Scythe Prepares KillerWhale CPU Cooler

After introducing some of the most efficient CPU coolers, the Japanese cooling specialist, Scythe, is now planning to launch a new cooler named KillerWhale, designed and manufactured originally by DeepCool, distributed by Scythe. This cooler is specifically designed keeping the Intel LGA-1366 socket in mind, where a slightly bigger, rectangular base serves the application better.

The most characteristic feature of this cooler is its large, rather thick fan and sweep area. Its construction seems fairly simple: six heatpipes arise from a rectangular copper CPU contact block, which convey heat to an aluminum fin array that propagates along the plane of the motherboard. The entire cooler measures 54.5 x 143 x 143.5 mm, and weighs 900g (around 2 lbs). The 120mm fan rotates at speeds between 800 and 1800 rpm to dole out up to 78.32 CFM of air. The KillerWhale supports Intel LGA-1366, LGA-775, AMD AM3, AM2+, AM2, 940 and 939 sockets. It will hit stores soon.

Finally some relief to AMD sockets. Those tower ones blow either into the PSU or on to the Graphics card. Top down is always the best.

The Sunbeamtech CoreContact Freezer is mounted at a 90deg angle on AMD sockets. So it blows towards the rear exhaust fan.
On topic: this looks promising. I'm not fond of the proprietary fan though...

Actually if you research it you will find that tower coolers perform better than top down coolers. There's a reason why the absolute top performing air coolers on SilentPCReview's recommended list have become all tower coolers:

That thing almost killed my brand new 9850BE. 90C idle. Came in Last Friday went back to egg on Tuesday. The most painful HS to install and absolutely horrible performance. Don't know what got into those review sites brains and gave this high marks. Though I have similar Xigmatek 3 pipe cooler that works wonder for me. this cooler might work well for Intel cpus not AMDs. Look at the base of the cooler and you will know what I mean. And I have been installing PCs and coolers for 4 years now without any probs.

I accept but to find the right one for AMD sockets is tough. I prefer top down in most cases especially I have a 130mm high air flow side case fan blowing directly into the case and into the cpu area.

And once again its my preference.
