I really didn't think they would do this so soon. People seemed pretty adamant it would not happen because oled requires a completely different connection.

Gabe probably googled steam deck and saw this thread, and saw my eccentric all caps desire for OLED Deck's, and he was like you know what I am going to help this kid out.

You can thank me later when you are in Wizzards hot tub enjoying 16:10 gaming in OLED in pure glory with Vivaldi and Bach playing in the background. The glory days have arrived!!! :rockout::rockout::rockout:

It's literally changed gaming for me. so many games that were on my backlog I never got to that I have been playing since I bought mine early this year. Dishonored was amazing on Deck, the audio was incredible, and honestly the colors never bugged me, but they updated the color profile recently and the colors really do pop now, its very nice.

Also, so many games that don't play nice with Windows anymore just work on Deck, like Prototype is a pain in the ass to get to work on Windows, but its two clicks on Deck, I have had a lot of experiences like that.

I actually just took a break from playing FFX HD Remaster on my Deck to type this, at 8000k and colors moved up two points past default, its stunning to look at even on my LCD Deck... can't imagine OLED honestly cause original Deck still looks amazing to me.

I use my desktop more often overall. My Steam Deck gets used for less demanding games like Stardew or emulating classic games. Playing a round of Hades in bed before going to sleep has been very enjoyable. My Steam Deck has been amazing when traveling.

Although I wouldn't play a game like Cyberpunk on the Deck, it is one of the most popular games to be played on the Deck. Plenty of people are using it as a desktop replacement even though it has significantly less performance than a desktop.

Yeah 90Hz is actually perfect because the APU can barely run most games at above 100 Hz (e.g. Apex Legends at max 15W TDP). Here's hoping the panel also has FreeSync/VRR.

no freesync/vrr, confirmed in this article. no reason given as to why not, but I agree it would have been a very nice welcome if it had this, especially at 90hz with a 1-90hz range.

read all the reviews and watched a few big youtubers, just watched this one as well, and yeah my heart is pretty deadset on getting the $549 variant, but not making as much money this year as I had hoped, not by a long shot in fact, so I am going to have to sell my og Steam Deck at a decent loss and my 360mm AIO I have not used yet to help cover this upgrade. I need to sleep on it for a few more days though I think because I really love my og steam deck, been playing FFX all day on it actually cause I had no work today. I also kind of wish Steam had an actual burn in screen policy... because I play my Deck a lot... not sure what to do honestly.

Overall, the Deck and the desktop are probably pretty close to 50/50 for gaming. What the Deck does is expand my ability to game, by adding availability when I'm not at home or someone else is using the PC. So I'm doing more gaming than I was pre-Deck.

I haven't done any emulation yet, but "retro PC" has been awesome. I've installed Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri on every PC I've owned for more than 20 years... and I can confirm that it runs well on the Deck, too.

I only brought my LCD steam deck 2 months or so ago. I do think companies need to give a heads up if a new model is coming soon or something. As people who recently purchased the previous premium models are likely feel aggrieved.

Luckily, I got the 64 gig version which for the money just had a bump to 256 gigs and I replaced the storage anyway so not that bothered. But I wouldnt have been happy if I had got the 256 gig or 512 gig model which were not priced too different to these.

In terms of the spec update I dont think I care for the screen (especially the 90hz as I am not a refresh rate gamer), whats nice to me is the battery improvement and better wifi. As was annoyed the steam deck I purchased only had wifi 5.

I love my Steam Deck. It is mind-blowing to me that I can run games on my Deck for 10-20 Watts that will use 200W+ on my Windows desktop. The fact that it does that on Linux is just frosting on the cake. When I recently traveled, it was pretty sweet to be able to just play whatever I wanted without lugging around a gaming laptop.

I can say Steam Deck is a pretty cool device, takes less than 15 seconds to dial in a games watt usage, I am now playing Final Fantasy X HD Remaster a whopping 5 watts, it literally only takes 15 seconds to dial it in for any game when you have fps in upper left corner turned on. FFX is capped at 30 fps regardless of settings, and being so old its just insanely easy to run (even though it looks decent to this day)... 5 watts... crazy. I haven't tested how much battery I get with that with airplane mode on. I am guessing I will get around 4 hours play time maybe more. If I go to 3 watts it goes to 22 fps, 4 watts is stable 30 fps, but just in-case intense action scenes come about I decided to stick with 5 watts.

