WD, the world's leader in external storage solutions, today introduced its new one terabyte (TB) and 750 gigabyte (GB) capacity My Passport Essential SE Portable USB Drives. Available now at WD's online store, the new drives feature a titanium silver finish and put massive storage capacity in the palm of your hand.

Perfect for saving, storing and backing up all of the digital memories captured this summer, the new 1 TB and 750 GB capacity My Passport Essential SE drives are light and compact to carry and, because they are USB-powered, they do not need an external power adapter. Equipped with sync and encryption software (Windows-compatible only), this small drive, with mega-capacity, makes it easy to securely carry thousands of songs or videos or photos.

WD Sync software allows consumers to easily take desktop content with them by simplifying the synchronization of essential personal files and Microsoft Outlook data on a PC. Should owners misplace the drive, they know their data is protected with 128-bit encryption.

"The enormous capacity of these new My Passport Essential SE drives makes them the perfect travel-friendly storage device to hold all the rich media content generated by higher resolution photos and HD videos and music," said Dale Pistilli, vice president of marketing for WD's branded products group. "Carrying digital files close at hand continues to be a growing consumer interest and this new drive offers a sleek and stylish solution with plenty of storage capacity for people on the move."

A product specification sheet of My Passport Essential SE can be viewed here.

Price and Availability
WD's My Passport Essential SE portable drives are available now in the U.S. at select retail stores and from WD's online store. MSRP for the My Passport Essential SE 1 TB portable drive is $299.99 USD and for the 750 GB model is $199.99 USD.

If only it was esata and not slow old usb2.

Whats the write speed on it?

For anyone thinking of buying one of these and sticking it in your laptop, these 1TB and 750GB drives are thicker than your standard 2.5" drive, so they won't fit.

2.5inch is far from palm sized.... especially in a case. WD, Ill see you in court!

So this isnt the standard 2.5inch form factor?

No, look at the other news post from today about the WD 1TB 2.5" drives. They went thicker than the standard 9.5mm height to a 12.5mm height.

i remember the time my HDD capacity was 200MB :) . Seems like yesterday ...

My laptop accepts the 12.5mm drives... Why doesn't yours? lolz.

Looks like they have made the hard drives thicker to thoroughly expand the capacities, and it wont be hard for new laptops to accept that form facter. This is a good idea!

Well I've been through a few Dells (newer and older) and a couple of HP's, and none of them support it. Lucky you!

The 12.5mm standard isn't anything new. I have an old iBook which can only accept the more standard 9.5mm drives, but there were plenty of 12.5mm ones at the time.
I believe Samsung went to 12.5mm on their first 2.5" 500GB drive, it had more platters than the norm for 9.5mm drives, but it was beaten about a month later by a 9.5mm 500GB drive.
So if the same is true here, expect a 9.5mm 1TB laptop drive in a little over a month :D
I've been wanting a 500GB for my laptop, and they're cheap now, so once the 1TB ones come out, I might jump on it, they'll be even cheaper by then.

Meecrob, stop your belly-aching, that's all anyone ever whines about when it comes to storage, it's like listening to a broken record, either fix it, or do nothing like the rest of us.
