculator threw out some max load wattage at around 568 watts.

should be good, would avoid overclocking and maybe do a little undervolting of gpu if you want little more headroom.

I definitely won't be overclocking over the stock settings. Do I really need to be undervolting it for that headroom? How much are we walking about? I'm more worried about the spikes, when it sticks to its typical TDP it won't cause any problem for my 750x

You'll be fine. Your system is going to pull no more than 450W at peak synthetic CPU+GPU combined testing, and that's almost impossible to replicate with real-world use which will likely be closer to 375W when gaming.

Yeah, I used the PCpartPicker build thing and it was estimating (once I put every nitty gritty detail in) that it would have a maximum total system draw of 610 watts, which is still far below what the 750x should ever have a problem with, even if there is a bit of a wattage spike.

Then again, I could be wrong, but with the protections on those RMX power supplies I'd just get system shutoffs at which point it's time to fit a new power supply I guess.

yeah, RDNA2 and 30-series high-end cards were very spiky with both the 3090 and 6950XT spiking hard enough to trip the OCP on some models. I think both manufacturers have learned to reign in those transient spikes a bit.

7900XT looks reasonable, tbh

except there is a big difference between this unit and some "crappy" one when getting at max output.
i never had trouble using +700w during oc (testing) on a solid 650w unit, so unless its continuous draw,
shouldn't be an issue.

Yeah, one of the many reasons I've been a convert to the RMx line for years now.

@jonnyGURU (John Gerow) works for Corsair and has done for years.

That's one reason I buy Corsair PSUs. I don't know how much say he has in production quality/design but it's been a while since I saw any bad press about a Corsair PSU. Even their lowest-tier VS line are acceptable, compared to a lot of the other shit sold at that tier/price, not that I'd use one for a machine pushing more than a low-end dGPU.

The other reason is modular cable compatibility. Corsair Type3/Type4/Type5 pinouts for their PSUs are easy to find, and there's a lot of compatibility between PSUs too.

Agree. Still butchering one of 450 W ones with an R9 290. Keeps me wondering what will die first (I don't mind this rig exploding, it's ancient, doesn't contain any data I care for and is sub 120 USD).

OP, you'll be fine. Undervolting is almost a must because you can get more speed at the same wattage. Don't forget that daisy chain is a no go, you should use separate 12V lines.

Plug everything correctly, don't abuse the GPU, keep games at reasonable settings and framerates, and your GPU and PSU will last literally decades (unless defective).

mmmh, TX comes to mind, but true, its a 2013 unit.
i would never recommend any CX/GS units for more than igpu stuff.
and i saw reviews showing the 2012 VS to be potentially "dangerous",
and im not up to date if they changed anything on units you can buy now.

I didn't find a way to destroy a CX650M with my RX 6700 XT + i9-11900 non-K. These units are not ideal but they are good for their price.

Yeah, you have to go back a long time. I can't say when he joined Corsair but I suspect the removal or revising of bad units from the lineup was at least partly his doing. That was his bread+butter, after all, and it would make a lot of sense that he'd go into QC and design at Corsair.

If @crmaris over at Hardwarebusters revealed he'd been working at Thermaltake for the last 5 years, for example, I'd re-evaluate my preconceptions on Thermaltake PSUs too.

been a while since corsair had a GS line but those CX in their last version (non modular and skip the earlier versions) were some of the best value PSU around and if you managed to grab a vengeance version even better

I'd re-evaluate my preconceptions on Thermaltake PSUs too.
they have been working CWT to release some pretty good PSU lately that were well reviewed by Aris. They have come a good ways from the junk they used to put out, not that everything they have is great or that they couldn't turn around and change parts or go go back to their junk

which will likely be closer to 375W when gaming.
but then you would only have 375w of "headroom" you know in case you wanted to OC your GPU & CPU and jerry rig an xbox to it

I see zero problems with this.
I run an Antec 750W that has powered this stamped steel coffin from Phenom II X4 955, FX-8370 and now R5 3600.
It currently mains:
ASUS X570 TUF, 64GB DDR4-3200, RX 580 Red Devil (Switching to 7900XT today), SolarFlare SFN5122F, USB headers
3x120mm fans at half speed, a pump, some 80mm fans
Limited storage (nvme+sata)

I could probably get away with switching out the SolarFlare for the Hellhound but that might go over the power budget.
You don't have anything spectacular to worry about outside of the 7900XT, which makes this painlessly easy. I'm juggling PCI-E lanes.

R7 5800X3D, 32GB DDR4-3200, B550-A Strix, 2 NVME drives, 2 monitors, 6 case fans running relatively slowly, a couple of corsair ARGB light strips & some external USB devices. The calculator threw out some max load wattage at around 568 watts.
Running a 5900X + 7900XTX here on a 750W HX750i.
For gaming the 5900X averages about 100-105W and 7900XTX has a power limit (by me) at 390W. Avg GPU TBP depends on game and gameplay, but it’s around 330-350W (CP2077 for example).

Total system avg PSU power output is usually around 500-520W with peak output at 600-610W.
