Will it make sense to upgrade the R5 5600 to the 5700x3d? If I focus on gaming performance, I can help myself enough, in combination with my RTX 4070. But isn't it better to invest in a cheap AM5 board and buy, for example, an R5 7600? I have already replaced R5 1600, 2600, 3600 and now 5600 on Am4 :). The price of 5700x3d in my market is €270, r5 7600 €210.Thank you.

I'm in a similar situation, from 2700 to 5600X and looking at the 5700X3D, while now running a 7900 XTX.
I'll get the X3D and rock it until AM6, or at least until it can't run anything I'd like it to acceptably (but if I am to be true, the 5600X already runs everything I throw at it with little to no issue).

It depends on how long you plan to use your cpu for without upgrading it.
I'd recommend AM5, since the 7600 has good enough gaming performance for a 4070. DDR5 prices might be a pain, but it just means that next time you upgrade you can simply slot in a better cpu from a later am5 generation.
Though if you care about the now more than the future, 5700X3D would make more sense.

If I were to go for the AM5, the biggest question for me would be the motherboard. I now have a very well equipped ASUS strix B550, including a quality integrated sound card, as 5.1 audio is important to me. What cheap board could I choose for the AM5 to match my existing AM4?

Exactly. I don't have a problem with FPS drops even on 5600, but PCs are my hobby and I don't need an upgrade, but I want :).

Likewise. My GB X470 Aorus G7 is my pride. Were I to replace it, my basic requirements would be having quality audio (with TOSLINK out), good Wi-Fi and a code display.

Yeah, that's a good question.
I know my board has done me well so far, though it wasn't exactly cheap, at least not at the time of purchase. Sadly I don't know enough about motherboards to help here, really for me I just looked for the cheapest that was ATX and clicked buy.
Audio appears to be good too. Likewise with Wifi.
(This machine is also the first time that I've opted to not buy a laptop, so have that in mind when reading what I said)

Honestly, after seeing how we got treated over the last few years, I am not in a rush to throw cash at these companies anymore.

If you feel the need to upgrade, do it.. if not, don't :)

I guess AMD didnt send anyone to test it so the usual reviewers are late to the party. This is the only decent review I've found and it actually compares it with 5600 too. I don't know which language is this but charts are pretty self explanatory.
Edit: It also uses 4070 too so you are in luck :D

Seems Polish. Luckily, numbers are in Numberish:

Limited gameset for benchmarking, but interesting numbers nevertheless. If I can get anything between these 11% to 27% extra on my 7900XTX compared to my 5600X (alright, deduce some 2 or 3% as the X has higher clocks), I'm sold.
Getting mine tomorrow.

I'm in the same position too with a Crosshair hero VII, R7 5600 X and RX 5700 XT.
Upgrading the CPU to AM5 obviously means new RAM and mobo which is frankly too expensive for me just now. Besides, I game less than before and the game I do have, run very well.
I'm tempted to go Nvidia for my next GPU due to AMD driver issues, but since I also render videos, I'm seriously tempted by the 5800 X3D. I also have another AM4, a Giga Aorus, so I think I'll stick with AM4 for the time being, mainly for $$$ reasons.

I can't play like I used to either. But when I do find some time to play, I want to have maximum pleasure and enjoy smooth gameplay above 60 FPS. That's why I upgraded 5 months ago from the 2060S to the RTX 4070. The 2060S was no longer enough for me, although it was still great.
I'll wait for the price to drop in a few weeks and go for the 5700X3D, now that it's released it's above MSRP. I also have a small youtube channel and render videos, so definitely more CPU power is welcome (although most one via NVEC).

I’d say just save some money and migrate to AM5 down the road and you’ll have an upgrade path open for a few years and a couple of upcoming CPU series.
Get yourself a good AM5 board with R5 7600nonX and some 6000 ram kit.
Boards are the spine of any system. Anything else can be replaced much easier.

The price of 5700x3d in my market is €270, r5 7600 €210.Thank you.
At that price i'd rather do the 7600. The 7600 with ram won't be much more expensive than the 5700x3d just by itself and the cost of selling your current combo (5600 with B550 and 32GB DDR4) on the used market should cover the cost of a B650 board. So basically when it's all said and done you (after selling old system and buying new combo) could be on AM5 with a good midrange chip and DDR5 ram for not much more money out of pocket than just buying the 5700X3d

Agreed. If the choice now is 5700x3d or AM5 I'd rather jump on AM5 now with like you said good spine/bones (ram/motherboard) and sell now while your AM4 system has good resale value.

