I would say the vast majority of users don't know who built their power supply, cases, AIO cooler, fans, etc., etc., (including most on this site) but the few people on TPU who I follow know their PSU oem and are familiar with the more popular ones. That said, Deer is mostly a brand who outsource PSU as is Daiboltek. Linkworld is an OEM with a facility in Suzhou.

Also, The Seasonic S12II was released at a time when virtually all after market consumer PSU were group regualted so you can't fault them for that. You can fault them for lack of OTP, poor OCP, and swapping out the fan to a cheaper version during the production run. The S12III was never built by Seasonic but rather outsourced to an OEM that Superflower uses as well at times.
I highlighted deer due to their funny proprietary PWM combo ICs found in their power supplies, other than that it is spot on. I often encounter these bottom of the barrel OEMs in ultra cheap power supplies+cases here in the south east.

Yes, It is a fact that the S12III is an outsourced power supply made by Shenzhen RSY, and many reviews highlight that Superflower uses RSY factories as Superflower's production lines for their PSUs are comparatively small and cannot fulfill the demand.

The main gripe I had with the S12II is how often it was recommended after its time, and if I had to argue triple coil individual regulation was already widespread during the time of the S12II (Seasonic did it at the earlier M12 700W SS700HM ) even, and its protections were lacking. But I can give it a pass for being a reliable choice at the time, although PSU loads were massively shifting to 12V at that point in time thanks to the Nvidia's G80 and its successors.

I wish top tier OEMs like Chicony/Etasis were still selling consumer ATX psus, I wouldn't hesitate to buy those. Delta is back with some XPG units, but I wish they can make PSUs as good as what they did with Antec HCP back then. Delta's digital psu platform used in XPG's flagship PSU is still unrefined compared to the AX1600i.

Yeah I had similar issues with that as well but it was sold under a lot of other brands so people knew it and constantly recommended even when Seasonic themselves moved on from it (yet they continued
to make it due to the high demand)

Chicony is still used by some brands like Corsair and Delta is just huge. They make PSU for mass produced PC's, servers, laptops, and occasionally other brands like Antec. Also, Corsair is more hands on with PSU OEMs than ADATA. I would still put Delta up there with other OEMs like flextronics in terms of reliability and quality.

I remember jonnyguru "Tiering" PSU manufacturers based on how vertically integrated they are. "Tier 1" manufacturers would be the like of Delta, Flextronics, and the like that has very high level of vertical integration and can produce in-house magnetics and the like coupled with large production capabilities. "Tier 2" Manufacturers such as Seasonic and Superflower that have good design teams but they have to outsource their parts and their supply chain is very market dependent. Their production lines are way smaller compared to tier 1 manufacturers too.

I wish delta marketed their consumer psus more such as the their DPS series (modular/non-modular) because they sell quite well in China/Korea. And hopefully Chicony is approached by another mainstream brand as the last mainstream PSU OEM'd by chicony was the yellow label Corsair RM7/850.

lack of SMT lines means they outsource it, it does not necessarily impact reliability or quality just not as integrated or large as someone like CWT

It does not directly impact it, but possible variations in production quality can be evident on a case by case basis. But you are correct about that.

pros and cons but obviously can be more expensive and an extra step in quality control.

It's as simple as buying a unit B tier or better from the tier list, that has enough wattage for your use case.

Or one that's had a good review from TPU.

Never skimp on PSU. You're not actually saving money by doing so, because a good one will last for ten years and save on electricity and cooling, but a bad one will burn down your house.

I've not payed attention to that tier list in years but it was flawed last I looked at it. That said obviously the TPU reviews are a great place to start.
