AMD/ATI's graphics partner Sapphire has released today Radeon HD 4870 TOXIC, an overclocked Radeon HD 4870 card with a custom cooling on it. What makes this card so special is the patented Vapor-X cooling system and its clock speeds higher than the reference boards. The cooling itself takes up two slots, makes use of a Vapour Chamber technology and features a thermally-controlled fan supported by three copper heatpipes. The new TOXIC model is also factory-overclocked to 780MHz GPU from 750MHz stock speed and 4000MHz memory from 3600MHz stock respectively. The card is equipped with 512MB GDDR5 memory. It offers 800 Stream Processors, has DirectX 10.1 and CrossFireX support, a PCI-Express 2.0 interface and two DVI connectors. Except that and maybe the fancy retail box it ships with, there's nothing else about this card that could interest you more. Pricing and availability are still unknown.

May this actually be a 4870 with a decent cooler?

nice card, too bad Palit hasn't a clue on making a sleek 4 series card, id like to see what the PCB design is.

It sure is! I'd remove the crappy logos and have it all black and add a red LED in there. ;) I'd like to see a 1GB version as well, that's be pretty slick. :D
 
Looks good i await the reviews, still torn on what 4870 to get; dunno what card to get but this seems good to me.

Was impressed with Palits card at first but im sure there can be better then Palits dual fan cooler. It underwhelmed me with its noise nad the fact it didnt cool as good as expected.
 
I'm torn between a 1GB 4870 and the 4870X2... :/
 
i guess palit may release a second series of 4800 and 4600 boards, since the current ones are their first dive into AMD parts.
 
As I recall the stock coolers of the 4850/70 also use 'vapor chambers', so much for that then eh.
In fact perhaps this IS the stock cooler :)
 
This is indeed a good looking card from Sapphire.
Will have tsee what it can do over the reference HD4870.

It does look nice in the picture but looks can be deceiving. The cooler might offer very good gpu temps but what about the memory and vrm temps?

And let's not forget about how noisy the Toxic cooler is. Unless it's improved now of course.

Good point! However, by the time I'm ready to purchase anything I wouldn't be surprised if we have a 5850/70/X2 by then. :rolleyes:
 
It exhausts heat out the back. Thank goodness.

I of course refer to this PowerColor card -- great card, pretty good cooler, but I can imagine how hot the inside of your case will get with it. :wtf:

Nope, you recall the special version of 3870 that had a vapor chamber cooler. Vapor champer is a flat heatpipe, so that works great under the heatpipes to make a good contact to the core and distribute the heat in to them.

edit: seems some of the stock coolers have a small vabor chamber bottom.

Xigmatek's BATTLE-AXE VD964 could use one of those, as this happens:

Its got external exhaust but with the fan blowing on it, it wont all be directed out. I like the cooler tho....

If it causes the inside of your case to get too hot, you needed to reevaluate your case's cooling to begin with. The heat dump of a non-exhausting gfx cooler is greatly exaggerated, they're benefits over reference cooling far outweigh any cons they may have.

Now, that's not to say a high performance cooler that does exhaust heat is a bad thing, just that a high performance cooler that doesn't exhaust is not a bad thing.

I recall the X1950 series coming with the Accelero X2, that wasn't a HES, and it performed very well.

thx for saying that dude, i also recall HES systems tend to raise noise levels.

to everyone else if you don't know what the acronym "HES" is then your a noob:laugh:
 
Just called Sapphire's US Division - AthlonMicro - and spoke with a sales dude there for a bit. The X-Vapor Cooler is just a modded Zalman VF1000, so the cooling should be quite good compared to the stock cooler. With that said, I think you will see about a $30-$40 hike over their standard 4870. The 4850 Toxic is $30 more than the standard Sapphire 4850, so it shouldn't be much more than that.

Also, someone said something about a 1GB 4870 Toxic, and I agree, but don't hold your breath. They have the 1GB 4850, and they have not released it in a Toxic version yet. One can always hope though.