Did you update your UEFI-BIOS to 3405 yet? According to Asus, this solves the "LogoFail" vulnerability. Not that long ago, I updated the ROG Strix B550-F Gaming (my other PC) to 3405.

@zatarcz As I already got my hands on a 5700X3D, I'll put here some benchmarks I have (in order: Borderlands 3 DX12, Deus Ex Mankind Divided DX11, F1 22, Grid 2, Hitman Absolution, Horizon Zero Dawn, Sleeping Dogs DE, Shadow of the Tomb Raider DX12, all at 1440p) to help you in making a decision:
BL3(DX12)-5600X.jpg

F122-5600X.jpg

HitmanAbsolution-5700X3D.jpg
HZD-5700X3D.jpg
SleepingDogsDE-5700X3D.jpg
SOTTR(DX12)-5700X3D.jpg

Simple conclusion: lost some highs, but all lows and averages got better. Shadow of the Tomb Raider, F1 22 and Horizon Zero Dawn benefitted the most. Also of notice: it runs hotter than the 5600X but not by much, at least not on the scenarios I ran.

IMPORTANT: PBO settings are nowhere to be seen with my 5700X3D. Heck, Ryzen Master and Radeon Software can't even monitor the CPU except for its usage %. I don't know if this is a limitation from my X470 while using its latest bios, but I'm somewhat bummed that both 5800X3D and 5600X3D are PBO-tunable and the 5700X3D doesn't appear to be.

Well depends on the resolution. If you're going to game at 1440p or 4k, keep the cpu, and put money on a faster gpu or not. If you game at 1080p, get a 5700x3d or 5600x3d to hold you over a few more years.

Wait for AM6. AM5 has been a bit underwhelming compared to AM4.

A 10% frequency deficit from the 5800X3D isn't good for someone who's upgrading from want not need.

I wouldn't bother unless you're going straight for the 5800X3D. Do that or wait for Zen 5/Intel 15th gen which will be a major redesign.

I very recently upgraded to 64GB DDR4 and a 5800X3D (from 5600non-X).
Concurrently, my long-time friend upgraded to a 7900X and B650 (from 5800X and B550).

The X3D is a big upgrade, yes. However, I've got a tinge of buyer's remorse*. Looking back, a B650 and a 8500G or 8600G + 24-32GB of the cheapest DDR5 I could scrounge up, would've been a better upgrade (for me) The 740M, 760M, and 780M inside the 8000Gs, would've been a great replacement for my Navi 24's features and utility. A 6-core Zen4 AM5 APU would've been a modest upgrade, while allowing me a longer-legged upgrade path, too.
(The lacking expansion demonstrated on AM5 boards, was also a major turn off vs. my X570 AM4 board.)

*I REALLY wanted an X3D 'for the collection', and it's personally a 'curio' to me. NtM since my younger days, I now prefer older better 'worked out' platforms. -very mixed feels.

Wait for AM6. AM5 has been a bit underwhelming compared to AM4.
AM5 “just” started… How can we judge the platform just by 1 CPU series.
Zen5 is coming most likely this year on AM5 and probably Zen6 will too by the end of 2025 or early 2026.

Good chance zen6 would also be on AM5 ~ I really don't expect DDR6 any time soon & AMD would be foolish to push users to a new platform just on the back of PCIe 6.0 this is assuming zen6 has one/both of the major tech upgrades we get around half a decade apart. Of course there's also the highly unlikely event that zen6 has neither & AMD still pushes it to AM6 just to screw with us :nutkick:

Maybe check on PBO2Tuner for now. Apparently not even manufacturers were expecting a new AM4 CPU in 2024 so they didn't ready a BIOS update. I checked on the website, there is a 5700X3D mentioned in support list but it says it is supported since a BIOS from 2021 (F60). I don't think even AMD knew there will be a 5700X3D back then

If PBO2Tuner works I advise a standard -30 CO all cores on it since 4.1Ghz is pretty low for those chips to begin with. There is a way to run it at startup so you don't need to do it manually every time.

Overall averages are solid. If you have time, maybe run a cinebench as well. With and without CO (if it works). Even better, with Hwinfo running at the background.
