Sony has announced that it has increased its pricing for the Playstation 5 consoles by around 25 percent from today in several regions. For now, it's Europe, Middle East, Africa, Australia and New Zealand that are being affected, but there are reports of Sony also planning on increasing the price in the US by at least 30 percent. Sony's official reason behind the rather steep price increase is due to "a backdrop of a challenging economic environment, including high inflation and fluctuating exchange rates".

The new pricing for the PS5 Digital Edition will be €499.99 in the Eurozone, £429.99 in the UK, AU$749.95 in Australia and NZ$859.95 in New Zealand. Sony didn't reveal pricing in other currencies and instead says to check with your local retailer for the new pricing. For now, the EU and the UK avoid price hikes on the PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive as Sony so elegantly calls it, whereas in Australia it'll increase to US$829.95 and in New Zealand it'll cost NZ$949.95. Sony will also announced a decrease in the price on the stand alone Blu-ray drive today and it will cost €79.99, £69.99, AU$124.95 and NZ$139.95. The PS5 Pro is not receiving a price hike for the time being.

We know who we should be thanking for this. :shadedshu:

It's always the case that when USA increases tariffs or other duties the whole world has to subsidize them, because the moment a company just increases the price in USA, it gets singled out there and is subject to organized boycott.

Weird choice of poll options... I won't buy consumer product Z, therefore I'm not supposed to care if its price explodes?

Well... Yes...
PCMR are supposed to laugh at the console plebs while paying thrice the whole console's price on a single component to preserve the shininess of master Jensen's jacket!

I don't know about you, but I would call this fraud and abuse. The euro is gaining strength against the dollar, not weakening, oil used for transportation is now very cheap, consoles are not made in the US nor is Sony American.
So what kind of insane justification can they use now?

Well $ony probably is doing this to prevent grey market sales boom. I did a quick search and it seems in general 40% of gaming consoles are sold in N.A. If Sony did pay to get it imported, they won't want people to undercut them by bringing in grey market items from, say EU.

On top of that, the Japanese Yen has been weak for years now and it's not improving. It could simply be that Sony has to pay more for everything due to the weak Yen and thus decided to increase the retail pricing.

D. Trump customers taxes are ON.((( What also leads to crease GPU's and CPU's prices? You never get the RTX 5090 for 2000$ (€)....?

I agree. This doesn't make sense to me. How could costs of production or transportation be higher, when there is continuous technological improvement (6nm and 7nm have very good yields and are cheaper than in 2020), oil is relatively cheap and electricity is also getting cheaper every month now largely thanks to renewables supplying the grid with current. Why should Europeans pay for mistakes of Americans or Japanese?

The PS5 is the most disappointing PS gen for me anyways

for people without a PC or an Xbox, sure it’s great for multiplatform games and affordable, simple ,4K gaming

for people that have a PC or other means to play said games (and even cloud gaming now)..the PS5 has become too redundant because there is a huge lack of proper exclusive games, they decided to push for live-service and VR this gen. Good for them.

If you have patience and a PC, PS5 true exclusives are..demon’s soul remake, astro bot and GT7 in more than 4 years. Why would I purchase a PS6 in the future now that I have a PC ?

Grey market and individual importers also pay tariffs, sales tax, duties and other applicable taxes unless it's under the de minimis limit. If Sony feel so threatened, they should be getting the US to lower their world-leadingly high de minimis limit.

You are not wrong, I want to buy some lenses for my camera and I know camera makers have all started to raise their prices(luckily so far only in US leaving rest of the world untouched) and 3rd option really should have been throwing Sony under the bus for being greedy.

Apparently this time around even individual parcel packets are going to be charged with tariffs so not even gray market is spared from the stupidity.

Which is pretty reasonable if you ask me. My de minimis limit is about 20USD equivalent, but on the flipside I only have to pay 15% sales tax so it's not too bad.

"My opinion about all paystations. They are excessively expensive."

German / Austria price search 780€

I doubt a 1tB console is useful. My 2TB KC3000, where i only used 350GB for something, else get's to its limits for only windows gaming.

Star Wars Jedi Survivor - Bad graphics - think around 150GB
Avatar Pandora - something aroudn 120GB
GTA V ? 100GB
Control ? 90GB

...

The hardware is not the best. I bought years ago an usb controller to see if I can use such things for around 10€. the operating system and build quality of paystation 4 was not the best. (i wanted to see whats wrong for one and so i opened one which was defect from someone else) I assume the build quality is similar for the paystation 5.

Maybe someone can make a junk pc list similar to the paystation 5. I'm curious how cheap the paystation 5 really is from the parts.

e.g. ryzen 7400f or 7500f / A620 or B650 mainboard / cheap dram / cheap storage / cheap graphic card - years ago it was teh radeon 6600. And of course with bad cooling - no extra fans - cheap power supply unit - cheapest case

Never go full Jensen... Ever...

I'm already boycotting US companies, i can surely boycott a Japanese company too.

Good luck buying a CPU or graphics card.

they aren't made in the US, and i can buy used and not support countries that want to invade other countries. I'm just being coherent and doing the same as i did for Russia.

Plenty of people like me had 4090s but never gamed on them. Now have 5090s but do not game on them. Yet do play games on Switch and PS5. The rare PC games I do play are ones that could be run off an APU and are only on the PC. A lot of people just do not like gaming on PCs or do not want the stench of the community on them. When I buy 6090s I will not game on them.

Why the fuck are EMEA and ANZ affected by tariffs for imports to USA?

They are not.

But we have seen this in previous round of tarrifs under first Trump administration. Companies just don't dare to raise prices solely in USA, they spread the cost of US tariffs to the whole world, and US customers reward them for that. Fail to do that, and you get singled out as "anti-American", and people call for boycott.

And it doesn't matter where the company is from, or what share of their revenue are US sales.
