i was playing, and suddently my computer started making noises and my screen turned black, as in the monitor got disconnected.
I could still hear sounds from the game and discord, so i knew something was wrong with the GPU, and i shut down the computer.
minimal was spilled on the GPU and nowhere else. so i cleaned it of with some baby wipes and set it to dry.
i then double checked the rest of my hardware and made sure there was no signs of damage.. Then i popped in a spare GPU, but now the pc wont boot.
what might've gone wrong here?? still waiting abit before i pop in the original GPU, just really scared something else might've been damaged..

If it got on the GPU there is good chance it got somewhere else too (splashing). Best would be to take everything apart and check again. Not just wipe down the GPU. Liquid tends to get under heatsinks and connectors on the motherboards very easily where you can't see it very well.

I once had a spill with a watercooling setup that I was testing while the power was off, a hose leaked onto the mainboard. Even after it looked dry the PCIe connector and CPU socket was still wet. I used my DataVac blower and blasted the board top to bottom with air to get the water out.

I'm pretty sure there was no further splashing on other compoments, i checked all around with a flashlight and couldn't find anything. Just worried about the pc not booting after i switched graphics card.. Thanks for the reply!

Baby wipes wont do it. You need to remove the heatsink and swab the entire card down with the highest concentration of isopropyl alcohol you can get, 91 or 99% ideally. When i say swab it down i mean get it wet to the point that there cant be any trace of coffee left on the pcb or contacts. Dry it of with an old tshirt and set it out to dry for a day. The heatsink will be a pita to clean but can be taken apart. Clean as much of the coffee off as you can get with qtips etc. Do the same with the mb pcie slot. Remove the mb from the case take everything out of it and dont power it up again until youve cleaned it from top to bottom with alcohol and a lint free cloth. An old tshirt will work for both cleaning and drying.
Being that you didnt clean the gpu slot out thoroughly before you tried restarting. Theres a good chance the slot is fried.
Goodluck.

buy a brush, 99.9% Isopropanol and clean the whole motherboard and GPU with alcohol (and use a good amount of IPA)

Electronic boards can be washed with water, but be sure to dry them well before use. Isopropyl alcohol has the advantage of also cleaning off soldering flux although it is not harmful to leave it on. I use 91% isopropyl alcohol as it is readily available and the stronger stuff is expensive.

if it were me, id remove the GPU (assuming its a video card), totally disassemble it, & using isopropyl alcohol, id completely clean it.
id not run it until id done this, & was as confident as i could be, that there was no more coffee on it.

then id cross my fingers, plug it back in, & hope it powered on

Break Cleaner also works, I used to wash my motherboards in the dish washer then blow dry with compressed air. Hang in the window boom fresh.

Funny advisers... if the coffee had sugar you can rub the isopropyl alcohol in your chair. It will not dissolve sugar. Only water does it. Distilled water and hot ultrasonic bath. It is the only way. Then bake for 24 hours in the oven at 100-125C or do it longer at lower temperature, to prevent popcorn effect afterwards as the moisture soaks in and can blow the semiconductors.

Those brake cleaner fans also check if it doesn't contain acetone or alcohol additives, they do differ wildly, it will break the silk screen with time.

Jeebus... use your head and don't try any idiocy that comes into you mind without looking at precise formula and apply basic chemistry.

When I used to solder military circuit boards isopropyl alcohol was used to clean them afterward. CRC Brakleen can be very nasty (we used to shoot bees out of the air with it at work) but their QD Electronic Cleaner is great for electrical things. The QD dries faster than MAF sensor cleaner.

Disassemble everything, clean with 91% isopropyl or QD, let dry then use compressed air on before reassembly to make sure all traces of liquid are gone.

By all means, remove the motherboard battery before washing it with anything.

The dishwasher detergent is a strong alkali, I'd never use it to clean electronics, did you use that?

i washed motherboards and even CPU sockets in the sink with normal dishsoap.

clean, rinse, let it dry for a day and then clean it again with IPA and a thick brush to get rid of water under chips, wait for another 4-5 days and it's perfectly fine.

Buildzoid does that too.

99% iso... the less than 1% water will evaporate instantly. Any less and you are just adding water to the problem.

I've cleaned a few motherboards and GPUs in the dishwasher (no detergent). It works pretty well, so long as you remember to take any mechanical parts off (or the battery if it's a mobo).

Just please get 99%, it can't be that much more. I buy litres of it here for 10 bucks can. How expensive could it be down there?

I have a rule, never put liquid near my computer. Very expensive if you have an accident.
I don't put any drinks on the right side of my desk where it could fall on my pc, left side of my desk fine, dump drinks on my keyboards all day long, have to wash them under the tub faucet after major spills but they work fine again if you give them a couple days to dry. There's a reason I have multiple keyboards.

If you were to spill liquid on your keyboard or mouse could it possibly affect the motherboard it's connected to? Or would the only things that could potentially be destroyed be the keyboard or mouse itself?

Your mouse and keyboard have power going to them, which is connected to your board. It can short out.

hmm this is another reason why you should really never eat or drink near a computer.

If you were to spill liquid on your keyboard or mouse could it possibly affect the motherboard it's connected to? Or would the only things that could potentially be destroyed be the keyboard or mouse itself?

Your mouse and keyboard have power going to them, which is connected to your board. It can short out.
If you're quick on the draw ie if you unplug the keyboard or mouse asap (like as soon as you spill the drink) you probably won't damage anything (I haven't yet, each keyboard has been though at least 2 major spills), if you leave it plugged in while it's wet you could damage both the hardware and the usb port it connects to if it shorts.

Also if you don't rinse it immediately you get sticky keys, I run the water until it's hot then douse the entire keyboard for about 20-30 seconds. Do not rinse a keyboard with a built in battery.

I should've figured. My computer is relatively far away so it would never get wet from any drinks I drink in front of my computer -- even if I spilled a big gulp.

At least when I had my keyboard and mouse on a KVM that provided some more isolation for my computer from spilled drink fiascos -- which I have had in the past.
