except possibly espresso.
The first time I had a real super duper espresso was in Hood River, OR. It was in a paper shot glass, and it was just a bit more than a couple dribbles. The best coffee I have ever had. Second best was a Nitro cold brew from Vessel in Norfolk, Va. I was sweating.

Tea is more popular around the world, and also people in the States especially tend not to drink tea because they go to a Chinese restaurant and ask for green tea and get a cup of hot water.

I am a preacher for tea practically, full of information about it and love to have people try what I like/make.

That doesn't mean I don't love coffee, unfortunately I ruin it with milk and sugar  We have at least 5 strong regular coffees in the house at the moment, we got turned on to Illy brand because that's what they use for coffee on United First Class and we recently traveled.

Separating them is not necessary imo, we can discuss both and if people aren't interested in tea, they can post about coffee instead!

I love the amount of pictures in the thread, especially from the guys with espresso or other fancy coffee machines. They look so good and I WANT.
In Europe it is quite easy. People of the north tend to drink Tea (i.e. gb, nl,...) whilst the southern people take coffee as a kind of culture (i.e. France, Italy, Switzerland, Austria). I'm living in the south of germany with some roots in F. I prefer the french/italian way of making coffee. For me it is a kind of cullture how to make coffee. Also for me tea is only colored hot Water. No matter if one has milk or suugar in it etc. It's the same as having one thread covering AMD and Intel CPU's or AMD and NVidia GPU's.

I wrote a bit about my coffee making equipment. So i get with every post a notification. That's quite annoying if one is interested in coffee and then the posts are mostly about tea. That's the reason i said that it would and could be useful to have two seperate threads. People could select which they are interested in.

Espresso - GAGGIA Classic with PID (XMT7100) mod.
The mod is really worth it: Before the espresso would taste good only like 25% of the time, with mod it's 100%. Coffee grinder is a 1ZPRESSO, it's like the cheapest proper grinder, just like the gaggia is.

Forgot to add and can't edit anymore: and 9 bar spring mod.

I have a Ninja CFP301 that does both k-cups and ground. I purchased it because my MIL moved in with us and loved her k-cups. I like freshly ground coffee this machine does both. My grinder https://a.co/d/1DTXxrR works rather well.

My coffee of choice is whole bean and what's on sale. Right now in queue, I have two bags of Tim Hortons, two bags I picked up in Puerto Rico, and a bag from some local place.

I'm on the verge of turning in my New England card as I'm not a fan of Dunkins coffee. I don't like the inexpensive coffee like maxwell house etc. My hot coffee has to be black and if it gets cold I won't drink it becase it skeevs me out. I won't also reheat it in the microwave. My iced coffee has to have cream and sugar.

How is the cleanup? That is my number one thing I look at. I have and had, in my taste bud opinion, superior brewing methods, but abandonded them because it is a pain in the ass to clean.

Edit, congrats on 15

What? 15 Thanks, that was quick, I'm so old. Clean up isn't bad I don't mind. I don't have to buy filters.

I’d love to have a whole coffee setup like you guys. I did get a honey lavender iced latte from the cafe I frequent near my uni, though.

It was delicious, by the way. (Yes, I like taking portrait photos - fight me)

As for the topic at hand, I’d love to get an espresso machine one day, but I‘m seemingly too keen on spending my money (er, future money) on accessories like an iPad Magic Keyboard than on things that would give me more tangible value and enjoyment, like a good espresso machine. Ah well.

I bought the wife one like this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07HB3GH6W?tag=w050b-20

It has puck filters and a washable screen filter, I use cold water and add ice and it has a adjustable drip and I let it sit on the counter overnight and the next morning there is enough cold brew for a week. She adds half and half or a flavored creamer and ice.

Am I the only one that still uses a percolator?
I don't like drinking anything hot out of plastic but love coffee and tee

I have a stainless percolator for camping, over the fire it makes the very best coffee.

I think it's fine to consolidate the two, and judging by 7 pages in like 3 days it seems others don't mind as well, and no one else is asking for this. Sorry but you'll just have to ignore the tea posts.

Fair enough. The lattes I prefer most days are tremendously over-sweetened for most people, but not for me. No wonder I can’t seen to lose weight…

For the record, I enjoy real coffee, too. I just don’t have it as often because I have a massive sweet tooth, lmao.

Yeah I have lot of junky flavored coffee like Caramel macchiato, mocha macchiato, Papa Nicholas Toasted Sourhern Pecan (this one is awesome), Berres Brothers mocha mint, etc. They're all junk and I make them sugary with milk, but I don't really consider them "real coffee". I don't make these often anymore.

I'm not sure why, but for the last few months my daily tea is a rotation of Masala Chai with brown sugar, Rishi Peach Blossom with honey, and Rishi Vanilla Pu Erh with honey. I'm only drinking sweetened tea, though I did get a new Sugimoto Sencha that I tried and it was the first non-sweetened tea I had in a month probably.

If anyone buys and tries any of these, let me know!

A good burr grinder is $90 and a decent ceramic pour over is $20. A decent electric kettle is maybe $25?

That's all you need. If you need cheaper, buy pre ground coffee and you won't need the burr grinder. However, ground coffee goes bad more quickly than whole bean coffee. So only buy a little bit at a time until you have a burr grinder that can handle whole bean.

After that: 2 tbsp per cup of coffee or a 1 to 15 ratio (or 1 to 18 depending how light you like your coffee) are the common rules of thumb. Coffee filters should be around 100 filters for $5 or so.

-------

There are $30 or cheaper grinders. They suck, a lot. It's probably best to just avoid them and buy pre ground coffee if you aren't willing to pay for the $90 tier burr grinders.

That's about the cheapest I'd recommend personally. Unless anyone else knows of a good quality but still cheap solution?

Instant coffee works fine in a pinch. But I feel like there are a lot of local coffee roasters out there who are offering more unique flavors. All of them have high quality grinders at their stores so you don't need the $90 burr grinder at home, really. Just buy in smaller batches that you can finish in less than a month if it's pre ground.

I can do you one better. Here's a picture of my local tea/coffee shop.

1737931215609.jpeg

Well, that picture (found from Google Maps) is a bit out of date. They put up a glass barrier now so only the staff can go there and get the coffee out for customers. But you still can smell all the kinds of coffee that they stock. Just rows-and-rows of coffee.

Havent been down that I aisle in a while. I go to the roaster to get my coffee. Step up your game. In my case, it is way fresher, and way cheaper. 5 lbs fresh roasted for $58 after tax.

On the subject smells...my wife, the tea drinker, loves the smell of my coffee habits. But rarely, as in twice a year, will drink one.

And on the subject of buying coffee, before Christmas I read that a bunch of factors will increase the price of coffee. I went to the roaster as soon as I heard that, and picked up my usual Ethiopian Sidamo.

Dude said prices will be going up after new year. I am still set for a couple weeks, but has any one noticed the market reacting to influences?

Wait till tomorrow. We just issued 25% emergency tariffs to the USA's #2 trade partner of coffee. The President is also saying that the Tariffs will increase to 50% by next week.

Maybe it will take a few more weeks for our stores of Coffee to be run through before the tariffs fully take effect. But.... the tariffs were supposed to be vs China, not vs Columbia, so I'd say this was somewhat unpredicted. We knew he didn't like Latin America though so maybe some people did foresee this coming.
