In just over two months, players will finally get their hands on Final Fantasy XVI, the next mainline installment of the Final Fantasy series. The game follows Clive Rosfield as he harnesses powerful Eikons to overcome his tragic destiny. Today's State of Play not only explores intricate details of the story and world lore, but also gives a first glimpse into the game's party combat and colossal battles with new Eikons.

We hope today's broadcast was exciting for everyone, both for fans keeping up with Final Fantasy XVI updates, and those who are hearing about the game for the first time. Get a deeper look at combat, stunning Eikon battles, and the world of Valisthea before FFXVI arrives on PS5 June 22.

Clive's Hideout
Clive's Hideout, which serves as his base camp throughout the game, was revealed at State of Play. The footage showcased Clive preparing for upcoming battles by crafting items with gathered materials or tackling training modes. Players can also complete a variety of side quests as well as Mob Hunts, that allows you to take on stronger enemies. Mob Hunts can be accepted from the Hunt Board where you'll spot a familiar face from the series - Moogle!

Loresman Harpocrates and Vivian Ninetales
Loresman Harpocrates appears in Clive's Hideout. He studies the history and customs of Valisthea, researching the local climate, folklore, religion, and traditions. Harpocrates is very curious about Clive's stories he takes home from his adventures. As Clive shares his past experiences, Harpocrates gains new knowledge as a researcher. And the Thousand Tomes in which he keeps records of his knowledge, will become more and more complete. You can read up on everything about Valisthea if you visit Harpocrates and unravel the Thousand Tomes for yourself. Don't forget to talk to Harpocrates when you stop by the Hideout during your travels.

Vivian the Military Scholar is well versed in the affairs of the countries of Valisthea and gives Clive lectures at various points in the story. You can talk to her in the Hideout as well. Vivian is very knowledgeable about present day Valisthea, as well as its history. She will be happy to bestow you with knowledge of the past. With her help, you can explore the details of ever-changing character relationships and world affairs during specific time periods. Whenever you want to review the story so far or determine where Clive should go next, her knowledge will surely be of great help. We hope you take advantage of their extensive knowledge to further immerse yourself in the story of Final Fantasy XVI!

New Combat Showcase
The latter half of the show was focused on combat. The show revealed new footage of Clive's action gameplay, titanic clashes between the Eikons themselves, and epic Eikonic abilities. The show also unveiled many other details and characters for the very first time, so keep your eyes peeled!

In the new State of Play, we provided an in-depth look at the combat system, support system, and RPG elements that we have not been able to share with you until now. We hope you enjoyed all the new updates and stay tuned for more information as we draw closer to the Final Fantasy XVI's June 22 release.

Final Fantasy XVI is set to launch exclusively on Sony PlayStation 5 on June 22, 2023. A PC version is expected at a later date, but Square Enix has not revealed any launch window details.

Soooo PC and Xbox will get theirs..... in 2025-ish?????

IMHO (only looked at the few pictures in the article):
The indoor environment and the two humans look terrible, like 10 year old tech.
The mix of unreadable paper beside the moogle and on the hunt board with overlay text.
Why wasn´t the papers localized, which is easy to do?
The old pixelated blue boxes and character icons seem cute.
But also those menues and progress bars could be of a more common artstyle, not such a wild mix.

This game looks like a lot of button mashing and little thinking or in depth combat mechanics which is pretty typically of FF games since FFX. Honestly just go play a souls game or tw3. If you are fine with Anime style graphics the Tales games have a way better combat system (tales of zestria). Half this new FF game is targeted at making the game easier but that kind of drives the point home that the combat is mostly going to be busy work so it doesn't matter if the game gives you handicaps during combat or when picking skills because it's all pretty generic and doesn't matter much.

I think we should wait for reviews before criticizing it, but yes I am not impressed so far. The head of FFXIV helped make FFXVI, and the combat in FFXIV is a lot of fun, so I am not going to write it off until reviews first.

Almost all games are getting too easy I miss the Ninja Gaiden days or TMNT on NES days for that matter even Elden RIng I found kinda easy.

FF games are meant to be played for the story these days and I've enjoyed most of them even 13 that a lot of people hate I agree with @evernessince these day's I more look forward to the next Tales game vs FF.

I more looking forward to the second part of FF7 remake can't wait for this to come out so they can start talking about that lol.

Yeah, Elden ring was definitely on the easier side for a souls games. Guess a lot of people complained about Sekiro difficulty even though a ton of people bought it anyways.

Just noticed a certain kingdom/ country on the map seems to have a very similar geographical look to a certain real world country.

Should't be hard to figure out which one I refer to - It's interesting yet weird at the same time.

I'd like to add Mega Man 1, 2 and 3 to that list as well. Oh, and Contra! :D

I'm actually in the middle of playing FF8: Remastered on Steam. Owned the PSX game back in the day (still have it, actually - all four discs) and it's always been my favorite. Beating Omega Weapon on it was SO damn satisfying! Trying to do it again on Remastered.

Finish FF VII for crying out loud...

High up in my reasons to dislike Sony's exclusivity deals.

I used to be a fan of FF series, but post FF8, I pretty much lost interest in it. And when it got to the FFX, the games are totally unlike what they used to be. I feel Square is just milking on the FF franchise, but the underlying game is completely different, and to me, just feels dull and boring.

While I love TW3, it's combat system is not really an absolute reference, imo it's fine, but not mind-blowing. The Witcher mechanics are interesting, but the "feedback" and encounter design are not on the level of a Tales of game.
The guy in charge of the combat design of FFXVI worked on devil may cry, Dragon's Dogma, Monster Hunter, onimusha, and several street fighters /capcom vs games. So, there's a chance that it's good. Naoki Yoshida is also a very "everyone need to have fun" kind of producer. FFXIV was so successful (most profitable FF ever) because casuals can play it, but hardcore players will find a challenge with the ultimate battle as well.

it honestly looks mediocre the more I watch this gameplay... I have decided I will pass on it personally.

Directed by Yoshi-P... I trust it's gonna be a hit. Better than that only if they get Yoko Taro to write a Final Fantasy lol
