Should I request a replacement SSD due to the Sequential Write Speed reducing by 1/2 ?
Would you consider the SSD faulty, or at risk of failure?

Sequential Write advertised up to 3,300 MB/S vs currently 1,137 MB/s.

I purchased a new ready to run pc in June 2022, with MS OS installed on this Samsung SSD 970 EVO Plus 1TB. I then purchased an additional new 970 EVO Plus for my data in Jan 2023 and ran my first Samsung Magician test. The test results for the MS OS SSD were fine with Sequential Write at 3,467 MB/s, but then when I ran another test in March 2023 it had reduced to 1,071 MB/s, and ever since stayed quite low. I ran my most recent test as Samsung Magician updated to Version 8, on 03 Nov 2023 and although increased slightly is still only half speed at 1,537MB/s.

I've attached Screen shots of Samsung Magician test results
I'm running Windows 11 Home, 23H2.

Difficult to say... Can you show the screen of the SMART table? But honestly i don't think that the SSD is having problems. Maybe try another NVMe slot? Or boot from another SSD and then test this NVMe drive again without OS or programs that can interfere the test. Maybe it is some other program like an AV that is bothering the test.

For a good test, this SSD should be connected to the first NVMe slot, closest to the CPU. And boot from a Sata drive, then test this NVMe drive again. And if possible, maybe test it on another computer. Do a test like this on an SSD used as C: drive and OS Boot, is giving always mixed results.
You should close most background applications such as indexing, Windows updates, and anti-virus disabled in the OS to reduce run-to-run variability, and get a reliable testing result.

Hi SPDIF,
Thank you for that information.
I've attached the SMART table report.
From what i've been reading about read and write speeds, is it correct to say its not a real issue as I'm using this SSD only for my MS OS. It's really only going to be an issue if i was installing/writing a lot of programs etc and I wanted it done fast?

As far as i can see your SSD is 100% healthy! So i would not worry about it, there's nothing wrong with it. You should do a test like this only when it is not used as Boot and OS drive. Too many things can interfere with the results. So take what you see with a grain of salt... You will have no issues even if you install a game from 50 or 100GB, so no worry's here. :)

Reason to half SSD speed maybe is this. Check your Windows update status. In theory update in August fix the problem but... Just make check for sure.

Well thank you SPDIF, I'll leave it alone, and thank you for your personal and prompt replies.
Thank you also TumbleGeorge for your in put. My issue may just disappear in a future MS update, but until then I'm not sweating about it.

I have to say, I'm fairly new to the computer world, and I'm finding Forums such as TechPowerUp and Community Support sites to be 1,000% better than product support, who just seem to cut and paste information to troubleshoot.

Thanks again for sharing your knowledge.

This SSD is one of the Top best they had available for not to high price, and it still is! have fun!

My very first SSD was an 970EVO from 256GB.... Without the Plus. And it also still works. Back then they where soo damn expensive.

My 2nd nvme was a 1tb 970, non X. Among the best SSDs I've had so far. Ran fast, ran cool, even on a laptop's small confined space. Later on I fully upgraded to x2 970 2tb. Passed those on to the son's desktop. It was Samsung at the height of SSD manufacturing.

Here the speeds of an old 970EVO no Plus of 256GB, not bad if you ask me!

And the speed of an 970EVO Plus 500GB.

Different parts? Haha lol. :) No just the same as you have, i am doing nothing special, just test it. I think in your case the writing is lower because your SSD in throttling. Meaning i think it became to hot, and then the speed goes down! I see temperature from almost 70 degrees Celsius, that's your problem. You have to cool it more, and maybe that is the same problem that OP has...

Also your CrystaldiskMark is on the wrong settings... In the settings tab, you have to choose NVMe SSD.

Hi,
I've never poked around in the settings
Little different but not in the main write
I've got a heatsink with a little fan running at about 5400rpm lol it was way worse than that without it
Think the difference in temp 1 & 2 was 20c+ before

You use this drive as boot and windows installed on it?

As said earlier, you have to test your SSD while you boot from another SSD to get real results.

Then you will never get good results on the testing. Windows interferes while you test the drive, or even antivirus programs. You have to close all open programs, including antivirus, windows indexer and so on.
That is why i boot from an 870EVO SATA drive, and then test the 970EVO from this drive. So no programs and no OS that can block your testing.

SPDIF, did you leave all the Crystal Disk Mark setting on default, except changing from Default to NVMe SSD in Settings? It appears TharashZone just left everything as default.

I noticed the difference in the title of the second and third test, ie
Default is SEQ1M Q1T1 and RND4K Q32T1
vs
NVMe SSD is SEQ128K Q32T1 and RND4K Q32T16

I did the test myself on all my drives and the results are quite different. Changing settings to NVMe SSD gives the best results.

Heres my data drive on D (boot on different drive C)
Samsung 970 EVO Plus NVMe M.2 SSD 1TB

See? Your drive is performing very well! The default is used for old HDD and SATA SSD, for NVMe SSD you have to change it in CrystalDiskMark!

Anyway welcome to the club. LOL :) I knew nothing was wrong with it.

That was my data drive (D)

This is my boot/os drive (C) that i was concerned about showing 1/2 write. But going by what you have been saying I'm not concerned as os is probably affecting the results.
