Taiwan is one of the most wealthy countries in Asia, largely due to things like TSMC. Not sure where the sweatshop allegations are coming from...
First of all I was using hyperbole. Second, Being a wealthy country in Asia doesn’t mean salaries are commensurate with USA labor. There’s not a guarantee of making six figures plus.
Chip manufacturing jobs in the us at least at intel plants will be six figures for many employees as intel announced for its upcoming Ohio plant.
Based on the info I could find, similar fab salaries in Taiwan at TSMC are around 75K per year which is good. But less than what they would be in the USA. There’s a reason why so many companies outsourced labor of manufacturing and assembly to Asia. They rather pay less for labor and pay shipping to import the product rather than build it in the USA at USA labor prices. Of course the supply chain disruptions and rising inflation and shipping costs might very well upend that strategy, we will see.
