Hi,

I have a Strix 3090 OC for a while now and the card is great but i'm always concerned by temps.

At stock profile with fan speed around 90 to 100%
The Core can goes up to 80c
memory around 86 kinda.

I have a 3840x1600 / 160Hz screen.

I've read that GDDR6X is safe untill 100c but still I'm not very comfortable with high temps and fan noise and i'm considering going on a full loop in a few months

In the meantime i've undervolted the GPU to 1860Mhz @ 0.825v, no issues so far, is this a good results. I've not really been able to benchmark if the gaming performance was really affected but what % of FPS am I Losing you think?

Thanks !

Your stock temps seem pretty high. Mine has never hit that high and that's with +46 core voltage, +90 on the core clock slider, +500 mem and power slider to the 123% for the full 480W limit. I'm usually pretty steady in the 70-72C range even after hours of gaming with a worst case peak of 74-75C on occasion with these settings. My mem temps are similar with the +500 and drop to 78-80C with no mem oc. I would be pretty worried with any long term GDDR6X temps over 95C and mildly concerned in the 90-94C range Is your power limit set at the the default 100% 390W limit or are you at the full 480W? Not sure if you're comparing loss in FPS from the 390W or from the 480W limit.

It's full stock, 100% power.
You have a strix as well?

Those temps are the max I've seen Its not in all games.
Also what resolution are you playing?

That's really not bad at all and very much in line with other GA102 (3080, 3080Ti, 3090) results. You'd be very hard-pressed to ever notice a difference in games too, only benchmarks where we chase high scores.

I run about 1830mhz at 825mv on my 3080, with +500 memory (20ghz effective), with the power limit set at 117% just so that the card never power throttles, but undervolted its rare to use more than 270w anyway.

I'm running my 3090 at the same clocks as yours, 1860mhz @ 812mV, benching Timespy at this undervolt give me 97.5% graphic score of stock Strix 3090 OC. So yeah losing 2.5% perf but cutting power consumption by 100W seems very worth it. I have played around with lots of different undervolts and found that around 1800mhz seems to be the jackpot in term of general performance and efficiency.

I am gonna try this with my MSI RTX 3090 Ventus 3x OC card to see if this helps.

I've been running an undervolt on my card for several months now and performance is for all intents and purposes exactly the same. I've not run any side-by-side comparisons, I think it's safe to say that if your card can hit its max boost frequency even at a lower voltage, your performance should be the same.
Undervolting allowed me to run a much more conservative fan curve which made my system a lot quieter. Temps stayed similar, but at a lower noise level, which was my main concern :D

Keep the core temp under 82C and you wont lose much.

I can only change Power Limit in MSI Afterburner on my Ventus card not Core voltage so how to "under" volt my GPU?

CTRL+F brings up the voltage curve. What I do is then hold CRTL and grab a point and drag the entire line down, then choose your undervolt target point, lets say its 825mv, drag that single point up to the desired speed, lets say 1830mhz and hit apply on the main MSI AB window, every point to the right of the one you applied should now be a flat line.

Stock volts are the absolute minimum companies put on their cards as a 1 size solution which reduces time to market. So some cards would do better with less volts while others are higher...

Vega is another example.

If you want stock performance with UV you need about 1900-1950MHz, depending on binning that requires anywhere from 825-900V on the 4 Amperecards I've tested.

Minimum req volt for vram to run at full speed is 725-750mv depending on bin which can be run at 1550-1700 depending on bin. 1700@750mv gives you about 90% of performance, but reduces powerconsumption by about 35-40% vs stock and temps/noise drops drasrically.

Hmm okay I might have gotten a average of 1700-1730MHz @ 875-881mV at under 355W running Heaven on repeat.

But it's still the same as stock for my Ventus 3x but the temps gone down 3c but I got 29c in my apartment so that's no joy at all :(

1700 should run fin at 775mv or maybe even lower, try that, should lower temp/consumption quite a bit. Maybe you have golden sample and can run 1700@750mv :)

Ok, try 1650@750mv or 1750@775mv?

I set 1900MHz to 875mV and it doesn't hard crash but only boosts to like 1700-1730Mhz and have temps of 81-83c.

I wish HDD's wasn't this expensive because my Fractal Design is in storage mode because I need the space for drives because 10TB drive had went up with like £115/€135 since February here and I was planing on slimming down but and replace 2x4TB with at least 1x10TB which should give better airflow to my RTX 3090 but not at does prices so I ended up with 2x4TB because one 4TB got a bad sector and is like 6-7years old.

Do you use curve editor in afterburner? Press control+f, mark one point while you hold alt, drag the whole curve down so that the point furtest right is at 1700, drag the point at 775mv to 1700 and apply, the the curve should be flat from 775mv and 1700, that should work unless you are very unlucky with bin. Check gpu-z, you get powerlimit on perf cap reason? Try raising pwrlimit to max.

Yes, I had issues getting it to work because all videos said hold ALT down.
