The TPU UK Clubhouse

I don't like the sport prejudice with olympics. They just refuse to add "online running" to the list of sporting events. I do hundreds of miles whilst strapped with weighty gear in those gigantic online multiplayer maps. That too whilst having bullets whizzing through the air, explosives thrown in my path, vehicles trying to run you over and whatnot. WE DESERVE RECOGNITION!!
E-Olympics?

E-Olympics?

nah lol, straight up 8th century aged, the world wide recognised classical "olympics" - NO branched off subdivision. Right up there amongst the gymnastics, Judo, track, rowing, bobsleigh.... i wanna see "Online Running" with my face planted on it hehe

I was reading tonight and came across some interesting letters sent from medieval times in England. Does it upset British people that the Swedes and Finns make better cider than you? Not only in modern times, but in medieval too, as we have some letters from medieval times that state how horrible it was compared to their homeland. Is this why the Scots drink so much? My travels also confirmed this, I don't really drink, but when it is given to me for free I will try ciders, but that is my limit. I actually did prefer the ciders in Finland and Sweden... maybe I should write my own handwritten letters to be stored in the archives next to these letters, so people can see the consistency of British fuck up. :D

Anyway. Enough about that before we get smacked down by the TPU gods.

I see the Olympics pretty much like Eurovision or any other awards show of late. Not worth watching.

TPU is monotheistic. W1zzard is God. We are his minions, you are his subjects.

As for your comment, yeah, this is TPU and it's not really the place for a topic that generates so much toxicity. Suffice to say, from a sports science perspective (my educational background), the onset of testosterone in healthy males at puberty creates a physiological environment that women cannot generally match. Strong muscles can produce more force, and more force creates stronger bones. It doesn't matter if testosterone blockers are used later to reduce free testosterone blood levels, the 'foundation' benefits of testosterone are there. From that physiological viewpoint, it isn't logical to allow a testosterone advantage to be carried over to a female sporting category. In the same way, animal studies have shown that once steroids are given to mice (yup, there are studies), even when clear of steroids, the previously doped mice retain more muscle than undoped mice could achieve. I think athletes caught doping should be banned for life. But to throw in a spanner: there are a few intersex athletes out there. They can have both sets of organs inside (uterus and testicles). That's the hardest category to define.

As for doping. A lot of athletes do drugs, but there is a culture difference between personal pride and success, and national pride and victory for the country. For western athletes, sure, they'll dope, but if caught, they'll be sanctioned (being caught was the crime). For the others, it's often state sponsored and just denied. FWIW, Russian athletes are allowed to compete under a neutral flag.

Away from controversy, for my part, I'll be watching the climbing. Love it.

That's 1000x worse than saying, 'I believe it because some guy on you tube said so.'

One cool thing that has come out of the Olympics is the technology. I mean if you can save $200, you can buy the shoes that were banned to be used in the olympics, these things literally increase speed, distance, and stamina for anyone. I plan to buy some someday. Which in turn will motivate me to run more, etc.

I know @P4-630 has a pair.

I don't watch any sports, my relatives in England often try to get me to watch soccer
How dare you call it soccer in a UK thread, it is FOOTBALL over here. (jokes aside)
Anyway I do like watching football and specific sports for the olympics, if I get the time and chance I do enjoy watching the sprint race, swimming and table tennis.
Power lifting is quite cool to watch since its very different to like body building or strong men etc.

I am glad other people enjoy watching it, I think as long as it is only done as a hobby is healthy, but some people take it too far and watch it 12 hours a day 7 days a week and their entire life becomes the sport... that is unhealthy imo. Balance in everything is key to the good life, according to Aristotle, and my own personal lived experience.

For sure yeah, that can be said for a lot of hobbies really, it can fall down into a job or unhealthy addiction.
But yeah when it comes to football, I am a casual viewer but I also support Arsenal FC but I like both Milan(AC and Inter) teams.
The Euros should be interesting to watch as always, hardcore England fans will think it will come home.

I agree, I try to have a few hobbies going at once and alternate between them. Although, sometimes I count one hobby as two, for example, reading books. Reading history/philosophy to me is a different experience than enjoying a sci-fi/fantasy book for entertainment, so to me that is two hobbies even though same medium. As they are just vastly different experiences dependent upon what mood I am in.

Reading, nature (hiking/biking/walking in forest), swimming, gaming, socializing (tpu forums, irl friends is about the extent of it for me), appreciation of music/culture/art (I plan to go to an art museum next week), and the list goes on. I am also in the process of writing a book, though it is just for personal exploration of my own imagination, I don't intend to try to get published.

Can't stop bouncing! :D

They are more comfortable/bouncy/dampening than any other Nike air shoes I've had before.

Why does Arsenal have "arse" in its name? :wtf:

The above question sums up how much I know (or care) about football.

I'm the same re football. Overpaid, quite often dumb as a brick and boring as watching poo get a crust on it in the sun.

Cos they belong in the pants division. Not sure how they managed to take the top spot in the gentlemens prem league. Nah credit to them!

Probably because of political reasons, can't really go calling themselves Gunners FC worldwide, within the fanbase they are also called the "gunners" and the emblem shows a cannon.
There are good amount of players that lack common sense but there are some that are "clever", or they are backed by clever people behind the scenes to help them manage everything.
But regarding them being overpaid, yeah they are but that is because "sports" is just another form of entertainment and we all know the entertainment industry has no fixed average salary in general.
All the production work are probably on a fixed salary, the studio/publisher and the actual face actors/actresses are the ones getting paid the most while their stunt doubles get paid peanuts.

Not excusing the stupidly high salaries they get paid but its also because they arent going to be young forever. I think Ryan Giggs bucked the trend by retiring at 40 where as most would have been out around late 20s to early/mid 30s. But youre not going to outrun or have the same level of stamina as someone who is 10-20 years younger than you.

So the money you get has to cover you for the rest of your life so to speak... At least this was my understanding. Im sure they'll still get money from endorsements and tax free high interest offshore bank accounts if they are smart with their money and dont blow it all by living the celebrity high life.

Yep HIGH income but LOW profession lifespan. Its down to managing finances, making lucrative investments, maintaining healthy savings, secondary/etc source of active/passive income, etc.... all in all for most players this profession (and similar) requires some long-term security. I wouldn't be surprised if most of them cock it up but i can't judge - can't be bothered with keeping tabs on the celebrity scoop.

Would this be legal in the UK? Kappa

Prohibited weapon... we can't carry a knife in our back pockets let alone pick up a 4 legged fire shooting terminator lol

Although i can see special permits for emergency teams in various fields where something like this could be useful. Eg. fire on fire wildfire management (i believe that is what is being portrayed in the vid).

I'm just waiting for the first 'rich kid caused a wildfire with robot fire dog while trying to get views on social media' USA storyline line this summer.

lmao can someone please get me a UK citizen ship, USA is dumb as rocks

this from your previously linked article:

In the US, flamethrowers are legally unregulated in 48 states and are not considered firearms by federal agencies. Restrictions exist in Maryland, where flamethrowers require a Federal Firearms License to own, and California, where the range of flamethrowers cannot exceed 10 feet.

.....is a bit nuts if you ask me! Its a bad-ass weapon. Maybe shift over to Maryland until we get your UK citizenship sorted ;)

The UK is also dumb as rocks, believe me. It's only that you're more restricted to exercise your dumbness in some ways here (for example, in terms of purchasing fire-shooting robot dogs). Stupidity is an epidemic that's reaching global levels through mass media and comfort culture.

Yeah its the same for actors/actress/voice actors as well really, they all play in the same field.
