I am so happy with my 5600x3d, I honestly don't see myself upgrading until 9900x3d or possibly even the one that comes after that. I loving seeing 60 Celsius on both my cpu and gpu after some demanding gaming. I am a stickler for cold temps ever since my overheating gaming laptop traumatized me.

Going to get a bundle from my friend, 2700X + Asrock B450 Steel Legend + RX 5700 XT for 220EUR. I can retire my current 2500K from my 2nd rig and get quad the amount of threads there and also get some 1080p horsepower for gaming.

It's a desktop, man..........lol. 90W for idle desktop is good for a 1CCD part with a dGPU that is also idling normally. I'm at 120W usually due to my 165Hz monitors' draw.

If you're idling at about 15-20W on Package Power in HWInfo there's not a whole lot you can do, that's about normal already. You can try cutting down on extra VSOC to try and lower your idle SOC Power draw a bit, but unless we're talking major drops (ie. 1.1V down to 0.9V) you won't save much on power. You can try some other stuff like lowering your PLL (1.8V default but called different things depending on vendor), but it doesn't do a whole lot for power or anything else for that matter.

Play with SOC/Uncore OC mode (either CBS or AMD OC menu can't remember) to see if it makes a difference, usually not. Make sure C-states are enabled. etc

Eco Mode only adjusts limits. It's the same as punching in the values yourself under PPT/TDC/EDC. It makes zero difference for idle state.

There are a couple things that will for sure lower your idle power:
  • Get a slower 5700G, because the APUs idle at 5-10W. Or Intel.
  • Get rid of your dGPU lol
  • Start getting rid of fans and SATA drives
  • If your dGPU idles at above 20W, consider getting a GPU that is more efficient at idle.
  • Switch to a Rembrandt or Phoenix laptop and enjoy sub-10W idle.
I don't think those are good solutions for this problem that isn't really a problem.
One more thing for that list: Disable EXPO/XMP and run your RAM at its base frequency, which also lowers your SoC voltage and UCLK drastically. It can give you 5-10 W lower power consumption in all conditions.

I know it's an old post, but I didn't get notifications for some reason. :ohwell:

No I never did. I actually had given up, but then they announced 5600x3d, plus I had microcenter coupon to get it for 200 even after tax, and my buddy irl offered to buy my old cpu for only 20 less than what i paid for it. So it was essentially a 100 dollar bill upgrade for me to get some x3d cache, and I am a sucker for niche items, so I said wth. I have no desire to upgrade my cpu now, not until 9900x3d or maybe later now.

I did see in hwinfo my 5600x3d hit 4450 on 2 of the 6 cores, I didn't try to do that, it did it automaticallyafter I enabled my minus30, luckily no issues came from it.

Not going to lie, ever since I started doing xmp only and not tinkering with any ram oc's my life quality has improved.

I know......when I upgrade to DDR5 I will probably do the same. Too tired to do this stuff anymore.

Right now I'm just testing out the new 120A AGESA. At least in safemode memory still looks good. Unfortunately CPU performance is still deplorable (whatever fucking nuked the 5800X3D V-F table in 1207/1208 is clearly still there). Trying to compensate with Vcore offset but it's not having much effect, as expected. Probably gonna roll back to 1206 once I'm done, that marks 3 AGESA releases that are utterly not worth my time.

Side note, a friend of mine who bought 7950X3D on the $699 fire sale just up and ate the $400 cost of X670E Strix-A to jump ship to 13900K. After about a week of being in UCLK hell. I don't think 14th gen refresh has what it takes to win me over, but it sounds like I'm not the only one having doubts about AM5.

All hail the 1.2.0.6c. :D Never wanted to try the newer ones after many stories that confirm the related mess. Anyone that's been through decent RAM tweaking on AM4 know how much effort is needed and how frustrating it can get. And then the new BIOS say all of your hard work was in vain... enough of that BS (yeah, the adrenaline was the same with the saved profiles up until not so long ago). Already experienced that going from a stock BIOS my board came with, to a newer one. And then tried a few more. Each one was worse than the former, in the terms of OC stability, both the CPU and RAM.

