Witch one you takes is dependent on what PCIe connection you have available. Is it PCIe 2,3 or 4? How much lanes? If you know that, you can choose with M.2 SSD you will buy.

The one installed now is PCIe 3.0, but maybe your laptop accepts PCIe 4? Check that first.

I am telling gibberish...:kookoo: The 980Pro is also PCIe 4.0, so with one you buy? You can choose in 990 or 980 Pro, both will work in your computer! The fastest is 990Pro...

Just remember they both will work at 50% it's speed if your laptop only has PCIe 3.0. Then an better option is the Samsung 980 or the Samsung 970EVO Plus, these are PCIe 3.0.
I send you a screenshot. Maybe this hd is running at PCIe 3.0 x 4. Cannot find full specs about this laptop. N552VW-FY217T is the type

Is a 990 or 980 pro at half speed not faster than a normal 980 or 980 evo?

Your laptop has PCI Express 3.0

Look at the speed specs of those ssds
If you buy a PCI Express 3.0 x4 = you will have that speed
If you buy a PCI Express 4.0 x4 = half speed

If the money difference is not big, then buy the PCI Express 4.0 x4 model. You will be able to use it in your future laptop.

That is the same advice I would've given.

Your computer does not support PCIe 4.0, so all SSD you install that are PCIe 4.0 will work at 50% the nominal speed.

The Samsung 980 and the 970EVO plus are both PCIe 3.0 SSD's. The 970EVO is a bit faster and has it's own DRAM build in. So if you want to save some money you can choose one of these.

If money is no problem, then i would also buy the 990PRO or 980PRO even at 50% percent the speed. You always can use it again later in the future for another or new computer that has PCIe 4.0.:) But keep in mind that that future laptop will be equipped already with a PCIe 4.0 SSD! Maybe faster then the 990PRO.

Specially with the prices that are going up, i would not wait to long for it. Unless the pricing situation changes, the 990 Pro is almost always going to be the better buy, despite the fact that it's not a huge improvement over the 980 Pro.

What do you think is the situation? It s been 3 years.
Yep it's dying also, RMA back to Samsung, they will send you a new one. They know very well it's their fault. And still under warranty.

It will slowly get worse, so backup your data today before you loose important files.
Another one that bites the dust...

Samsung gives this drive 300TBW, you not even used halve of this.

Yes this drive is okay. And almost not used. Just 166 times of POR Revovery.

If there is a sudden power off, the firmware must recover all of the mapping and user data during the next power on. This is just a count of the number of times this has happened.

Thanks for your info. Are there any problems with these m2 ssd's with poor health life?

I see the specs from the 980 and I see PCI Express 4.0 x4.

But the read/wrie speed from the 970 evo plus is 3500/3300 and from the 980 pro its 7000/5100. when this one run at half speed the 970 is still faster? or is it not exactly 50 %?
Price is the same.

Or maybe better go for the 990 pro with 7500 / 6900. This is the fastest option? Its 20 bucks more.

I read that PCIe is backwards compatible so it will always work I assume which one I choose

Yes you can choose what you want, they all will work. So if money is no problem i would buy the 990PRO. The Samsung 980 is PCIe 3.0 on Samsung website.

It can be confusing but Samsung has a 980 and a 980PRO SSD drive. The 980 has no DRAM and is PCIe 3.0, the 980PRO is PCIe 4.0 and has it's own DRAM.

No problems at moment with any M.2 drives. Good luck!:)

Samsung now also has a NEW M.2 SSD; The 990EVO! Works in PCIe 4.0x4 or PCIe 5.0x2. Available in 1TB and 2TB. The 990EVO has also no DRAM on board, and uses HMB method.
It is slower then the 980PRO and 990PRO, but faster then the 970EVO Plus and the Samsung 980.

Thanks for your help. Really appreciated. I have only one concern, and would like to hear what's your experience with this. My Current ssd has an Idle temp of 30 degrees celcius.
I see a lot people metion in reviews thatthe 980 pro and 990 pro can get really hot.

