I don't think the complaints are about this game's development taking time (or money). It's more about not having anything resembling a roadmap and instead being a series "wouldn't it be cool if we had X? yes, it would! then let's do X next" kind of decisions. Which basically means we don't really know where the game currently stands. Which in turn for most people is not a reason for optimism.
You cant really put a roadmap on a game, like you cant put a road map on a processor. There will always be issues that will put it behind schedule.
I dont think I ever saw a game from a company that had a schedule since they usually keep that a secret but this game is public funded so that puts it in a league of its own.
And I do think they have weekly or monthly updates that goes public.

You obviously can. Seriously, at the end of the day it's a software product like every other. Why would this one be special ? Actually I know why , because people kept pouring loads of cash into it while asking no questions. The guys behind this project would have had to be absolute morons not to take advantage of this. The lack of an actual road map/goals is so that people wouldn't really be able to directly aim their complaints towards something in particular.

Oh but you can (just like on any project), that's the whole point. Sure there will be delays and issues, but that's why you have the roadmap: to tell you when issues arise so you can try and mitigate them.

And I'm going to circle back a little to the iron triangle rule. The rule says the quality of the project is constrained by the deadlines, the scope and the budget. In this case, we see there is simply no deadline (so no pressure on quality there), just constant scope creep with perpetual budget increase to compensate. It's hip to be anti-system these days and think that this project is simply revolutionary, but any project manager will tell you this is just a messed up setup. Sure, nice things can come out of chaos, too, but most of time they simply don't.

I understand the community salt towards Star Citizen. A lot people backed the development of what sounded like pretty exciting a toaster... and then Chris decided he'd make the whole kitchen.

One thing I'm still not clear on... the bucket of junk space craft I get for my original $50 pledge... I'm assuming that is my starting point in the game. Can I acquire the amazing space crafts that higher paying pledgers might have spent hundreds on with my general progression through the game? If I can't get those ships or better ships, why would I play? If I can, I'm wondering if it was worth it for the people who pledged the big bucks through pledging.

It's my understanding that you can buy the better ships with in-game currency but the catch is that you will have to survive long enough to earn that in-game cash and how are you going to do that when whales that have bought overpowered mega-ships for hundreds or even thousands of dollars that will pummel your little rust bucket all to hell and back? It's probably not going to be fun unless you spend the real world dollars to buy in-game cash but we will see.

That implies this PU will be akin to EVE in terms of player interaction which is not at all what SC wants to be. You will be farming your stuff in PVE mostly, furthering organization goals that affect the overall economy. A lot will be instanced content too.

Every single forum there are people like you that regurgitate the same "this is a scam", "most controversial project", "never going to come out", "blah, blah blah". They don't follow the game, never played it, don't watch the weekly updates, etc. They have made so much progress and the game already looks amazing, the things you can do it unbelievable and very cool. Can't wait for the single player to come out and the multiplayer open world to hit beta.
if it looks, walks, and quacks like a duck, then people are going to call it a duck. You have no idea whether "people like us" invested anything into star citizen, follow it, or were/are excited for it. your comment reads like a fanboi with glasses so tinted you cant see your own nose. you mention "the things you can do are very cool and believable" but dont say what any of those features ARE. Walking at 10FPS through a buggy ship is not "cool" or "unbelievable" unless you have never played games before.

This game is nearly 4 years behind schedule, has received nearly 50x MORE cash then was originally asked for, and all it has to show for it is pre alpha level gameplay and delay after delay. This game has now cost more to develop, and taken longer, then GTA V, one of the best selling games of all time. It has been split into two nearly separate projects. Squadron 42 has been delayed two times, and now has been delayed a third time, as it was supposed to be out at the beginning of December. The MMO shown maybe a year of effort, not 5-6. The company has been rife with accusations of mis use of funds and employees, and the game has been subject to horrific feature creep. Roberts has had a long track record of making products that went way over-budget and were horrible disappointments, both in product and sales, such as "lucky number sleven" and "whose your caddy".

When Chris Roberts shuts up knuckles down and delivers the space sim of our dreams, then I'll eat my hat. But I would be comfortable betting cash that star citizen, if it ever comes out, will be a massive disappointment, as it has shown every red flag for a mis-managed kickstarter disaster.