Can't find his post anymore but what @Mussels said in some thread about needing a hefty negative Vcore offset on this AGESA was right. -30 -0.075V gets me close but not quite what I usually do on -28 no offset with 4006. That's the closest I can possibly get, the next step is -0.081V which is too much and starts killing clocks already.

I'm afraid how exactly the 5800X3D works will forever remain an enigma. Changing limits changes behaviour but it never actually listens to or sticks to limits. At same 142W -30, 0 offset is 125W+, -0.05V is 110W, and -0.10V with bad clock stretching plunges to 90W.

Almost forgot that the 4006 I always use isn't from the website, it's the reous mod. Had to go download that again. Needless to say I'm not changing BIOSes again, AMD can keep their dogshit new AGESA

edit: flashed back to 4006 and there are no surprises, right back to 15100-15200. Just not sure what exactly they did in the new firmware. It pulls similar power and similar Vcore, but temps are significantly increased and clocks are down.

Is this the first time I've ever beaten you in a benchmark ever?? lol

I'm still waiting on low profile bracket for RTX A2000, then can start re-working 5700G. Should be able to reduce VSOC now that iGPU is out of the picture, have already taken off about 0.03V. Probably will open up some FCLK headroom too. Hoping for 4600 1:1 but we'll see.

This board is weaksauce lol :D

It is really good with a 12 core though.. just not with mems

Edit:

I might give MSI a whirl..

Edit again:

Actually, I just have to RMA my XE lol..

Another Edit:

I haven't really played with it a ton.. I don't want to break it lol.. the death of my other board has me a little shook :(

oh I do, trust me ;)

I just haven't really gotten around to working with my 5700G and RAM. Both were replaced under RMA last year after my board went to the afterlife. I only set CO and put on my previous profile - all I know is that cores-wise and SOC-wise this 2022 5700G is stronger, but by how much I don't know.

I'm glad I got the A2000 for net $150cad to tide that PC over for the next little while - other option of upgrading to Phoenix later this year is just a lot of $$$ for not a lot of performance. More funds saved for STECS this year and DDR5 next year :)

I haven't really played with it a ton.. I don't want to break it lol.. the death of my other board has me a little shook :(
always need a reliable backup, brother :toast:

Exactly. I still remember when squeezing those milliseconds from SuperPI or that absolutely best 3DMark score.. :)

i know, it used to be for me too, i have several posts on this site with various ram kits i overclocked. sometimes it can turn into an addiction and you don't even know it though. i think that is what i would warn most people about, but that line is placed differently for everyone, for me, for this particular hobby, it is long in my past. xmp and away i game.

Personally RAM OC has been somewhat "meh" for me after the legendary bh-5 DDR1 chips. I just try to find the highest MHz of RAM and that's it, too lazy to fine-tune anymore.

But I still give props to people who do that as that's us PC enthusiast exist after all :)

Personally RAM OC has been somewhat "meh" for me after the legendary bh-5 DDR1 chips. I just try to find the highest MHz of RAM and that's it, too lazy to fine-tune anymore.

But I still give props to people who do that as that's us PC enthusiast exist after all :)

sounds like you just haven't found the right kits and platforms for it :)

Stuff becomes habit but I can understand why a particularly unlucky or bad experience puts new users off of AMD forever. There's so much time wasting crap now, CO and limits, X3D driver stuff for 2CCD, RAM, optimize Windows......for us picky people we can eventually appreciate that some things are more nuanced than "AMD bad" but the average user is not interested

XMP is slow :)
I just did that I put XMP-3200 then bumped up the memclock at 33MHz at a time and ran TestMem5 for hours. 3466 was the absolute max on my 32GB kit, wasn't stable even at 1.45V (as 3466 1.38V is stable).

Let's be honest, I just don't wanna pay extra for "special" RAM :D

sounds like DDR5 is for you then, you don't need to anymore :D

There's plenty of serious RAM fun to be had on the other side of the fence (APUs and Intel). iGPUs make RAM actually rewarding. Chiplets just make things doodoo

Oh hell no, upgrading the whole platform for a broke dude like me is a no-go, at least for now. I'll get a 5700X or 5800X3D later, but hell no for a whole upgrade :D
