Strong WIFI Router or WIFI Repeater (Want Range First Floor to Ground Floor)

hi,
im using Dlink 300mb wifi Modem(2antina), this modem wifi range is good, almost i get where i need. but problem is, Wifi gets turn off/disconnect in all Device for 3 seconds if one of wifi device use heavy downloading, every 5 minutes, its modem fault, i have another Modem which have Less wifi range but its stable and really good modem, (this is my previous thread about this problem https://www.techpowerup.com/forums/...youtube-wifi-usb-adapter.226242/#post-3532040)

my question was what should i do for Stable connection,
Wifi Range Extender/Reciever or 3 x5db Antina MODEM,
i cant buy Expensive Modem, as i dont know have high SPeed internet Connection, i just have 2mbps connection..
my budget is Rs.2000/-

Current Modem Location is at First Floor, my Room is at Ground Floor.

what if i use Wifi Repeater with Stable low range Wifi modem?

please Suggest me.

for 2000 rs your best bet is a larger antenna for the router you have.
also if you use 2.4ghz instead of 5ghz the range of the wifi signal is larger.

a good range extender will cost far more than that.

it would help to know the model of the new router with less range so we can point you to the correct antennas as there are a couple of connectors they might have.

if possible you may also look at moving the router nearer the stairs.

another option would be to get a usb adapter with an external antenna. it will have a much greater range than one without.

I would disable the wifi on your current router and deploy a dedicated wireless access point, something like Ubiquity UniFi-AP, AC-Lite, Pro, etc. is something I use when budgets are of concern and you want something that provides good quality wireless signals and management, a set it and forget it kind of device. I do prefer Ruckus on a business-use level, but most home users can't afford what costs 5X more than Ubiquity's device(s). Many wireless routers have very weak wireless implementations, some are really good...but those are usually pretty costly. A dedicated AP from an appropriate vendor will be able to better handle traffic, requests, channel management, SSID management, signal filtering, etc.

I worry that the wifi disconnect issue isn't to do with signal strength but rather the device's ability to handle the network traffic requests and is failing/dropping packets. Though judging from your last thread...signal strength is clearly an issue...and so the next thing to try that is fairly cheap is to upgrade your antennas...I would try this ONLY after verifying Ethernet is stable when WiFi drops. That might save the day here and require no extra hardware to install.

Another thing to ask...when WiFi drops, do the indicator lights for the wireless network on your router still illuminate? Or are they off...because this could very well be a hardware failure or firmware issue and throwing any device or antenna at it won't do a damn bit of good.

Are you in a position where you can run an Ethernet cable to test to see if it is an entire network dropout and not just wireless? If that's the case...there could be other issues at play that haven't been properly identified yet....and you would want to start with replacing the modem/router.

From your other thread, this appears to be your router. A D-Link DSL-2750U, which is a basic home-grade router/modem. Does it get very hot to the touch under heavy WiFi loads? It seems to review relatively well out of over 6000 users so I would imagine it's not a total garbage home-grade device.

Does it have a log in the WebGUI you can review to see if errors/crashes are reported (likely not..but worth a shot)?

I steer clear of wifi repeaters in many cases unless necessary, I've seen them add more issues, latency and disruptions to networks...though in rare cases I've had great luck with them where a wire run wasn't accomplishable. I've used this quite a few times in those special cases with great luck and stability. It costs more than some do, and has great quality and reliability to it and is super easy to setup and manage. I tend to stay away from the cheaper stuff as you get what you pay for with repeaters...and really if you can do a wire run to the area that has weak WiFi and install a wireless access point, that is a much much better and more stable and long term solution. Best case, is to do a wire run to the PC and bypass wireless altogether...but I digress.
