What do you do for a living?

So sorry to hear about that. You have my sympathies.
Thanks, I appreciate the thought. She meant the world to me.

I want to retire early too but ill work until i know i have enough for savings and ill continue a 2 day part time...
i don't want to be old and cant afford a visit to the doctors... or buying meds
I'm glad we've got at least this right here in Europe. I mean, the state of medical service is abysmal, but at least it's free. It's better to wonder whether you'll survive until your appointment, rather than whether you can afford it or not, right? :ohwell:

I completely agree. I'm saving up for an early finish myself.

My mum has just recently passed way before thinking about retiring at 58. I wanna be sipping beer full time with the meaning of the word "job" long forgotten when I'm that age.
I'm sorry to learn of your mom's untimely demise; 58 is too young. I lost my father last year so I understand the pain.

Made a shift after having enough of my boss' bs at my last job (wanted to play tech instead of running the business).

I'm doing contract end-user support (endpoints all the way to the switch) at the production plant of a major healthcare/nutrition corporation. It was an upgrade in pay and I'll use it to move further north in state after a couple years (already moved halfway to where I want to end up).

I'm currently a "data engineer" working remotely for an startup in the US. I write that in between quotes because, since it's an startup, I end up doing tons of different stuff, from more DevOps like stuff to backend.
I'm also about to finish my masters in the next couple months (focusing in some nice machine learning stuff), and will likely continue with a phd after that since that's the only way for me to "force" myself to keep working in a project I have, mostly as a hobby.

I actually started working as a networking trainee, but then moved into embedded systems, and finally decided that data would pay me better and allow me to work remotely.

@Cvrk what are you doing for job/career now?

In the past I've done IT support, car mechanic, underground utility sales, and currently I work for HobbyTown and it's probably the best job I've ever had! As a kid I always wanted to get into RC cars and planes and boats but just didn't have the funds. Well, now I have it all, I get other people excited about it daily, and get to see the newest industry stuff and cool builds every day!

Thanks. It's a pain that cannot be expressed with words. I hope you've managed to find some solace.

I used to shop there in the '90s for Advanced Dungeons and Dragons books. Now you can find that stuff anywhere.

Public Passenger/School Bus driver, up to 51 weeks a year......

Time helps, but every now and then, something reminds me of him with an intensity that stops me in my tracks. Talking to my sister and mother helps too.

I find my situation exactly the same. Keeping busy helps too, but she's always there, hidden within my thoughts. I can't focus with 100% intensity on anything. I keep dreaming of her, too.

To stay on topic, I'm glad that my boss and my team are so lenient and helpful with me during this time. This is far more important to me than the job I'm actually doing.

50, Trader, i make money watching stuff go up and down on a screen.

I so wish I had the talent and nerves to do that! :(

it's not easy, it's not for everyone, something like 90%+ of those who try fail, but if you persist and want it badly enough, the barrier for entry is low, you can try at it in your spare time. But i warn you, for most people (me included) it takes years until you can be successful at it

I'd love to do that, but I'm too risk-averse. :( I much prefer a stable salary every month, even if I have to literally waste my time getting it.

If I ever did any trading, I'd just buy into the S&P 500 and call it a day.

I am a freelance IT security consultant. Or was. I am currently under paid retainer for a legal firm. I basically do their network infrastructure and security as the head IT honcho. Needs to be done right of course because we deal with a lot of privileged records.

Some days I do almost nothing and totally work from home. Other days... are intetesting lol. But if something goes wrong its my fault so I do my best to never let it be too bad.

I'm not joking, you can set up a demo acc and try in some spare time, there is literally nothing to lose... but your pride lmao.
Not sure how much you know about it, but as long as you keep away from options or shorting stocks (that's not what i do), risk is always controlled even if you use your money, the most you can lose is what you invest.
Don't put it aside until you give it a shot.

I've got a savings account on Trading 212 which offers a demo mode for investing, so I might just do that. :)

I am B2B Technical Convergence Specialist @ Orange

it's bad. I answer to emails and ping a router all day long. and if it gets really fun, I ping multiple routers. :(

Finished in November a 6 month business analyst course. And, maybe...maybe in January I will start a data MySQL course. Because BA without data gathering is not much.
I gave up on the idea of working from home. It's bad for networking, for mental health etc. I am a go-to office type of guy.

Maybe one day I will be able to land a Junior BA job and work my way from here.

I agree. Work and home don't mix well. I tend to say, once I've clocked out, I'm out. My shift is 8 hours, not a second longer.

Just an old wrench.
Have certs in Medium and Heavy Duty, Electrical and After-treatment systems.
Work on a fleet of about 120 trucks and tractors all of them Freightliner M2, Cascadia, Columbia class 8 tractors.
Am shop Lead technician.
So I do all the programming and difficult diagnostics.
Repair the dealers warranty work because I get to look that over and repair their mistakes before letting the truck go back on the road.
I also do a fair share of welding and fabricating.

Have 2x Triple bay tool boxes full of tooling. Buying tooling never seems to end...

Oh man, when I was wrenching and a hydraulic tech, it never ended!!!!!

A lot of people don't realize how much money gets tied up in tools.

As you said, it never ends.

One of the impossible things trying to explain to my wife 20+ years.

The prices are crazy these days, bought my first box for 5000$. Want the same box today, 12,000 dollars.

My stuff is insured at 100,000 dollars, I'm not even sure if that's enough to cover everything these days!
