Ohhh so the board was shorting itself out. Well at least you found the problem and didn't kill any parts in the process.
No, not my original board, the one I got as a testing replacement as it was cheap. It was listed as working but missing lanes but the pictures they posted didn't show the damage so there was n o way to tell until it was in my hands. I did some final checking before going ahead to install it and that's when I found the ripped traces so I didn't even bother in the end as i'm not risking my GPU in that condition, maybe if it was only a few lifted pins i'd have tried it but not fully lifted traces.
I've now installed the new PSU anyway and so far all is well but only time will tell really as now i'll be able to turn my PC off on a night to see if that issue comes back again after the systems been off overnight or not. If it doesn't then problem solved, otherwise i'll have to move on to the motherboard as that'll be the only other thing it could be then I think really. I'm still within the return period for the PSU anyway so I can always return that and add the cash from that to a new motherboard if that's the case.

First day with the new PSU installed, booted fine with no issues today, few more days of that and i'll mark this as resolved.
