I just completed the base game and story DLC of The Callisto Protocol. The Final Transmission DLC extends the story arc of the main character and reveals how the game really ends.

I must say, despite some Steam reviews claiming this game has an uninteresting story, I thought it was pretty well written and suitably as horrific and desperate as you'd want a survival horror game to be.

There was also a bit of cognitive dissonance revealed at the end and a really sad ending in the DLC that wrapped things up well. It's one of those games that puts you in a mood after playing it that makes you really feel for the protagonist.

Gameplay wise, the arsenal, is rather minimalist, especially if you limit yourself to the 3 most effective weapons. You also have more inventory space that way, since there's less ammo types to carry. I actually prefer this in Survival Horror games for two reasons, they are limited resource type games anyway, and it feels more realistic than being able to carry an armory on your back like in Doom.

Combat loop wise it's fairly minimalist as well, requiring careful balancing of melee, guns, and GRP Glove. Some have claimed it gets repetitious, but I feel they varied the types of enemies and environs just enough to keep things from being predictable. Just the fact that you often don't know when an enemy's combo is going to end, or when another will join in the fight, keeps you on your toes.

They also save some of the best potential projectiles to toss with the GRP Glove for later in the game. I also prefer how the use of the GRP Glove looks, sounds, and feels compared to Kinesis in Dead Space. The inventory space is also more minimalist, as you don't change suits as often as in Dead Space. This means you have to carefully weigh your decision of how much health, ammo, and GRP batteries you carry.

Even the monetary system is more minimalist than Dead Space, where money you get for selling rare parts you find is not nearly enough to fully upgrade 3 guns, the baton, and the GRP. In fact I often times had to buy ammo vs an upgrade. It works out well as long as you don't overuse any part of the basic combat elements, which can leave you low on health, ammo, or batteries. In fact I'd say the game is well balanced.

Some have said as well that the combat, especially the melee, feels clumsy. It can, but mainly if you try to overuse melee, as when Jacob gets tired, it shows, as it SHOULD in a survival horror type game. There are also times when the reticule to shoot a worn down enemy appears when you're VERY close to an enemy that is sprouting, which is more likely to happen if you don't balance melee with dodge.

Tentacles sprouting on an enemy while in combat can be good, or bad. With a balanced attack, Jacob will less likely stumble toward the enemy, allowing him space and time to not just blindly shoot at the reticule prompt, but instead at the tentacles. The latter is preferred, because it can down them in one shot. That means less ammo used, and less likely another will gang up on you, leaving two to fight simultaneously.

If you get caught out stumbling tired though, chances are at some point, an enemy's sprouts are going to fester, and they'll transform into something MUCH harder to deal with. A lot of people I find don't pay attention to or appreciate small details like this in a game. It can mean the difference between a well fought fight, and feeling like the game is "too clumsy" in it's combat as some claim in negatively biased reviews.

I am trying a little Half-Life: Alyx NoVR mod, it works but kinda sad that I cannot use both hands in-game in the mod and there is clip mode because it's possible to get stuck.

Did you use a gamepad playing it maybe, because on keyboard it's very hard to be accurate enough to get max score on all of them in JC3?
Did not. Only keyboard and mouse... It was not so hard actually, you can cheat some challenges by using choppers instead of RPG's and so on. Had no problems to get 5 stars at every challenge, was repeating few 10 times btw :D But it's fine.

I've just been replaying Valkyria Chronicles 4 and Tales of Berseria just because I don't know what else to play. I was interested in Granblue Fantasy which is coming out in a couple days... but I heard it doesn't have much for a story which is disappointing. But I'll check out the reviews when it releases.

Tekken8: great game! Story is still messed up and ridiculous, but it always has been in Tekken, so whatever. Everything else is amazing. And it has crossplay on launch so I can play finally play a fresh fighting game with my console friends - take notes, NRS/WB.

Word of caution, make sure you have a gamepad with a good dpad as the game doesn't support sticks..

I could use my old (2003) M$ Sidewinder controller for this...

Good progress in Ixion. I totally neglected the upgrades for all the different buildings until yesterday and then I figured out how huge some of them are. Sector 3 can now scale up to housing over 4000 individuals instead and all housing now produces super valuable Waste :) Recycling is big in this game. Its a life saver! Waste can become water. Waste can become Alloys, Polymers or Electronics. Waste can become food.

But now stuff is shooting at me and I am sorely lacking fire stations. Panic!

@Ahhzz If the regular difficulty is too much (which it really kinda is, for a first playthrough...), you can start custom mode and tweak every little part of it to your liking. I'd give it another spin, its a lovely game. I did the first chapter with adapted difficulty to learn the systems, and then started over on normal.
When a Game gets you. Nice.

I decided to jump back into Space Bourne 2 for a while.
That Game is so under the radar.

Yep looks like if you thought 2023 was good 2024 will be a nostalgia injected festival of "I think I need to take a couple personal days next Week after release. The only one I am not interested in is Monster Hunter but that is because I have never played it. Of course that would be replaced with Homeworld 3.

Yeah I'd say the HDR is one small area graphically where Dead Space Remake stands out a bit more, but The Casllisto Protocol at the time it released had every other game beat on sheer texture detail. It's kind of a shame that the condition it launched in caused a LOT of layoffs and a rift big enough to make Glen Schofield leave Striking Distance, but the new CEO Steve Papoutsis, whom IMO did a great job as lead of Visceral Games with Dead Space, should be a fine fit.

I hope they continue The Callisto Protocol with at least a couple more games, because I was getting into the story a lot when they said the people behind the protocol had been trying to evolve the human race for over a 1000 years. Some of what was said, like making humans more adaptable to space and harsh extra terrestrial environments reminded me of some good sci fi stuff I've seen and even Humanity 2.0 episodes.

The space combat is better than Star Fields.. I had to turn the auto roll off, and change it to my axis on the mouse.. Makes the flight sim part much better. IMO.

Well, first game and its DLC didnt last long once I decided to give up on cautious play and just send it  Action and parkour flow was really well balanced and I enjoyed it a lot till the end. Story was okeyish, DLC adds it some more. Let's see how it continues on second game.
Just finished Ghostrunner 2. Overall, it was still enjoyable. Definitely more complete game than first one. However I didnt really like every addition they made to it. First game had very fluid parkour and action parts, one after another, and whole run almost never breaks if you just send it and play. Story was progressing while you are running and there were almost no cutscenes or strict breaks. There were no important side tracks or crossroads. Because of this I actually felt like a 'runner' whole game. This would be normally pretty tiresome but the game was very short so you never get a chance to get tired

Second game on the other hand is too long for its own good. Only the last 1/3 part was on par with the fluidity on first game. I actually got bored a little until that point. They put so many distractions in the game as upgrades, challenges, collectibles (first game had this too but they were very well hidden so you'd just miss them) and a freaking HUB. I hated the HUB. It was so unnecessary and broke the fast action of the game for no good reason. You are supposed speak with characters in there but it could easily be done on radio like in the first game while you are running to next mission. And half of the characters were useless and didn't really add anything to game anyway. They tried so hard to sell the story and characters this time. They also speak too much on radio and I missed many conversation because of all the action going around while they are speaking to me. Then there are some parts where you have to just wait and listen/watch some scenes... So gameplay-wise I think it was behind the first game. They had found a good balance between story, action and parkour in the first game but they lost it here. But otherwise, it is mechanically a better game, a full game. Shame since it could easily be much better.

Also UE stutters can go to hell. :shadedshu:
