I.have 64GB of ram running at tight timings on gear 2 and when I try gear 1 I only gain 2ns better latency and a but more bandwidth, and BSOD at stock.settings.
The gear setting lowers the infinity fabric, which slows it down.
(I forgot what the infinify fabrics called on AM5, in zentimings)

2000 IF for DDR5 6000 is the 'sweet spot'
you could change to
1500 IF for DDR5 8000

And while in theory the maximum bandwidth is higher with the RAM, now that the IF is clocked lower latency will increase.
You're getting BSOD's because you've probably got too low of a voltage for one of these settings, with SoC being the usual troublemaker... but you failed to mention any of these speeds or voltages.

Hi Everyone.
I finally managed to fix the crashing and restarts. The problem what i was experiencing started at random times over the last couple of months. It slowly got worse over the last couple of weeks crashing on the desktop every single bootup into windows. Eliminating the fault wasn't easy as the Event viewer only recognised the crash state not the device, which made it harder. Anyway I found it was my Creative ZXR soundcard causing the issue which was plugged into the PCIEX 16_3 slot . I didn't have much choice to put it there because my graphics card is massive covering the other slots. I have upgraded the soundcard now to the Creative AX-7 and had no more issues. I can consentrate on the bios setting more now giving them fine tweaks and once i find an increase in performance i will show everyone my findings as a baseline for you to work off if you want to. cheers

That's definitely unusual.
I'd say it may be PCI-E error related on the chipset, except you've used another soundcard in the same location.

The issue has gone. It was the creative card causing it. When i get time i will check the card in another pc and if faulty i will get it under the microscope to try and work out what went wrong. cheers

Hi Everyone. It has been a while since the last update, but i can confirm the Creative ZXR soundcard was causing the crashes as i have not had any further issues.

There is another Update:

BIOS
ROG STRIX X670E-E GAMING WIFI BIOS 1709
Version 1709
11.21 MB 2023/10/12
1.Update AGESA version to Combo AM5 PI 1.0.8.0 to support upcoming CPU
Before running the USB BIOS Flashback tool, please rename the BIOS file (SX670EE.CAP) using BIOSRenamer.

Asus has begun to drop BIOS updates for its AMD AM5 motherboards featuring Team Red's latest AGESA microcode update, version PI 1.0.8.0. According to Asus, the new microcode patch supports "upcoming" CPUs

Upcoming Ryzen 7000 Phoenix APUs

I will update the bios and test it out as it is always a good idea to keep up to date with Combo AM5 PI 1.0.8.0. I cannot see any other information anywhere about this update to see if this revision resolves any problems .
I will let you all know if there are any problems etc.
cheers

Just a note on updating to ROG STRIX X670E-E GAMING WIFI BIOS 1709.
Any saved profiles from previous bioses won't load on this version. It will cause the bios to crash.
Print out a copy of the profile so you can manually enter the settings.
I will let you know if i get any further issues.
cheers

Cannot confirm, i updated to 1709 and loaded my overclocked settings. CPU + Memory. Works like a charm.

You're not meant to do that - never, ever use old bios profiles on a new BIOS.

The entries get moved around, so it could read "cpu 1.40v' on an older bios as 140v on the new one, which is why it's erased/blocked when you update.

I went in and did it all manual. To be honest there isn't many settings to change now other than a few tweaks. Cheers

Definitely not a good idea, i'm surprised it even allows you to do that.

Are you saving them to a USB drive or something? Because the internally saved ones are erased for this reason

Perhaps don't import them to newer BIOSes.

Even if they're internally aware, you could be undoing half the reason the update exists - lets say they update the automatic timings with XMP/EXPO, your profile may continue to force the older ones rather than the newer ones.

I decided to go back to BIOS 1602 as i was getting restarts with my setup. The error goes away with 1620. I will wait until the next one to see if it fixes the issue. The settings in the bios were done manually so it wasn't anything to do with the previous profiles. cheers

Hi All.
Since i last posted last i did have some issues with stability with the latest Bios, but after changing some settings and tweaks i have got a stable and good performance from my rig. I am going to paste my current settings for the latest bios as it may help someone. As with all new bioses there are some changes to the layout so i do not advise using any older profiles as they will crash your system.

Hi. It was mostly memory settings causing issues, so i tweaked them and everything seems good now.

Did the SoC voltage issues actually put strain on the Motherboard?
Hi all.
I have been doing some testing and found an issue with the MB I purchased last year. I had an intemittent crash when putting the system under stress using Cinebench R23 which has progressed to the stage i am replacing it for a new one. With the new MB i have had no issues at all and it ran for one hour on cinebench scoring 37844 with the 7950X. The older MB was lucky to even reach 36000 and that would be if it didn't crash. I spent some time ironing this issue out checking each piece of hardware. I cannot say that every MB purchased and used before the fix will potentally break, but it does make you wonder if your MB will fail due to the SOC Voltage exceeding the 1.3v previously. In earlier posts i can recall my Soc voltage exeeding 1.490 Volts with the older MB and crashes even after the bios updates which were supposed to fix Memory and other little tweaks, but i think the damage was done and for saying the strix was an high end MB it has damaged the voltage regulators somewhere on the board which feeds the CPU. I have RMA'd the older motherboard now so hopefully all will be ok. Just keep an eye on your MB and if you get strange crashes even with default settings in the Bios then check each component to rule out problems. I thought i would just mention this to you all.
Cheers
Take Care

I've got more eperience with AM5 now, ir_cow still has a few hundred hours on me tho.
SoC voltage in terms of "strain" or damage will only be on the CPU. Corrosion, damaged or dirty contacts, over-volting damage etc - it's all CPU.

Erratic instability could be any step of the way (PSU -> VRMs -> CPU), BIOS settings, temperatures, or third party interference like AM4 with PCI-E 3.0 risers causing SoC voltage drops somehow, leading to USB errors. High power draw USB devices could then cause this in reverse

In your case, it's simple: Don't clock the IF that high! I did a bunch of testing before i got sick in other threads, and found a lot of the time lower IF speeds are in fact exactly as fast. Margin of error fast.

In the long run it came out like on intels platforms where they have 100Mhz or 133Mhz base clocks for DDR5 frequencies, except it seems hidden on the AM5 boards - no idea what settings choose which value.

If your values line up well (like 2000/3000 for DDR5 6000) then things are great - but 1500/3000 could be within 0.1% of that result at much safer voltages, while every value in between ran like ass.

Hi All
It is that time again for another update.
ROG STRIX X670E-E GAMING WIFI BIOS 1904

Version 1904
11.27 MB 2024/01/30
1. Update AGESA version to Combo AM5 PI 1.1.0.2b
2. Improve system stability

Before running the USB BIOS Flashback tool, please rename the BIOS file (SX670EE.CAP) using BIOSRenamer."

I will check the new bios update out. I have noticed that any profiles saved previously don't seem to load into the updated bios since the last couple of updates. I find it so much easier to just make note of the settings and just go through each menu with the desired settings. That way you don't risk freezes in the bios.
cheers

The Latest Profile settings for RYZEN 7950X
use this guide if you want as it will be mostly the same for all processors.
I also use a custom water loop.
Memory setting may vary from different manufacturers.

The latest firmware is good to go and works well

I don't see the point in messing about with the curve settings in PBS unless you are wanting to get higher scores on cinebench etc. This scored a healthy 38262 which is not to bad.. cheers

Benchmark Scores
That's your problem. Almost guarantee it isn't stable. DDR5-4800 is the highest I've been able to go so far that passes memory tests. Now you could have a golden CPU or a shit ton of voltage to make it work. Us normals aren't getting 4x32 anytime soon on AM5
So far this is the same for me with Asus Crosshair X670E Hero.

6000+mhz memory running @pc5 44800 (5600Mhz)
Otherwise boots take far longer and the benchmark numbers start to go down. Until your absolutely familiar with the boards electrical lanes, especially around the socket...Be careful...
Im taking it easy.... Bit by bit.... I do not want to damage anything trying to get 6000mhz. Ive heard that running lower latencies in Timings with around 5500mhz is supposedly much faster than raw Mhz.
New DDR5 is on the way to prove this once and for all afaik...

New AGEAS update improves boot times. Haven't played with 128GB / 192 yet on the new one. But DDR5-8000 works nows with enough Voltage :) there is some hope for 4800+ with 4xDR