The original PS5 used something like 70-100 watts or somewhere in there I think, and this is the FFX HD Remaster so it probably can't even run on original PS2 is my guess. So 5 watts imo is really impressive. Honestly this is kind of fun seeing how much wattage older games require on a modern chip. I bet with Steam Deck 2 it will run at 2 watts.
Guide to dial in the wattage?

Guide to dial in the wattage?

This is very easy, regardless of what game you are playing.

When in game hit the little button has three dots on here, on the bottom of the Dec right above the speaker as seen here:

1699721371871.png

scroll down to overlay, just level 1 overlay this will show your in game fps in upper left corner.

scroll down more to wattage slide it down from 15 watts until you are no longer sitting 60 fps in game or in my case when I go to 3 watts in Final Fantasy X I hit 22 fps instead of 30 fps which is its in-game cap, so i leave it at 5 watts to be safe. never seen it dip below 30 fps.

it literally takes 10 seconds to adjust the wattage. this is why anything non-SteamOS is a joke to me for portable handheld gaming, also the instant standby feature at the press of a single button, and instant resume where you left off is miles better than anything windows can do. if you need me to explain it better than this let me know, but you can dial in the wattage while in-game... and see the fps changes in real time. if you need help let me know. i dial it in nice and slow to make sure i dont crash the game, its fairly easy to do though, I have never had a single crash, not one.

You need to get a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter.

this is cool, but keep in mind one of the benefits of a Dock is internet being wired, controller, monitor support, usb hub, etc in fact I got my Dock off brand fairly cheap at only 8 bucks, probably the same cost as that cable, so just keep that in mind.

there is a small 5% chance Valve will let you return your Deck btw, if it really only has been two months since you bought it, they might understand the dilemma if you contact them today or within a few days from now.

My guess is they will still say no to a return for refund, but they also understand this situation - so possibly they will say yes, refund you and you can get Steam OLED.

personally, LCD screen looks great if you adjust it right. the latest Steam OS updates let you go into settings and adjust the image, i think default is 7000 white point, I changed mine to 8000, and i moved the srgb slider over two notches to the right - and it looks fucking amazing. OLED will be better true, but honestly I am still impressed with my og Deck.

so you see the left slider?

1699722573249.png

where it says srgb, I put that over two more notches to the right. and 7500k to 8000k. then about 70% brightness with the 3-dot button I showed you earlier - and FFX HD Remaster looks stunning.

each Deck will be a little different possibly, but this is the settings i found to be best for me. you want a nice clean looking white point.

edit: the color calibrate feature might not be on option on stable channel yet. I use the preview channel, it might be on stable by now though as I have had this feature for awhile.

I dont want to return it, I was trying to offer a view from if I had brought the more expensive model which got a major replacement, but for me £350 was about the limit I was prepared to pay, maybe a little higher, so I am still very happy with what I got.

But good you have sympathy for those who are in that situation though, and I agree there is no harm in asking. :)

Interesting it lets you adjust the vibrance and temp, and I agree with what you saying there, I am someone who has often modded games with fake HDR etc. and it gives pretty good results. Although I usually do it on a game by game basis as I think some games look better with more natural colours.

adjusting the display is a very very recent update. within last two months it hit preview channel, so when you see these reviews of Steam OLED, most of them if not all, are comparing the srgb and dci-p3 to the old LCD Steam Deck pre-update, Valve actually made the screen really improved, I think I read somewhere like a 30-40% jump in srgb coverage due to this update, and after tuning it looks great to me, which is why I am hesitant to sell it and get the OLED model.

where it says srgb, I put that over two more notches to the right. and 7500k to 8000k. then about 70% brightness with the 3-dot button I showed you earlier - and FFX HD Remaster looks stunning.

It is not available on stable yet. I am using Vibrant Deck via Decky Loader at 115 saturation for now. I am curious what settings other people are using.

no freesync/vrr, confirmed in this article. no reason given as to why not, but I agree it would have been a very nice welcome if it had this, especially at 90hz with a 1-90hz range.
Linus say that Valve tell him that the display use a MIPI interface (no VRR) instead of a EDP interface. Valve didn't give proper reason but LMG suspect valve to not be able to get a custom display and instead use the same source/manufacturer as the switch oled.