The place where the ssd is located in my laptop..it's straight under the heatpipe. See picture.
Wil this ssd get les hot because it runs at half speed? Or will it be the same?

WOW under the heatpipe that's not the best place indeed... Yes it will run somewhat cooler at lower speed's. It will certainly become hotter then your original SSD installed.

But in your case no real problem, it will get only to hot when you do benchmark tests every day, or move/write data on your laptop daily from +50GB. In real life and normal use with your laptop, it will never run so hot that it will throttle down it's speed. But you will definitely see higher temperatures then before when working with it. Also your battery will run out of juice quicker then before because the 990PRO or 980PRO uses more power then your original SSD.

So if you do care about power use, then you better look out for an PCIe 3.0 drive that uses less power.

Everything that you O.C or devices that work faster will get higher temperatures and uses also more power. So you always also gonna need some extra cooling and it's life will be less when something becomes hotter then before. But as said with normal laptop use no real problem, but it definitely will use more power from your wallet or battery.

That's the reason you almost never will find an laptop with a high end SSD installed original, because of it's power hungry and hotter life. Then you need heavy batteries installed and better extra cooling. Then you end up with a heavy laptop, runs hotter, more noise and less energy efficient. A gaming laptop is a good example from that.

Power comsumption is not really a problem. I'm always plugged in. Temperature can be an issue., because at a certain heat level my laptop fans will startup. I use this laptop as my streaming laptop. Its next to my microphone, so If I can avoid my fanns will start up would be nice. I need to replace my stock m2 ssd, because the health is now 84 % after 6 years. That's why im looking for a replacement.

Maybe just go for the 990 pro without heatsink. And look how it works.

Yes surely without heatsink, that does not fit in your laptop. And the 990PRO with heatsink can't be removed without damage!
And also no warranty for damaging that, remember this.

I really suspect pandemic-QC-slump! Even when my 970 Pro NVMe SSD seems to be fine. I received my 970 Pro SSD during the early pandemic, in January, 2021, IIRC.

Interesting, that Samsung SK/CZ refused to take this SSD for repair or replacement. Even tho, it was marked as 60 month warranty..
I hope they replied this in error, I asked them one more time. They told me to try thid SSD in another PC, which is quite interesting idea how to fix this:

The warranty is valid for 5 years if you bought this from a store and you have proof of purchase.

Again a Pandemic sick SSD... Almost all 870EVO manufactured in 2021 die sooner or later. I say again that Samsung should recall all of them back to be replaced.
Try in another PC? That does not do anything, bad sectors are not going to disappear on another PC.:kookoo: You could be right that they had another SSD and send a wrong email to you.

This reminds me of a couple of monitors I received as well, where there are bad pixels. Also a lot of bad pixel reports on the internet from that period.

Well the 990PRO is called on many forums and websites a HEAT HEAD... That's because of it's controller that works very fast, and as you know, what works fast gives a lot of heat. It's not for nothing they say the 990PRO needs good cooling. In your laptop there's no place for cooling at all. So expect higher temperatures as before. Easily +10 degrees when idle. When working the temperature goes up very fast without cooling.

The EVO series are a lot less power hungry and very efficient, but in speed also a little lower. But they stay cooler then the PRO series. An EVO is more suitable for a laptop, because you will never see or feel the difference in your PC with or without PRO. If you want a fast SSD that is efficient and stays cooler, then an EVO is the best. If you are putting up your shoulders for everything, then buy a 990PRO.

You could also take a look to the new 990EVO, it's even faster then the 970EVO Plus. And not so power hungry, and thus lower temperatures. In speed it goes just below the 980PRO.

But the 990EVO is also not free of some cons; Performance isn’t bad, but the drive’s power efficiency leaves something to be desired.

Thanks for you help again. The current ssd installed is fast enough for me. So even the 970 evo plus will be an upgrade. I see the 970 evo plus has got dram cashe, the 990 evo not?
Maybe better for me to go for the 970 evo plus 2 tb. Because the 990 evo will run at half speed. Than the 970 will be faster In my system because of PCI Express 3.0 x4
