Technically, you can't be addicted to a computer or the internet, there is nothing physically making you go back to it. It's actually labeled as a dependancy, similar to people who take Adderol for ADD or ADHD.

i always thought smoking addiction was partly for the nicotine etc and partly for that stick in your hand - so in that case there would be some pyschological element to it

True, but nicotine is a very addictive drug(studies have shown more so than heroine). It takes a lot to quit smoking.

To appear to be cool, like a movie star? To fit into certain niches of people? To give into peer pressure of good friends?

an addiction is reliance upon anything that disrupts normal daily life.

addiction is a psychological dependance. if a chemical causes you to need something, it has to do it by changing the chemical balance in your body, thus altering your mind. stduies have shown that you can be addicted to excercize (spelled it wrong, i know, but still true), and even chocolate. the weirdest i've ever heard of is being addicted to scented candles. some serial killers could be said to be addicted to the sight of blood, or knives or something along those lines.

Studies have shown that you can be addicted to exercise

This is actually true, I know someone that was completely addicted to exercise, to the point they could not go one day without execising. They cried, whenever they coudln't go to the gym, or were ill and had to stay in bed, rather than being able to exercise.

Addiction, and dependance are very similar to each other, and both have a psychologcal element, in that, it can make you feel better, about yourself, about life, or whatever it may do, and this is usually what gets someone to continuosly go back to their habits. When it's to do with mind-altering drugs, they can of course, create chemical inbalances, which can make things even worse, and make it much more difficult to get rid of the habit, the dependance. Drugs like heroin, have painful withdrawal symptoms, and this makes getting off the drug extremely difficult, along wih having to face all of the psychological problems that are connected with it.
One more thing, is that the person may have become hooked on drugs, because of trouble in the rest of their life, and this can also be the case with any other dependance, or addictgion, including computer/internet addiction.

Aye, look at all the teenage girls who play cyber-fiddle online, weaving their tales and lies to get acceptance by people, because they lack self-esteem. Or maybe housewives who feed on the adoration and adulation gained in MMO video games, because they're not happy with their marriage, but cannot be bothered to DO something about it as an adult should do. And then there's parents, who neglect their children, because they're both too busy 'raiding' in WoW or some similar game. Instead of spending quality time with the kids they ignore them, shovel them off to shady babysitters and/or stick them down in front of a gaming console or another computer so often, that the kids themselves start to become dependant on the games.

The more that society embraces technology and the internet, the harder it is to spot, or prevent people from going over board.

well most hystorians agree that if we didn't drop the a bomb on japan that the kamikazi runs would have continued for quite a while longer, although americans are pretty f-ed up in our own right, keep in mind that the "song" soldier boi was made in the US and if you ever looked at the lyrics you will realize just how messed up america is to listen to that not to mention that they look like idiots when they do that moronic dance
